It had been days... weeks since he'd seen the sunlight without the streaming curtains distorting the yellow rays that filtered through his duplex window. Despite the will to NOT will himself to move, Alec had to admit to himself that this sort of behavior was unhealthy and not acceptable. He hadn't eaten, a dangerous move for a sharkboy. But what of a sharkboy in a wheelchair? He was harmless. Even so, he convinced himself he had to retreat from the cocoon he'd created for himself, the ceramic bathtub and blank walls, he needed fresh air.

So, even with no indication that Amaya had already been returned safely to her duplex before Christmas had arrived, the boy had his mind set on the worst. He was convinced she'd have called him, stopped by, done SOMETHING to let him know she was ok. She wasn't like him, she wasn't cold. She cared.

Did she care?

It didn't matter anymore. Nothing mattered. He lost his legs, his hope, his passion for life and now he'd lost his will to struggle on; Amaya. She was gone, she'd finally moved on and left the childish boy behind her. Could he blame her? He'd have done the same. In fact, he'd expected it from the very beginning. They always ended up leaving.

The moist tropical air wasn't soothing at all to the rough grey skin covering his bones, it was sickening. He felt sick to his stomach, or was that the lack of food? He didn't care. Right now, all he cared about was the battered rims of his wheelchair and the strained effort of pushing them along in order to drag himself farther away from his duplex. He had no destination in mind besides the vague idea of a slow 'roll' around the village, head hanging down with the effort to move, his head filled with self-torment, confusion and disturbance.

Zach was quite happy with how things were going. Despite it supposedly being sometime in winter, the sunlight was warm and everything seemed calm almost to the point of being surreal. Not that he minded. He still had difficulty in his walking, but that was only if he tried to run. There was no such thing as a comfortable position flat on his feet or walking on his long toes, or at least he had yet to find one. Shirts were still out of the question, so his white scarf and pants were the best he could do. He'd woken up fairly early, and spent a while just looking down at the village from the top of his duplex stairs with his wings spread wide to stretch them. There were few places he could spread them to their full 12 feet, though it felt great to. Deep down he did wonder whether they were enough to get him off the ground, but he doubted it.

Accompanied by a soft jangling of metal at his side, he maneuvered down the steps of his upstairs duplex and briskly across the smooth dirt in front of the building. Just his luck, the place was deserted at this time of day. Well, except for one lone wheelchair-bound figure heading in the opposite direction. Zach turned his head, curious to at least see who it was.

The scales that plated his face over prevented any exaggerated expression from him, so all that Alec received was a sort of blank stare with a downward curl at the ends of his mouth. Though it had been no real fault of the teen, Alec had gotten Zach thrown out of the village right about the time when Annie was first on the loose. Not to mention those sharp teeth gave him a few bleeding bites on his shoulder at the time. What had become of him now? He couldn't increase his pace any more but he was faster than the wheelchair and caught up. Being a good eight feet tall, it felt weird towering and he tried to bend his neck down as far as it could comfortably go. He wasn't sure what to say, so a greeting would have to suffice for now.

"Hey."

Despite being enthrawled in his own thoughts, Alec had definetly heard the cumbersome shuffling from behind well before the tall shadow loomed over his shoulder. He made no effort to turn around at first, a sort of strong tingle at his far-left side telling him the direction of the assaillant, much like when one's hair stood up on the back of their necks on its own. Nothing prepared him for what he suddenly saw once the heavy-footed thing had caught up, the yellow, slitted orbs appearing much closer to his height than he would've liked. "UH!" The boy choked out with a started, curved jaw agape in awe of the pillar of shimmering red that was now blocking the irritating sunlight off his face. Adrenaline shot through his system before his mind could register the event, though he definetly felt a pang of familiarity in the overall look of the beast. It was Zach for sure, but so changed! He was like something straight out of a movie though he knew if he tugged on those scales, they'd never come off naturally. His mind was in a blur at what he was seeing, unable to focus on travelling anymore so that he stalled right where he sat and merely stared for a long while.

"Ay..." He spoke slowly once he'd caught his barrings, ink-black pupils focusing and refocusing according to the slightest shifts in light. "Wow... ye loo' crazeh, m'n." of course by 'crazy' he meant unreal, awesome, something a teenager would say when his father offered the keys to his car for the first time. It was blunt but then again, was there any point in hiding his feelings anymore?

Zach took a step backward, toes grabbing at the ground in a way all too reminiscent of hands. The noise Alec made surprised him, sending his frill half-fanned. It gave him an opportunity to get a better look at the teen and how warped he'd become. But better, better than just being a human. Though... it couldn't be... was that bark and leaves? Probably a story not worth inquiring about.

He stared back at Alec and his wheelchair, wondering what he could possibly be thinking. Admittedly, Zach couldn't help but stare every time he walked past a mirror. It was unreal to think that the monstrous red lizard that regarded him in the reflection each time was really him. And though during all the time not spent in front of the mirror he got to avoid the confusing problem of recognizing the crocodile-like face as his own, he could still see the shining red scales all over the rest of him and move limbs that shouldn't exist. He'd lost an arm once, what felt like so long ago, but now the scales were interlocked in such a way that he'd never be able to prove it. Entirely whole, physically, and perhaps even more so with the wings and tail. He'd been erased as neatly as his past had. It was just too hard to see this draconic form as anything other than some entirely different 'person', and as such he had to be as well. Of course he knew that the creature in the mirror was himself; he wasn't stupid. But to make the connection between the reality of things and who he was had grown very difficult. No matter how many times he thought it, there was just no way to quickly and skillfully grasp the idea that he'd changed completely. Far safer to make a leap of faith that he was someone else now, and leave coming to terms with his past actions behind him. Very far behind him, preferably.

"Hey, I'm not crazy. The people who want to get off this island are," he grinned, oddly defensive. Because he wasn't crazy. This was the life he wanted, and he was grateful he'd gotten back everything he'd lost in his twisted human life and more. Maybe it was because the teen had once attacked him, but it was just unnerving to be stared at like that with such a predatory gaze. It stirred in him the self-preservation that had only grown over the course of his stay on the island. That slack-jawed stare and those teeth and constantly shifting eyes... And no one seemed to be anything but terrified of Zach's new, better form as a dragon, and it was almost disappointing. And with that primal part of him quite indistinguishable from the remains of his rational human self, getting defensive seemed a perfectly good course of action. Not that he thought about it too hard. Thinking before he acted was a waste of time.

In a somewhat cyclical fashion, Alec was startled by the dragon-man's sudden reaction, moreso by the exentuation of his emotions via a wide array of bodily movements that created a frightening picture for a boy in such a helpless state. The awkward flap around his neck was the obvious focus of his attention at first, having not understood its purpose until its dynamic unfurling that gave the obvious illusion of an increase in size. If the sharkboy had been on edge before, than now he was unspeakably so. Fortunately the clearly startled expression helped to lessen the impact of the man's already-ferocious look. Scared of a boy in a wheelchair?

The awkward distance between the two offered Alec the opportunity to get a better look of the large, beastial form infront of him that he couldn't before from such an angle. If anything, the unbelievable accuracy to the fictional monster that automatically came to mind was enthrawling. Unlike Zachary it seemed, he'd received no elaborate 'gains' from his transformations so far. Where the crimson, scaley man had adopted a tail, the odd flap of skin, claws, even a pair of impressive though frightful bat wings among other things, the teenager had only parts of him taken away. His hair, his teeth, his legs. He felt as if he was slowly being wittled away while sitting in sheer awe of a being that had gained so much more. Was it a punishment? Was it possible that Dr. Moreau was able to inflict such malicious changes into someone's life and subsequently remove a man bit by bit from existence if he so chose? The man was definetly not God but he did seem to have an overall plan. Perhaps if he was able to worm his way back into the Doctor's good graces he'd grant the shrivelled teenager a pair of wings for motility in pity, long-convinced that he'd never stand again anyways.

As Zach finally spoke, he was relieved to hear a nicer tone than one would expect from such a thing as him. At first he wasn't sure if he was making a joke at all, though it seemed like it. A personal jab to the absolutely unforgettable experience of a boy attempting murder in the name of freedom? It was laughable if anything, he admitted. Besides, everyone knew about that triumphant failure, he'd figured long ago that he'd been the joke of the village for awhile back then. He didn't think it was funny at all.

But he pulled the edges of his curved mouth to produce a toothy smile, offering a chuckle to clear the air. Sure he was crazy.

"Zach." The teen spoke, still plastered with a grin. "Long time, big changehs. 'ow ye been, mate?"

The frill remained in its somewhat open position, intricately linked to just how much Zach clenched his jaw. Practice made perfect, and though the frill was now larger than ever his experience made it easy to move it without having to think about it. There was a sharp pain from the action, but his very bones had been aching since his last change. Even the small dose of painkillers he forced down daily just covered up the residual pain rather than cure it. Zach regarded the shark's grin as some sort of hostile baring of teeth at first, but his initial suspicions seemed to be proven false by the laugh. Was it just a grin after all? He relaxed a little.

The kid was in a wheelchair, he remembered. It was unlikely that even with ill intentions could he do much of anything. Zach wasn't sure what to say about the boy's obviously disabled state. It conflicted with his current view of how things were supposed to go. Everyone's changes were supposed to better them (like how his own changes had bettered himself), but this was just... cruel. True, the boy had made a huge mistake in trying to kill Aubrey, but the changes weren't supposed to be a punishment. Luckily, it wasn't long before he created for himself an explanation to suit his interests. This, he reasoned as he glanced at a couple of leaves, must have been a serum of Dr. Moreau's doing. Zach knew little about the man beyond a death threat, being cast out of his duplex for a lengthy time, and of course the many accounts of his madness from islanders he'd met long ago. No wonder Alec had such a sorry fate. A horrible fate, but one he was safely exempt from sharing by way of extreme fortune that Sabin had chosen him to become his dragon. Selfish as it was, he felt even better about himself.

"Great!" he exclaimed, his voice seeming to have a permanently raspy quality to it, as though his throat had never fully recovered from its sudden jolt in length. And he certainly felt great, barring the little incident with Gaius, of course. But Zach had learned from his mistakes then and Sabin hadn't held it against him. Almost protectively, Zach twined a couple of large fingers around the medicine bag at his side. He hadn't caught on to the teen's discomfort, being far too confident in his views on the ways of the island to realize his comment was insulting. It had been his assumption that Alec knew full well that what he'd done was, well, completely and utterly wrong. Unaware, he continued on his tangent of praise for the labs. "And yes, big changes. I'm done with those, finally. And they've helped me so much. I feel like a different person. It's just great. I owe Dr. Duvert three times over now."

"But what about you? You're looking, uh... different." It was hard to give a compliment to the teen's strange features. If he hadn't met Anjali he wouldn't have believed those were real leaves that poked out of Alec's patches of bark-like skin. He was careful to keep his jaw movements to a minimum. What had happened to him around Sid had been unfortunate and he didn't want a repeat of that disturbing jaw popping.

It was clear that Zach had no intention of merely passing by, though the teen didn't mind half as much as his irritation was trying to convince him otherwise. Seeing as his casual question had been of the obligatory kind, he was quite surprised to receive a rather enthusiastic and cheerful response from the dragon-man. Sure he looked amazing, but it was still hard to fathom that he'd rather be a gigantic lizard for the rest of his life while simultaneously disregarding the life he'd lead as a human being before. Then again, he hadn't even met Zachary before his first change and had no idea what his past life was like. In retrospect, his present monsterousity of a body might've been better than what God had given him.

Even with that understanding aside, he could've definetly done without the pro-torture speeches though. In a way it made him feel like he was standing at his doorstep back in Ireland trying to politely dismiss the preachers who'd come every so often to say a little surmon to save his soul, or ask for money for the church. He wasn't interested in the idea that some of the Staff actually had their feelings and lives in mind while making the best of a bad situation. Even if they were merely taking orders, those lab workers were that much closer to the demon in charge and that much at an advantage towards taking him out and freeing the prisoners on that island. Not taking the initiative was as bad as anything. Still, the young boy politely sat and listened to the man go on about how wonderfull and liberated he felt now, hiding an imbittered and somewhat envious display that he would've enjoyed expressing. If he was a human, then the situation would've been completely different as he felt no hesitation to give them a hard time any more. It sort of frightened him, this heartlessness.

He felt himself jolted back into the conversation once the question was deflected back to himself. It was definetly hard to think up an answer on how he was 'coping' while he was doing his best to ignore the obvious undertones to Zach's statement at the same. "Diff'ent" The boy began, chuffing his throat in a sound that was hard to interpret as malice or laidback acceptance. It took him awhile to compile somesort of response that didn't sound cynical. In his state of mind, it was difficult. "A've been... dealin'. Go' meself some neh wheels, can' ge' far frum wateh... y'neh, tha sorteh thing. Thin's 'ave been a lil' off recen'leh though..." He somehow was able to keep a straight, polite smile throughout his response by some miracle of self-control but he decided to test the waters by throwing in a shallow comment in respect to the crazy situation in the caf.

"Hey, changes can be rough. But I'm glad to see you're moving on. No sense getting stuck on the past." He shifted on his feet. At this rate that was going to become his personal mantra. He thought he'd caught a hint of bitterness from the teen, but he wasn't sure. With his neck still curved in an arc, he let his gaze quickly travel down to where the boy's mockery of feet were. A pair of pathetically small flippers, and more of that bark-like skin farther above them. So it seemed walking was impossible for Alec, but that wasn't what a shark was built for. "Have you... tried some swimming out in the lake?"

The drawn-out statement that Alec ended with caught his attention. He honestly had no idea what the teen meant. For Zach, things had been fine, wonderful even, for the most part. Even the fact that his last change had been painful enough to warrant being blocked out of his memory didn't put a damper on things. For the time being, he felt safe, safe from not only physical hurts but mental anguish as well. He gave Alec a quizzical look. "Off?"

Alec smirked, bracing himself against the armrests of his chair as he shifted himself to relieve a soreness from sitting so long. He hated this constant immobilization and the discomfort of all his fins poking out from odd angles on his body. It definetly made it harder to sit nicely in an upright chair all day. "Heh... neeeeh," The boy trailed off, momentarily distracted with the amusement he had concerning his own hesitation to swim. A creature with his body form and need for moisture should have undoubtably clued him in that he should start accepting the aquatic life, and yet he hadn't touched a body of water in weeks. "A'd probebleh sink like a rock o' somethin, a' least thas wha' 'am worreh'd abou'!" The images of the scenario made him chuckle, in a sad way finding at least inadequacy to be a minor and laughable setback. "Watch m'drown or somethin. A shawk drownin!"

As he chuckled away at the idea, it wasn't as noticeable that he was trying to delay the onset of Zach's second inquiry. Did he have to go into the whole explanation? Would Amaya be upset if she found out that he aided in the spread of some very embarassing rumors? With all this in mind, he still couldn't deny the fact that he had no idea if Amaya was even aware of the goings on in the Village at the moment, worst yet if she was alive to hear anything of the others on the Island.

In the end the teen decided on a happy medium. He couldn't deny Zach an answer now but he could deny him the icky details, so he began. "Ye well, 'ave been pretteh... ou' of i' recentleh. Somethin' happen'd n' th'caf wi'Maya. She go' pretteh ill from somethin t'deh wi' 'er changehs." He left it at that, self explanatory, all he needed to know.

"You'll never know until you try." Encouragement was what this guy needed. He needed to feel that this was better than his life before, even if perhaps thanks to Moreau it wasn't quite. There were some visible slits on Alec's neck. They were undeniably gills. Probably functioning ones, too, though only Alec would know for sure.

"Wait, Amaya's sick?" He couldn't stop his thoughts from flickering briefly to the graveyard and several of its more unsavory inscriptions, the ones denoting the deaths of islanders. His tail, which had been lazily swishing, stopped. She'd finished changing though. It couldn't be from those. Maybe it was just a jungle sickness. Curable. Yeah, that was it. Or perhaps it had to do with how bloated she'd looked before. Or the time she'd turned bright yellow. He was afraid to think too hard on that explanation, seeing as they'd both been a little strange then. "Is she better now? Y'know, I saw her turn yellow once... did she... change color again?"

Alec's wedged head had slowly drooped down as they both thought on the subject, eyes trailing across his lap until they became unconsciously fixed on his feet-fins. They always looked so stupid from that angle.

Marble-black eyes darted up rapidly as Zach began to speak, his words giving him the impression that he knew more about Amaya's condition than he'd previously thought. It made him curious in his own way, and more open to continue without fear of providing unnecessary information to someone who could do without. "Ye, a' noticed th'colleh bu' though' nothin' o' i', y'neh? Until she starteh'd gettin' all fa'. A' first a' though' i' was joost fa'..." A strong shudder ran down the line of striped dorsal fins as his voice trailed off once again. "Yea, realleh sick... a' mean... she was sick th'last time a' saw 'er. Th'labs wisked 'er off 'n a flash, ye think theh'd let me kneh somethin ay? She was n' th'caf an'... she was pregn'nt. All along." The boy's eyes were trained on Zach's yellow stare, a serious and bothered tone taking hold on his sounds.

He followed the story, worried enough that now two of his few 'friends' on the island were sick. Sid, and now Amaya. Just his luck, and theirs. The shark-boy seemed so torn up about it. It wasn't like anyone could have guessed she was sick except the doctors, and they apparently managed to figure that out and take her away to be treated. There wasn't really a way to say it though. Zach had full, unwavering trust in the labs. Those few graves he'd seen had been flukes, unimportant. If Amaya was in the labs she'd come out fine.

But the last remark floored him. He let out a wheeze and looked away from Alec, gaze unfocused. Had he - out in the jungle - they couldn't have - that just wasn't possible! "Pregnant!?"

Alec couldn't help but notice Zach's reaction to the understandably-shocking news, though his glare never wavered even after the dragon-man shifted his eyes. "She 'ad EGGS." The teen uncompassionately jabbed on in the conversation, suddenly determined to fill Zach in on the full story. He hadn't known that they'd been friends, which he assumed by the fact that Zach had known about her odd changes in the recent past.

the sharkboy's voice dropped to a dead tone as he seemed to hesitantly finish his thought, testing the words before he'd actually speak them though when he did, they were full of conviction. "A'd like t'find ou' who..." It was a hard pill to swallow. He was making himself feel naucious again. Naucious with guilt, regret, jealousy and self-hatred. "Resp'nsible." The syllables were sharp and stone-cold.
PostPosted: Mon Jan 15, 2007 2:30 am

"Eggs?" he repeated blankly. Though it was at this point nothing new, Zach had heard what happened to Billy after an incident with Colche. For a moment he was relieved by the realization that no one had done anything along those lines to him. Surely they wouldn't let something like this happen, or go without some form of retribution. His mind raced. It had been an accident. They'd both gone a little weird but nothing had happened. He could have sworn they'd done nothing more than an awkward hug, but he didn't have a crystal-clear recollection of the incident. And what of the cameras? Had they been too deep in the jungle to be seen? Sabin had said something about that once, something about dense foliage... "What, she... she laid eggs... in the cafeteria?"

It seemed like an appropriate time to fall back on his 'rebirth' mentality and did so. Even if... Amaya's pregnancy was partly his fault somehow (who knew how long half-lizard eggs took to gestate?), it was the fault of his imperfect human self and not the fantastic creature he was now. He'd long since abandoned most every memory from before the island and even a few from early on there as some sort of vessel of faults and mistakes. He'd been a weak and misguided creature prior to being recreated as a dragon, prone to making stupid mistakes and believing in fanciful lies. Not any more, though. He was above such things. What he believed now about anything was completely, utterly true, and no one would convince him otherwise.

But even if it had been his previous self, that was still him in some sense, and others wouldn't see the difference like he did. It sounded like Alec was accusing him, and he didn't know if denying it would do any good. Just because he didn't remember it happened didn't mean it couldn't have. After all... Aubrey had nearly been murdered once by him and he didn't remember a thing about that. All he knew was that a couple months just wasn't a rational amount of time for someone to carry eggs, and it was this single hope that he used to rid himself of blame. He was still dodging the beady-eyed stare the shark was giving him. Some moments went by before Zach choked out a response, one that wasn't particularly strong. "Ah. So would I. So would I."

Alec let his eyes waver from the dragonman as the unsettling, awkward discomfort he was observing was as noticeable as ever and it was that which was causing his temper to slowly flare like a glowing ember in his chest. Again, his gaze fell downwards until they focused on the blades of green grass crushed beneath the wheels of his chair, the concentration was almost intense enough to distract him. He wouldn't let himself become distracted though. Amaya wasn't ever the type to make a lot of friends. Zach was her friend, he was male, he was writhing like a worm in an eagle's fist and he was starting to paint a picture of himself reminiscent of a rather large bullseye.

"Don' look so guilteh." He suddenly, tentatively, calculatively began with the slightest of glances upwards towards Zachary. His mind was falling fast into that dark place that'd only begun seeding a permanent residence in his head since his last traumatic change. He trained his eye for a long, drawn-out moment on Zach's features before he inexplicably began to laugh, like he'd made a very amusing joke and he was just waiting for the red man to get it.
