Already posted some, but moved out to highlight it's awesomeness.
Gunslinger Girl.
A group of young girls are saved from disability and certain death by the Agency. They are trained as assassins and spies then paired with an adult agent, together known as fratello.
The girls don't have a big evil to fight and most reviews seem to find the stories pretty boring. I, on the other hand, am fascinated. In the first place, the cover pairs Henrietta with a gun and a violin case. A little girl and a gun.
Second, the implications are many. What value does society place upon disabled people? What is the cost to the children of losing their innocence? Girls who can fight, rock on!! The relationships between the girls and their much older handlers: love or dependence or what? The list can go on.
P.S. The anime version loses something. I didn't like it very much.
