A letter has arrived...

'Dear Duke of Bavaria,

I have a proposal to offer you that would be helpful for both parties involved. I know of your problems with the Magyars and how they are draining out your resources. I will help you with defeating them and replenishing your resources, for I understand the problems with barbarians such as the Magyars and know how troublesome they can be to a man in your power.
As you can easily see, the other Dukes, including the King himself, have yet to extend an offer of any type of help to you or I, to help us deal with those horrid barbarians, forcing us to deal with them as they hide themselves behind us.

I would like to propose that the Duke of Saxony signs a treaty with the Duke of Bavaria, promising that we will help one another defend against any attacks by our enemies.

From The House of Hramn,
The Duke of Saxony
Guntram Hramn'

It was a hectic day in the Bavarian court. A fair-sized Magyar raid had crossed into Bavaria for the first time in since the battle that had placed Victor on the throne, ending the brief peace that the horrible battle had managed to secure. The Magyars were cautious, staying just far enough away from any towns to avoid any real contact with Bavarian militia, but this coupled poorly with the news of a larger force gathering in Carinthia.

It was amid these worries that the Saxon messenger arrived. Although it took some coaxing, once Victor had read the letter he found it and what it offered far more interesting than the drawing he was occupying himself with when the messenger arrived.

For a time he sat, his eyes fixed on the paper as he whispered to himself, exploring the events that could transpire depending which reply he sent back. He had heard of the Duke Guntram of Saxony, both of his reputation and of how he was received at the Diet in Frankfurt. He was definitely not a popular man in Germany, that much was certain, and there was no doubt that he was now simply attempting to befriend the most powerful person that wasn't already an enemy. With both the king and the neighboring Duke of Swabia loathing the man, to accept him as an ally might make enemies that Bavaria was in no position to deal with.
Then again, Guntram's enemies might be just as desperate to prevent Guntram from making allies as Guntram was to gain them. As the most powerful man in the kingdom, even with a distracted ally such as Bavaria, the Duke of Saxony could easily stand toe-to-toe against the rest of the kingdom and have a reasonable chance at victory. A innocent treaty such as this could be enough to make the other dukes worry about a possible alliance, bringing much-needed funds and privileges to the dukedom in an attempt to appease Guntram's only possible ally.

And besides, the Duke of Saxony had a point: Bavaria stood as the main stalwart against the Magyar horde, but the rest of the kingdom certainly didn't treat the duchy as such. Saxony and Bavaria at least had common ground as the kingdom's frontier.

After some reflection, Victor penned a reply and waved the messenger off, returning to his drawing slightly more distracted than he was before.
