Mine tend to happen when I am busy. For the most part I am able to remember most of the idea, but when I go to write it down or type it up, the ideas stop coming and if I'm lucky they will return. I am lucky to be able to finish up a story at all. -.-

Oh, that is exactly how mine work. They love to crop up on me at work, when I should be paying attention to totals on the cash register and not fantasizing about running amok with fictional characters >.>; It doesn't help that I work into the evening and get the computer even later and that my memory is short lived. If I'm lucky, but 11 in the evening, they won't have fizzled out and I'll at least get out enough that I can continue it later.

I get most of my bunnies in the form of pictures while listening to music on my mp3 player. especially while walking to school.
and I remember Every. Single. One. IN MY HEAD!!
and I can replay them simply by listening to that same song.
or by thinking. its easiest when I've got the song.
which could be why I'm so mentally retarded.
and its always about the same 2 characters. I think I've finally finished that damn sequel, and another plot bunny pops up... aand the story has to be CHANGED to fit it IN and it REALLY PISSES ME OFF!!!

They come in different ways. Sometimes I'll be daydreaming when all of a sudden it hits me mentally! OW! lol

Or sometimes I'll be reading a book and picture it as a fanfic. I'll tweak a few plotlines here and there to make it more original. And then I'll be, "God! I need to write this down!"

I feel your pain. My bunnies are.. *shudder* scary. A lot of them are random, though. Like this one about Neji-kun and chili paste. 3nodding

Plot bunnies... Hmmm... I'm usually just minding my own business when suddenly I have a really, really, really.... -five minutes later- really, nagging idea which nibbles at my brains like they were carrots. And they're random.

I don't think mine are Plot Bunnies so much as they are Plot Nutrias...

Either way, they are the worst. While I cannot write, they bombard me with colorful ideas that I cannot remember later.

Here's a common scenario:

Me: *doing something important that I cannot stop in the middle of*

Plot Nutria: Hey Kisai! Write this now! this dude totally has a rainbow-colored lock on a chain that he wears around his neck and when he unlocks it, it becomes an XBOX HUEG sword! >:3

Me: I can't write this right now! Why do you torture me?! TwT

Plot Nutria: Because ideas are fleeeee~eeee~tiiiii~iiing!

Me: This is madness!

Plot Nutria: Madness!? This-IS-WRITING!

Me: I hate you, Plot-RAT.
