Same, same. I've had my fair share of mary sues to deal with. I remember a while back this one girl RPed with me and refused to come up with any plots, and then any plot I came up with she'd be like "____ thinks this is stupid!" and I said, well if you think it's a bad plot, then you should come up with one and help me with it, and she replied "I don't think it's stupid, but my oc does! With good reason!" and it's like... what... are you your oc now? .___. I can't come up with all the plots! RP is about compromise and teamwork, about building off one anothers characters and twists, you know? I don't like doing 100% of the rp and I don't like being controlled with 100% the rp, if that happens, the two players are better off writing a story of their own, imo... :C

Oh god that sounds really bad. xD The whole "Dramatic depressing back story but they're totally fine now!!" like... no... half of these OCs I've met were like serial killers and had their entire family slaughtered... the whole Sasuke treatment and then it's like "BUT THEY'RE TOTALLY NORMAL NOW NO PTSD HERE!!" Like what. WHAT. WOULDN'T THEY BE A LITTLE MESSED UP? LIKE JUST A TAD? D: Like what's wrong with having a realistically damaged character? Why give them a backstory like that if you're not gonna follow up on it? People can't just pick and choose what they want to do. If they put in a messed up background, obviously the character will most likely be at least somewhat messed up.
And oh geez, how annoying, I'm sorry. : God mods make me so mad I just... your character is YOUR CHARACTER. MY CHARACTER IS MINE. PLEASE DO NOT DECIDE WHAT MY CHARACTER CAN DO. Like yes, if I'm out of line, sure, steer me in the right direction, don't go all dictator on me. xD && Ah, gotta love the sues who get with everyone. <___> Not all male characters were made to be with another oc. Hence the reason why I make all of my RP characters so unappealing. So literally they have 0 chance of getting together with someone because I've had like maybe 1 good romance RP with someone out of... oh a hundred or so in my 7 years of roleplaying. ;___; Ugh, sorry for the rants, I seem to pick the wrong RP buddies. <___> They either want porn or sues with me like wow.
And yes, homeward bound is SO cute. :3 One of my favorite childhood movies.

Yeah, either give the character issues with repercussions, or don't give the character issues at all. And that goes for stuff happening in the rp at that very moment too. Logically, if a person has been a murderer with such a terrible life, they most likely won't get along with every person they see right away. And if the character is "normal", and has lived an "average" life, then they shouldn't take everything odd that comes at them as if they've experienced it their whole lives. That's one thing I'm confident about when it comes to my characters. They're usually messed up if their past was messed up XD Creepy Mr. Twist, for example.
It seems like people are only out for porn in rps, self inserts, or just plain awful writing. It's hard to find decent rps to join when most of them are yaoi-based >.<

Yeah, it's like, I guess it comes off as really odd to me? Like that's not how real life works. I try to do the research and I try to make my characters as true to their background as possible, and no I don't expect everything to be perfect, how can one know if they don't have firsthand experience? But as long as someone acknowledges that there's things that just CAN'T be fixed with time, and put in the effort to research what happens, then I'm fine. I tried doing this with Mrs. Puppett, and is she perfect? No. But I'm in the process of fleshing her out more, and no she isn't happy dandy normal anymore. And she most certainly isn't normal. xD Obviously... And I enjoy Mr Twist. He's a good character. :3
And I know right? Like don't make someone with a crippling mental disease without the... you know... bad parts of the disease. You don't get to pick and choose what you want with it. Those sorts of problems aren't a "superpower", and neither is ANY OTHER DISEASE. I've RPed with SO MANY PEOPLE WHO TREAT IT LIKE THAT. And it's annoying. And what's with everyone with bipolar disorder without the actual bipolar? I've seen a LOT of OCs with it and it's so common, like I don't get it. >>; They treat it like a silly quirk and it's not.
And same goes for normality. I admit I have trouble with normal characters because you're totally right, they wouldn't react well to odd situations, so if they're put in an odd situation, they can't be like... oh... okay... like what? No? It's like Silent Hill 2 when James comes across the first monster in the game and you know what he does? He stares calmly and says "that's not human". NO REALLY? >________> I need to work on this with Iyokou... if we ever get the roleplay back up. xD
Yeah. I don't roleplay porn anymore, it doesn't really work with me and makes me uncomfortable. I prefer fluff, but is there any fluff? NOPE. And UGH self inserts don't even get me started. I've met 30 year old writing majors who STILL HAVE SELF INSERTS and they make them SO PERFECT like their example of what they dream to be and it's creepy to be honest. I did that in 3rd grade. o___o Please please move on and treat your oc better man. Your oc is not YOU.
And I've pretty much given up on trying to find a 1x1, because a) my ocs are ******** weird b) I don't like post styles and c) I'm so picky with what I want to do these days. I don't like random a** romance, gay straight or inbetween, it has to be natural. I don't want a central romance theme, and I don't like being stuck doing all of the work or none of the work. Some people I RP with don't get that roleplay is a two way street. It's give and take. It's win some and lose some. Your character doesn't get to be the center of everything all the time, and neither does mine. It's not really fair and doesn't really flesh out EITHER character with their flaws and strengths, you know?

&& Roleplay IS for fun, to me at least, but that doesn't mean they should slack off in the research department. I dunno, to me, it is fun. It's fun to learn stuff about these kinds of characteristics and flaws, and so like writing up a whole thing for them is fun, especially when you can then take those facts you've learned and then apply them to fantasy, you know? I'm not big on science or math, but hey, give me creative research any day. And it's that research and those flaws that make a character so... realistic, even in fantasy, you know? No, the research won't be perfect, but if you give a person just enough info, they can overlook the minor flaws in research.
And I know right? Those sorts of things are fine, if you do it realistically. Like someone doesn't just go through a horrible trauma and get out totally okay. Like that just doesn't happen. And YES. I despise people who give characters DID or schizophrenia or Bipolar disorder without even bothering to research or even, you know, WORK OUT IN THEIR HEAD WHAT WOULD LOGICALLY HAPPEN. Yes, it could be interesting to see how a character would work with such a disease, but NO IT'S NOT HAPPY SUNSHINE AND FLOWERS. People sometimes hurt others and themselves. It's not too fun to have people arguing in your head all the time or people telling you what to do 24/7. But then, if one does it realistically, then that actually makes a character more interesting, in my opinion, because then you can go into questions like, how do they function in society? How can they cope? Therapy? Asylums? It goes on and on, and yea people can bend logic, just not... to the point where it's just laziness. xD
True, true. I suppose it'd kind of suck to be playing a video game and suddenly the protagonist hides in a corner forever. xD But still, they can still be like WHAT THE ******** without being completely "oh" about it. ;__; That's what annoyed me about Silent Hill 2. James just... oh crazy disfigured monster I've never seen in my life? OH OKAY TOTALLY NORMAL RITE.
Oh man. Past ocs.... I used to have a self insert and she was like... awful, just AWFUL. Dx And I look back on my oldest OC (Ricco) and how he was before I did a massive overhaul on my characters, and... wow... sometimes I wonder... At least I'm not the only one... xD
1x1's are really hard to find the perfect partner, you know? And yes! I'm always left as the last person to post, it's so disheartening. xDD |

Yeah, I find some research fun too. I had to look up phobias because I figured one of my characters was too "Mr. Perfect", and I discovered a lot of interesting phobias. I ended up giving him Pediophobia, the fear of dolls. And wow, that just adds to another pet peeve of mine. When people give characters a phobia, but make it just to make them endearing or funny. I can understand certain phobias that might make a situation funny, but often times, phobias just plain mess people up. They do add a dimension of vulnerability to the character though.
I can be hard to work with a character with such issues, because if they're played realistically, they likely won't make many friends with other characters. It would certainly be interesting though.
It might be interesting to have a video game character utterly terrified by what's going on, so the player has to figure out ways around certain occurrences to prevent the "hiding in a corner" scenario.
I'm sure everyone has a character they hate XD I had one that could control time. How's that for being overly powerful? Lol. |

Yeah. I still need to work on how Iyokou's phobia goes. I've been too bendy with it lately. But yeah, some phobias cause actual issues? Like some people just CAN'T function if a phobia is that bad, you know? I try to stay away from phobias that can really cripple a person's ability to function. xD And if a character isn't perfect, that's okay! Roleplay, to me, is a way to help work out the kinks and bring out more character development with how they would react to certain situations, so it's okay to not be perfect together, but research should be put into the character, and I think people should at least care enough about their character to let them fall and develop themselves, you know? Not everyone wins everything and not everyone can overcome their fears. That's life. Like that's what I want to try and focus on with Iyokou and stuff if we ever do a roleplay again, since... he was tampered with to be in this RP so why not? xD

And yeah, it can be hard to work with a character with flaws like that, but it would indeed be interesting to see how it'd pan out. And characters don't need to be crippled or insane or whatever to be not a sue. Often I see characters who have all these things wrong with them and never deal with the weaknesses that come with being stuck with a horrible phobia or a disease, or whatever. Then normal characters can still be good characters. Like even if there's nothing "unique" about them, people are greedy, lying, rude, insensitive, impulsive beings. People don't seem to get that. .___.'' I dunno. Like I said before, you can't just pick the good stuff about character development! Dx No one is perfect! They get NONE of my sympathy.
Yeah, it would have been funny if you could play as Leonardo in Assassin's Creed. xD Since he's a pacifist and kind of a coward, hahaha. I think someone said they accidentally punched him on a mission and he hid in a corner. I was laughing so hard.
PFFT. Well they could totally ******** up the space time continuum you know? I had a character who was a goddess who controlled LIFE AND DEATH ITSELF and could fly and shoot ice and s**t and man it was AWFUL. I didn't even use an original design. I just copied sango from Inuyasha. I think this was back in 3rd grade. xD Those were the dark days... |

Yeah. My character with Pediophobia just stops moving and can't do anything if he sees a doll, but if the doll is removed from sight for enough time, he starts to calm down. I thought it would be an interesting fear, considering he's a tough lady's man who usually plays it cool all the time. And yeah, rps are great for working out how a character functions. I've fleshed out a lot of characters using rps before.
I've seen a lot of just plain, human, healthy characters made my some people that were just as interesting as the magical fantasy ones. As long as they're played right, they can be the most intriguing characters. XD
Oh geez, fan characters XD I've seen so many of those that just make my skin crawl.
