Sairin padded along the river silently, nose testing the air as he strode along the land. He was, as normal, silent, bearing around his neck what was once his mother's bone necklace. But now, she was gone, and the youngest was able to fend for themself, with the pride's help.

For the first time, he was truly alone. Uneeded.

And the great lion resented it. He longed to protect, he longed to be needed to guard someone. It was what the young lion knew. Breifly, his mind danced to the stories of his childhood, and he sighed. They were but stories to him; barely real. And slowly, surely, the great lion continued walking along the river, until he came upon the lioness.

Her fur was what, as the snow of the mountain, and his own mane, yet her shoulders were marked almost like wings. She struck him as very odd, but very young. A sniff told the great beast she was older than appeared, and he looked around, unafraid. The female was sleeping. But there was another. Silently, Sairin sait on his haunces to wait.

Not daring to have laid on his back, Shin lay curled in almost a fetal position as he slept where he hid. It made him feel bad that he wasn't sleeping in the open with Kabichi, but he was still fearful of other lions. Not as fearful as some lions could get, but he still feared anything that made him think of his father.

His father... Toshiro... The almost constantly angry lion plagued his dreams, though another presence calmed them. He couldn't fully explain it, but it was a lioness, dark as his father and most of his sibblings, with eyes a brighter green than his father's. In his dreams, she scolded Toshiro, and his father called her mother. And then she turned to Shin and comforted him, and suddenly he was a tiny cub again, shying from his father's anger for the first time, only this time into the arms of this almost transparent lioness. In his dreams, she whispered to him 'Find Sairin, he'll help you.'

The young lion awoke suddenly, red eyes clouded with sleep as he gasped slightly. It was so real... He looked around, expecting the lioness. But he found nothing, just Kabichi near by and a towering lion. Wait, a towering lion? He got up, trying to roar at the other. But it was pitiful, really. He panicked a bit, hurrying to get between the stranger and Kabichi. "D-don't you t-touch her, or I'll.. I'll..." His mind drew a blank.

The larger lion flicked his ears and looked at the other lion. A piebald... Almost like Toshiro. But this was no adult. And he seemed a bit nervious. Calmly, the adult rose, and padded over, the hyena bones swaying as he approached, staring coldly.

"I do not harm those whom bring no harm. Why are you in these lands?"

The question was not aggressive, but the silky muscles were more than enough warning.

The sound of voices awoke Kabichi as well, the loiness groggily sitting up before blinking.

Oh Gods. A Native.

"I.. We're..." He trembled a bit, shrinking back. The other lion was bigger... MUCH bigger. A slight breeze brushed past them, a decidedly feminine voice whispering 'Sairin... Nephew.' Shin shivered, looking around. Where had that come from? For a brief moment, he swore he saw near by the lioness from his dreams, but as soon as he looked, she was gone.

The red-eyed lion looked back at the larger male, his fear suddenly seeming to just... Melt away. Was this him? Was this the lion he was told to find? "We... We left the Pridelands a while ago... To escape my f-father.." The word suddenly seemed to leave a bad taste in his mouth. Did he hate his father? Upon thinking about it... He did.

Sairin blinked, hearing of the land he once wished to live based on stories. His jaw dropped slightly. The stories of the Pridelands were good-- could evil truly exist there?

"Your.... Father?"

Kabichi nodded, padding to sit next to Shin protectively.

"His father beats him."

Sairin narrowed his eyes, remembering his own lack of a father.

"Why?"

Sitting down, Shin looked down at his forepaws, the left of which - Other than the striping from his mother - looked just like his father's. "I'm weak and stupid..." His ears folded back, eyes brimming with tears. At least, that's what his father had told him a lot. "I try my best, but I do everything wrong.."

Sairin sighed, approaching to teen to try to give him an encouraging nudge. He bent down, and stopped, nose in the boy's shoulder.

That scent.

The female's, and an unfamiliar. But that scent.

Toshiro. Toshiro had done this. Sairin rose slowly, lips beginning to curl as a deep, gutteral growl began to rise in his throat.

Kabichi reacted first, leaping to cover Shin with her body as she snarled back at the larger lion, who only turned away.

"Your father. His name is Toshiro, isn't it?"

His first instinct at the sight of anger was to shrink down and try to look smaller. When the male didn't lash out at him, Shin looked up. He tilted his head at the question, then nodded slowly. "Yes... D-do you know him...?" How did this lion know his father? Were they related? Old enemies...? He could see some old battle scars on the older lion. Had his father done that? His young mind raced with questions.

Sairin studied the young lion a very long time, tail swaying before he rose, turning away wistfully, remembering the day he met his brother.

"I do. He is the one who slew my mother." Sairin sat, hanging his head, wishing he could have spared his mother the heartbreak of her son rejecting her. His words....

"Your father is my brother."

Kabichi's ears pricked. Toshiro killed his own mother? An involuntary shudder, and she moved near Shin nervously.

"Why did he kill your mother?"

"Because my brother is consumed with hatred."

The shock certainly registered on Shin's face. This lion was his uncle... The next words shocked him far more, though. His own father... Had killed his grandmother? He shook his head, jaw hanging down. "He... He did THAT?" It made Shin fear for his life even more. If his father would kill his own mother... Would he kill his own son, too? "Is there some way I can... Can defend against him...? I don't wanna die..."

Sairin glanced at Shin, thinking silently for several minutes, about what his mother would do. She'd have taken him in. Sairin took a deep breath, and padded back to Shin.

"Then I will protect you."

The lion licked the others' ear affectionately, purring deeply in his chest.

Shin shivered a bit, not used to an adult male NOT showing hostility towards him. After a moment, he relaxed, closing his eyes. Leaning, he soon found himself slightly enveloped by his uncle's snowy mane. It was comforting, very comforting...

His mind suddenly returned to the Pridelands, to his brothers and sisters. Red eyes opened as he stated, "I have to go back there... My brothers and sisters are at risk. What if he turns on one of them, too? Sekizen'll show the scars more than I do!" It filled him with panic as he stood, blowing his mane out of his face. Looking around, he went over to Kabichi and asked, "Will you return with me...? Knowing he's there..."

Sairin nodded slowly, rising.

"I will. I don't doubt he would harm the others either." Sairin growled.

"We'll need to move quickly. We can go through the mountains--"

Kabichi, however, finally piped up, shaking her head.

"That'll take us through the elephant Graveyard, where the hyenas live!"

She quivered slightly, not forgetting the tormentors she once met. Sairin studied her face, and sighed. "Perhaps a round about route...."

After a moment of thought, Shin started in the direction they'd come. "How about we follow the path we came in on? We'll avoid the Graveyard, and make it to the Pridelands..."

"That would work." Kabichi nodded, looking back at the larger lion behind her. Sairin nodded-- if they knew the way, he would follow. Slowly, he began following, giving one last look over his shoulder. His family would be safe without him. It was his neices and nephews that needed him now.

With that thought, the massive lion began to follow the younger duo, paws not making a sound.
