Why are napkins so absorbant? I mean with the use of napkins aren't we just abusing the good reputations of sponges?

no, I use my shirt. But if I wasn't wearing a shirt, I would use my pants, for some reason, If I wasn't wearing pants, I would use a sponge.

Yeah, it would. Give me a napkin, a crowd...or just a few people, and a flea's third left leg and you will see me do some guruma to a napkin.
