She had been feeling the heavy guilt since day one when she realized she had been pregnant. She was unable to forgive herself, despite Delano telling her he forgave her, and now she realized she wasn't worthy to be his mate, nor was it right for her to stay with him when she constantly had her children around as a painful reminder to Delano of her sinful deeds. Aruna's thoughts also continued to whirl around with a particular stallion who was the father of those particular children, and she had thought, and thought, and thought. She had to be honest with herself first, before she was forced to be honest with her mate. No, she corrected herself, Delano wasn't her mate. At least, he wouldn't be for long. She sighed heavily, realizing that, to Delano, this would make him look like she was merely using him. She really hated herself at this point. She felt a sadness settle deeply within her heart as she realized that if she didn't do this now, she would never be happy--truly happy, and she wanted the same for Delano. He deserved more than a wicked, sinful mare like her.

Delano sighed softly as he looked over the meadow that was their home...or once had been. They had not been there since the birth of the foals, and finding Chikotae who they raised as their own...they were all now grown and ventured out into the world on their own. But something still didn't feel right. He had forgiven Aruna for her misdeeds that one fateful night, but still she had not been the same towards him ever since.
Oh it was true she had her affectionate moments, but he often wondered if she was happy and if this was what she truly wanted. He shuddered as the thought of losing her once more surfaced and presented itself to him. Oh how he hated Rahu...this was all his fault, his doing. But dwelling on it would not fix the problem, nor would his hatred of the dark stallion.
The wind blew softly, whipping his mane. He flicked his lion like tail, deep in his thoughts as they swirled about inside his head. He was unaware that his mate was on her way to break some very bad news to him.

She wasn't sure which was worse--the news she would soon break to her mate, or if she was being a heartless *****. It pained her; to have to do this to the one who had saved her so many times, the one who had cheered her up, who had supported her, and even had forgiven her for all her sins and misdeeds... because of this, she had come to the conclusion she just... wasn't worthy, or pure, enough for him. For Delano. Golden eyes once sharp, clear, and confident were now dulled with pain, insecurity, and lifelessness. The golden brown mare turned her gaze to what would soon be her former home. She had come here, away from her other family, in order to be with Delano. She struggled with herself a moment as she thought about that decision... where had her love and affection, her passion... where did it go? That love for Delano...? Aruna shook her head, appalled she was having doubts when she realized and suddenly understood why she was having these thoughts: guilt. Pure guilt. She really didn't deserved someone as wonderful as Delano... he was a stallion of honor... and she... she, Aruna, had lost sight of her honor, her purity... She took a deep breath. She needed to get this over with. It would hurt them both... but she knew that, eventually, they would move on. She hoped. She wasn't good at "moving on"... she was such... a hypocrite.

Delano was still lost in his thoughts as his mate drew closer to his location. A shiver ran down his spine and he looked skywards. Dark clouds were now filling the skies, promising a storm to come and chasing away the summer heat. The blood red stallion sighed and dropped his gaze to his feet. Something didn't feel right. He returned his gaze to the skies, watching as the storm slowly blew in.
It was that moment when Aruna's scent came to him. She was close. And somehow he didn't think she had good news for him.

She had the feeling that Delano knew by instinct what was sure to happen, and she herself wasn't all that happy with her decision. However, as she had previously thought before, and felt right now, she had to let him go... and he had to let her go, but she felt the horror of asking, of doing, of even thinking of what she was about to do. His scent wafted towards her as she approached him, and she dearly wanted to cling onto what she had of him left, but she knew that if she couldn't let go... neither could he, and well, things were just that way. "Lano...?" she whispered cautiously, wishing she hadn't really speculated on this subject, wishing she didn't feel the constant guilt, wishing she wasn't about to do what she was about to do. She bit her bottom lip for a moment, unsure how to go about talking about this topic... should she start off with the events? Should she just maintain some light-hearted, safe topics to talk about before she launched into the main reason she was acting like this? Aruna felt like a complete and total monster, to do this to someone who she loved as dearly as he loved her, but she found that if she had to really choose, she had to choose with her heart, and her heart pounded for someone else... she had been in such a long denial she had always felt from before that it was for Delano, her beloved knight. She was crying inside, knowing she was a monster to do what she was about to do...

He could hear her approaching now. Taking in her scent he closed his eyes, and sighed softly to himself, somehow dreading the moments to come but he knew not why he did so. He waited until she spoke, and upon hearing her melodic voice speak his nick name in which only she called him, he turned his head to look at her.
Turning himself around to face her, he prepared himself for whatever it was she had to tell him. The wind now whipped his inky black mane behind him and he flicked his tail ever so lightly. She looked so upset and almost as if she did not want to speak to him about whatever was bothering her. "Yes Aruna? I was just lost in my thoughts. Was there something you needed?"
He tried to give her a weak smile but he failed miserably. He knew he was no more happy then she at this particular moment and whatever was going on, waging a war inside her, no good would come of it for him or for her. He wanted to be close to her and reassure her as well as himself everything was ok but he fought the urge.

The way he looked right now, it took her breath away. He looked exactly as he had when he came to rescue her that night so long ago. Seeing him right now, with how he looked right now, forced her to fight back tears. She really didn't want to do this--she didn't want him feeling what she had felt so long ago and still felt the throbbing ache of it--but she knew that with how she was, it wasn't fair to him. In all reality, in was never fair to him.
"I..." she began, and then fell silent. Where was her courage? Aruna bit her lip gently, trying to understand why her bluntness suddenly failed her, and why her bravery suddenly fled. She trembled and quivered, unable to adjust and adapt. "I... no. L-Lano, I've b-been thinking... thinking for a long, long time, and..." Goddess Epona, she was stuttering! Falling silent once again to gather herself back into her usual confidence, she took slow, even breaths.
This was going to be so hard... after all, she really did still love Delano, just not in the same respect as she originally thought, or in the way he loved her, or in the way she loved... him. She couldn't even begin to think of his name, for fear it would spill from her lips and ruin what she could say; wanted to say. His smile broke the last shreds of her own pain, and all she could do was shake her head, tears brimming at the edge of her eyes.
"Delano," she began, for the first time, in a long time, addressing him by his full name, "I... we have to talk. I mean, we're talking now, but... this... what I've been thinking, it's very... delicate and a very serious topic. I want you to prepare yourself." She ended with nearly a murmur barely loud enough for him to hear, but she spoke loud enough that he did. Her heart ached, but it ached for the pain that Delano would soon come to know, a pain she would never wish for on any other creature, but it was soon to come.

His crimson eyes fells upon the mare as she stuttered...as if what she had to say did not want to come out. She was still as beautiful as she had always been to him and even now still took his breath away. But something did not feel right. He watched as she paused, biting her lip.
He found he had begun to fidget, his front hooves alternating as he pawed at the ground. He could see her body tremble as if fear had taken her over, and hear the shaking in her voice before she fell silent once more.
"Whatever it is, you can tell me. I can only assume by your behaviour, that whatever it is, I'm not going to like it. I cannot promise not to get upset, but I can promise you that calm patience I have always given you." He hoped his words would be reassuring, for her at least. They were of no comfort to him.
Once more as she broke into tears, he wanted to be close to her as he always had in the past. But something was still telling him that this would not be a good idea this time. And finally..she spoke once more.
He gave her his full attention. She rarely ever spoke his full name instead of the little nickname she had given him. Prepare himself? For what? He was indeed very confused now. Whatever could be so wrong he would have to prepare himself? "I'm listening Aruna. Please just be blunt."

Why was she doing this again?! Delano was such a kind stallion, truly her savior. If her heart hadn't already been locked up and taken like it had... if she had met Delano first... then perhaps she wouldn't be seeing this kind of thing. She wouldn't be the way she was. She would be a completely different mare. She chewed on her bottom lip a moment, taking as much time as she could get to gather herself back together. "...I'll try," she whispered, and then after another long moment, spoke again.
"Delano, I... we can't be... mates... anymore," she forced out the words as coldly and heartlessly as she could. She doubted he would have appreciated it if she spoke kindly and warmly with them. Hearing those words falling from her mouth made her close up, her golden eyes a frozen stone, rather than the molten hue they normally were. Her expression emotionless as she watched her now former mate's reaction.
She expected him to fly off or throw a fit, anything, to tell her he was upset. She loved his calm reassurance... she loved him, still, but... it was not the same as before. Had it always been a love that was the same like... like with Rahu? She mentally winced as the name popped up in her mind. Why was she doing this again? Delano didn't need this... she should have forced herself to forget about Rahu...
But she couldn't. She didn't like how she was hurting Delano, either. She was a horrible mare. Yes, she was being overly emotional. Yes, she was depressed. Yes, she was a lovesick and horrible mare. She felt something slide down her cheek, and immediately she was startled to find she had started to cry. And the feeling in her chest clenched. It was an odd mixture between happiness and sadness.
And she didn't like it, not at all.

Delano stood frozen as she had just spoken words he had not expected to hear uttered by....by the one who had captured his heart. He could see all the emotion within her as a tear slid down her cheek, but her golden eyes were as cold as stone. But he did not need to see into them to see how she was feeling. It was clear as day in her body language and how she was acting.
He mulled over the words in his mind as he stood still and lifeless. How had this come about? Should he have foreseen it the day he found her pregnant with Rahu's foals? He did not have to ask her why. He knew now. There really could only be one reason....the dark stallion of which he hated with his whole being and had assumed as an enemy. He tolerated Rahu for her sake. That was a mistake. Perhaps if Rahu was not around they would be happy...if he had not saved Rahu that day.....but he shook his head to clear his thoughts. He should not be thinking like that.
His head dropped to his chest as his eyes closed and he sighed. It was the sigh of a heart broken stallion. But there was no talking her out of this. As much as he wanted to talk her into staying with him, that he loved her, he could not. He could not force her or ask her to be with him if her heart was not truly in it...it would be living a lie, and sadly he would know it as well. In any case they would both be miserable.
He lifted his head to allow his red eyes to meets hers...perhaps for the last time. Everything was apparant in them. You could see his heart breaking and the overwhelming emotion, even though he fought to contain it.
A single tear slid down his cheek. "If that is what you wish Aruna...then go be with him." There was nothing else to say. He was sure she could see what he was feeling...what this had done to him. But he would not break in front of her...no...he had to be alone for that. He turned as he prepared to walk away and out of her life. To run from this place and never return.

She flinched at his words, and then looked away, afraid that whatever else she said would hurt him even more. She knew his pain; moreso than anything. It had happened to her before... and then she caught his tear. She froze; she was like a statue. Seeing the strong, handsome unicorn before her, whom she loved dearly, cry, was an incident that made her feel more heartless than ever.
She didn't know what else to say, and so watched as the one chance at a stallion who was truly good to her, loved her purely, and loved her openly, walk out of her life forever. Why she was making such a choice as this she only knew the answer deep within her heart. She hoped with all her might the brilliant red knight that had come to her rescue would find true peace and happiness...
Aruna knew that his happiness and joy couldn't be with being with her. She was too complex, too broken, too... well, she was just not good for him. No, she was a burden... and she was glad to have lifted that. She hoped. She saw so much darkness it was hard for her to tell which direction she should be going; her spark of light had dimmed somewhat... her future dull rather than bright.
She glanced once at her home with Delano, shook her head and grit her teeth... turned her back, walked away. Never looked back; the few good memories she shared here; they were stored away, only to be looked upon with passing thought... never to happen ever more.
...So began her hard, long journey to create her dream family with the stallion she truly loved...
...Rahu.
