FROM A MEMORY A LONG TIME AGO...
The only thing that could be heard was the crashing of the waves against solid rocks. A full moon along with tiny twinkles of the stars filled the sky and shone down upon the sandy shore. A mysterious figure draped with a dark black coat stood near the shoreline, along with a small girl by his side. The figure, his hands in his coat's pockets, said in a soothing yet oddly malovent voice to the little girl, "Don't you want to be strong?"
The little girl, staring off into the dark sea, did not respond. Instead, she brought her two hands to her chest, awfully scared by this man in black.
The black coated-man pressed on. "Don't you always feel weak when HE always has to protect you?"
At this remark, the little girl turned her face to the man, a little curious of what he said.
Knowing that he had got the naiive girl's attention he continued on: "Don't you want to be able to protect HIM, too?"
Finally, the little girl said in almost a whisper, "...Yes."
Grinning inside his hood, he then extended his strong right arm and opened out his palm, as if to beckon to her. "Then...come with me."
The girl, afraid of what would happen if she took his hand, took a step backward, scared of what would happen to her.
"Don't be afraid," said the figure in a soothing voice. "I won't hurt you."
Instantly believing this man's remark the girl took a few steps foward, her little feet making small imprints in the moonlit sand. Just as she was about to take his hand, she hears a voice from another small child from far off, yelling: "Don't take his hand!!!"
The girl's head turned to her left, from which the voice had come from. A small shadow about her age was coming closer and closer to her and the man.
This time, the man's voice turned into a twisted sensation: "Take my hand! Quickly!" hissed the voice and shook his right arm for her to notice it once again.
The girl turned her gaze back upon the hooded man, this time, relucant since the voice said not to take it. "I...don't know," was all she managed to say.
The shadow soon became big a person that owned that shadow was running for the little girl, as if to save her. The little boy yelled once more, "Don't take his hand!!!"
The man, no completely annoyed turned toward the boy and swung his arm in a horizontal arc. From his swing, a black aura shot out from the swing and zoomed right into the boy's stomach. The little boy was flung into the sand, badly hurt by the attack the black-coated person had inflicted.
"Ugh," said the boy in a shaky voice. He still hadn't recovered from the damage.
A gust of wind flew by the shore and the man's hood flew off. The girl gasped at the man's amazing beauty, even though he was much older than she; he truly was a deciever.
Once again, the man (though we cannot see his face in the memory) took his hand out, once again saying: "Now look at the poor boy. Don't you want to be strong and be able to help him?"
The girl, horrified by the man's action, was shaking and was too scared to even utter a word.
The boy's shaky voice piped up, "D-Don't fall into his trap..."
"Come with me and I can make you even stronger than him..." the handsome man extended his right palm out again, beckoning her and her gullible self to come with him.
She looked at the little boy, struggling to try and get up and resume his running pace to reach her. She felt helpless and useless; she felt as if she couldn't do anything to save the boy. The timid girl turned to the man, her expression firm; as if she had made her decision and it was final. She said, "...Okay." and took his hand.

One large speed bump shook the whole moving truck, sending cardboard boxes flying and scatter everywhere. The loud bump woke Rina with a start and she stopped a gigantic box from crushing her in the nick of time! It was pitch dark inside the back of the moving truck; only one naked light bulb high up on the truck's ceiling was the only faint glow of light she and the evil boxes got. Yawning, Rina stretched her arms and legs out with the small remaining space her mother had allowed her to have. 'What an awful dream,' Rina said to herself. 'I wonder where my imagination got THAT from...' She pushed aside the mysterious dream for now. 'Whatever...I wonder what my new house will look like?' Rina's mind wandered off into different areas; she imagined her house looking like a tree-house, since she was going to live in tropical terrain (she didn't like the idea of a tree-house!). Just as she was about to think of something more eccentric, the truck screeched to a halt, making the boxes move and shake once again. Rina could hear the truck-driver getting out of the driver's seat and slamming the door harshly. She then heard faint footsteps and before she knew it, the large door to the back of the moving truck was swung wide open. Moving enough boxes so that Rina could get out, the grumpy mover bluntly said, “Get out.”
A little annoyed by the man’s bluntness, she huffily slid herself to the edge of the truck’s back and hopped off; not even thanking him for the ride (it was cramped anyway). As soon as she’d hopped off the truck, a whiff of fresh air entered her body and the smell of tropical fruit and the sun’s rays were all Rina needed to make her feel better. Just when Rina was happily content, her mother came bounding out of the passenger seat of the moving truck and yelled at the top of her lungs, “Rina, dear! Why don’t you check out our new home!?”
Sighing, Rina slowly turned around to face her too-energetic mother. “Sure,” was all Rina said blankly. She followed her mother to their new house; it was just the two of them, since her father was always on business trips. As soon as Rina’s mother and herself stepped foot on their new property, Rina was already amazed by the front garden. Beautiful colored rose bushels, petunias, lilies, daises, and tulips filled the front garden, giving it a nice and homey feeling. By the sight of the garden, her mother was already beaming and jumping up and down with excitement. (Rina sometimes felt like SHE was the adult and her mother the child.) When Rina’s mom un-locked the front door, the two were both amazed at the huge space they’d have to put their furniture and other appliances. A huge living room was the first thing they saw when they entered. It was already set with one couch, two lounge chairs, a plasma TV, and a built-in gas fire-place under the TV; courtesy of the home agency. Two staircases both led up to the second floor, which was where the bedrooms and bathrooms were. The kitchen was a cold-tiled floor with many appliances already out and ready to use. A small island marble counter was in the middle of the kitchen, two stools on opposite sides of the kitchen. Rina could already tell that she and her mother would feel at home in no time.
Rina’s mother was taking all this in all too quickly, and soon she became overwhelmed by all the bigness of her house. And once Rina’s mom got overwhelmed, people would best be advised to avoid her. Before her mother sent Rina to do something for her, Rina piped up and asked, “Uh, mom? Do you think I could explore the neighborhood and all? Maybe I can find some people that are going to the school I’m going to.”
“That’s a great idea, Rina! Why don’t you run along; I’ll get the movers un-packing.” Her mom was already busy inspecting the cleanliness of the kitchen by smearing her finger over the marble counter to check for dust. Rina bolted out of the kitchen and out the front door and into the nice warm tropical environment. Destiny Islands really was a great place to live.

There were rows after rows of houses everywhere Rina turned. Even though they were evenly spaced, she still was amazed by how many houses could fit on such a small island. No one seemed to be outside, so Rina had the whole road to herself. ‘I guess nobody my age lives here,’ Rina thought to herself, a glum expression clearly written all over her face. ‘Bummer…’ Just as she was about to turn back to her house, she overheard a little laughter coming from just down the road. Curious by the laughter, Rina walked over to the end of the road, which turned into a beach, full of yellow sand and sparkling sea-water. Over near the shore, she saw four people running back and forth from across the beach. Two were girls and the other two were boys. Even a bit more curious, Rina went over to them to see if they were her age. …They definitely were. One of the girls had brown hair that was curled at the end. She wore what looked to be a school uniform. A white polo and a blue and black plaid skirt along with a light blue tie to match. Her eyes were a stunning shade of dark blue. The other girl had dark red hair and bright blue eyes. Her pale skin shone with the sunset and her pink dress with millions of pockets and zippers made her skin and eyes even more distinctive. Another boy had spiky brown hair and a very unusual attire; black poofy pants with huge yellow pockets strapped to both of his sides. And lots of white fabric was criss-crossed across his pants, also. His jacket was black, also, and under his jack he wore a dark blue shirt. His glovelets were black with the same white fabric criss-crossed around his hands. His eyes were blue, too, and around his neck he wore a silver-chain with a silver crown-shaped pendant hanging from the chain.

…And then there was the other boy. When Rina first saw him, her heart had immediately skipped a beat. She wasn’t sure why, but she felt an odd sensation of embarrassment and affection surge through her body all at once. She didn’t know what made that happen; was it his shining silver hair that shone in the sunset? Was it his sea-colored eyes of shades of teal and aquamarine? Was it his white and light yellow vest that brought out his muscular build? Was it his long light blue jeans? Or was it just…all of the above?
“U-Um…hello,” Rina stammered, awfully disappointed in herself, because that was all she managed to sputter out instead of something cool, like these kids were.
The girl with curly tips at the ends of her brown hair spoke first, “Uh, hi. Who are you?” Her voice was high-pitched and cheerful, but Rina could hear a little tinge of edginess in her voice, as if Rina were interrupting something.
“I’m…Rina.”
The spiky-haired boy spoke this time, “Rina? Are you new around here?”
“Um, yeah.”
“So where do you live?” asked the dark-red haired girl. She gave a sweet and welcoming smile to make Rina feel more at ease.
“I live over on Sun Set Street. My family was un-packing all the stuff, so I just decided to look around.” replied Rina. She turned red with embarrassment and shame; she was making a fool of herself in front of these kids!
“Sun Street?” the brown haired girl seemed a bit shocked. She turned to look at the silver-haired boy that made Rina’s heart beat fast. “Isn’t that the street that you live on, Riku?”
The boy named Riku calmly and coolly said, “Yeah.” He was staring at Rina the whole time since she first came into view of their game. Rina didn’t even want to make eye-contact; she felt she wasn’t even worthy of looking at his stunning handsomeness.
‘He doesn’t sound too happy about that,’ thought Rina to herself.
“So, uh…are you going to Destiny Island’s Public School?” the spiky-haired boy asked.
Rina looked up at the boy, who had a nice and warm welcoming smile plastered on his light tanned face. “Uh-Huh. Are all of you going there?”
Everyone nodded. Everyone, except Riku.
Rina quickly stole a glance at Riku. Once her eyes met his sea-colored eyes, her dark brown eyes immediately darted away from view. She turned her gaze to the red-haired girl. “So…what are you names? If you don’t mind my asking…” She was a bit embarrassed to ask their names.
“I’m Selphie,” said the curly brown-haired girl with a blank expression on her face.
“I’m Kairi,” the red-haired girl said with a sweet smile.
“Sora…” said the brown-haired boy with a bit of a bored tone in his voice, as if saying his name over and over again was a pain.
“Riku.” It seemed as if this boy only spoke one word per sentence.
“Well, uh. Nice to meet you four.” She looked at each of them, looking at Riku for only a second. She turned to go back to her house, and to cover her face with her bedroom’s pillow.
Just as soon as she was about to dart and run, the girl named Kairi stopped her from running away. “Hey, um, Rina,” Kairi started out slowly.
Rina turned to look at Kairi. “Yes?”
Kairi’s sweet smile turned into a confused and curious look; her eyebrows a little more up on her forehead and her eyes narrowed slightly. “Have I…met you before?”
“M-Me?” Rina struggled with the word. “U-Um…n-no, I don’t think so.”
Kairi seemed a bit disappointed in the guess she’d made to herself. “Oh, I see…”
“B-Bye!” Completely embarrassed by Kairi’s question, Rina sprinted the whole way home.

Rina was in her bedroom, which was quite smaller than the one that she’d had in her old house. She was looking out her window, gazing at the sunset that was streaked with light pink and dark orange clouds. ‘I made a total idiot of myself,’ Rina said to herself. ‘Now Kairi and the others probably think I’m some kind of weirdo from outer space…’ Heaving a deep sigh, she hung her head low in disappointment. ‘That silver-haired boy must’ve stopped me from being my normal self…’ Rina recalled what the boy looked like; making her heart beat faster. ‘Just THINKING of him makes me embarrassed!’ She blushed at the thought of the boy named Riku. ‘Riku…so that’s his name.’
Just then, she heard a small jingling noise coming from outside. She hopped off her bed and stood near her window. Once she saw where the noise was coming from, she cupped her mouth and her eyes with widened with shock. Riku was fiddling with some keys to try and get into his house…which was right across from her new home! Rina’s heart beat even faster this time, her blood pressure increasing and her face turning a little bit red from embarrassment of just staring at him. “H-He lives right across from me!?” Rina gasped aloud. Entranced by Riku’s actions, she stared at him from high above, watching his every single move.
Riku have finished opening his front door and went inside. Just as he was about to close the door, he looked up and caught Rina’s gaze at him and his eyes widened with surprise.
‘O-Oh, no-!’ Rina yelled to herself. ‘He saw me spying on him!!!’ Terribly embarrassed with herself, Rina ran from her window and out of her room, and downstairs to a place where Riku couldn’t see her.
