.xx¤ Theme song:

.xx¤ Biography: “They say it’s hard living in a world full of villains, wrong. It’s hard living in a world of quirk users and you are one of the few born without one.”

What started off as a recessive genetic mutation has now become a major genetic characteristic. One peculiarity user becomes eighty percent of the human population who has one. And the rest of the human population has gone down to twenty percent. Not a small number but it is now considered rare to not have a peculiarity. And sadly those who get the short end of the stick are at a disadvantage to the rest. Having to work twice as much just to be able to catch up with them. And Jum was ready to take that challenge.

"Both of my parents are heroes, can you imagine what it is like finding out that your child will not carry your legacy? Not carrying your title when they have their own... They don't need to tell because of the looks I get from their fellow friends when they come over. I got over it."

Memories between middle school and high school are something he doesn't want to share. At that age, it is very hard for someone who didn't have a peculiarity and Jum would rather have those memories a blur except the memory of when he met Caleb. It was during his middle school years. Caleb was a transfer student at that time and he was the only student who was kind to him and this is where their friendship began. His peculiarity was that he can create a single or multiple halos made of light or fire.

"He was my only true friend. He didn't care for what I have or don't, but who I am.."

The two studied in different schools but they managed to keep in contact. Caleb continued on his hero training while Jum went to get his first doctorate in Psychology. That was around the time the war broke out and they were recruited to help. The two friends enrolled in, Caleb was put on the front lines but.. Jum was rejected because he had no peculiarity. But before the other friend off, Jum made him promise to come back when the war was over... but he didn't.

"He broke his promise.."

He then devoted his time to continue his studies to get a master's in Neurology. He didn't just lose a friend to the war, he lost more than that. Which only became the fuel to his goal to study villains, he wants- no, he needs to know why. Why are they like this, what causes them to be like this. That was why he went on to be a Forensic Psychologist. He spent years interviewing different villains, getting under their skin, getting a rile out of them. They were his subjects to his experiment and he used them to get the information he's looking for. Apparently, word has spread around because he was soon transferred from his hometown of Seodaemun-gu. Seoul to the states to work with the villains there. Years have passed but it felt like nothing has changed for the better. He wants to teach the future generation what he learned from the years he spent interviewing villains, so they can understand what’s going on inside of the head of a villain. An advantage that is bound to be helpful while fighting them. So he turned in his resignation form and left with the promise that he’ll have recommendations for his future occupation for all the work he has done at that prison. Not long after he received a letter from the headmaster which was certainly a surprise. The letter contained a contract to became a teacher. He wanted to take a break from his current work cause it can be very mentally draining, especially when you constantly work with that society considers a threat. Surely teaching teenagers will be a nice break.

{Strengths}
.xx¤ Can keep his personal and professional life separate, more so with his previous work.
.xx¤ Has high ambitions and determination.

{Weaknesses}
.xx¤ Minor case of inferiority complex
.xx¤ Has difficulty letting go of the past

【P e c u l i a r i t y 】

The thing is, he does not have one, he was one of the few who were born without one.

Although. He majored in both psychology and neurology and has a good knowledge of human behaviour and way of thinking that he can tell when someone is lying and has a high accuracy of 9/10 times he is right.

As a former psychologist (who has worked with incarcerated villains to study them and their crimes to find the common traits between villains who committed similar/ same crimes) he brought it into his daily life; he can analyze a person’s behaviour & habits. With that, he has an understanding of the person and what is going on inside their head. [Wouldn't consider this like a peculiarly, just something he grew a habit of doing from his previous occupation]

Some of the italics are mental notes for Jum to mention in the lesson like a side note

Theories:

Learning: Criminal behaviour is learnt and maintained
Operant conditioning: (Robbing gets $) / Process: Learn through outcome
Classical conditioning: (Dog hearing the bell knowing it’ll get food) / Process: Learn through association
Observational/ Social learning: (Copycat crimes) / Process: Learn through observation

Social cognition:
Decode social cues, interpret cue, find responses, select response and enact response.
This is very helpful when you need to defuse a stressful situation with a villain.

Developmental:
Identity: [Identity search] is a life long process but it more prominent in adolescence due to physical / cognitive changes

Question self / identity crisis [midlife crisis]

Sociology:

Strain: People conform to society’s attitudes and values. When they do not have the means to achieve high goals, a strain between the goals and the means occur and people have to decide whether to give up their goals or to attain them through illegal means.

Labelling: People given negative label act according to self-fulfilling prophecy - Example: The Hatter
He was from around my time so I never interviewed him, I studied on him with the limited information of him but from a young age he was given the label villain and people would tell him he’s mad as a hatter; thus his alias.
We will talk more of him in forcible confinement and mental health

Aggression:

Affective/ reactive aggression: In reaction to emotions and perceived provocation
Instrumental aggression: Motivated by a goal.

Some acts can show both types of aggression.

Homicide:

Mass murder:
More than 3 victims at 1 times
Depressed, angry & unsuccessful
Ready to be killed or commit suicide.
Choose target carefully; often spouses and children, co-workers

Serial murder:
More than 3 victims at different times
Locations may vary; biological predisposition; childhood trauma; low-self esteem; facilitators like pornography
Male, white, usually alone
Female serial killers are very rare, 17% of all serial homicides were committed by women.

Male vs Female Serial killers
Male: Strangulation, beatings; strangers
Female: Poisoning - “Natural appearing” death; people they know

Victims: Vulnerable people, prostitutes, seniors, homeless people & runaways

Mostly strangers (70% crimes)
Location familiar to attackers
Troubled childhood, 80% had highschool education
Half had psychiatric diagnosis: antisocial personality disorder is the most prevalent

Types of crimes:

Familicide (Spouse and children):
Fathers are more likely to do this; some commit suicide afterwards
Despondent non hostile killer - depressed and worried about his family (ex. After losing a job)

[Artois Lennox; Peculiarity: Poison Manipulation. Poisoned his wife and daughter; Eleanor & Ophelia awhile they were asleep. It was noted that Artois’ company went bankrupt and he with other employees were out of the job.]

Hostile accusatory killer - hostile towards wife/ husband (due to perceived infidelities)
Mother kill their children;
Impulsive, reacting to child behaviour - high stress in life
Mental Illness
Fear of rejection by loved ones - postpartum psychosis [1-2 per 1000 births]

Domestic Murder:
Male being victim or witnessing violence in childhood
Male substance abuse
Seperation or threat of separation by female (risk decreases over time after separation)
Male antisocial/ dependent problems/ stalking behaviour

Parricide (Parents):
Being abused; instrumental gain

[Charlotte Page; Peculiarity: Paralysis shock, immobilised and strangled both her parents; Lucetta & Curt. In her interview she said that both her parents abused her while the other parent turned a blind eye.]

Terrorism:
The use of serious violence against people or property, or threat to use such violence, to intimidate or coerce a government, the public or any section of the public, in order to promote political, social or ideological objective - Example: Queen
A prime example of this was the attack that happened at the festival before the school year.

(2007) It is psychological, rational
Kill as many as possible and suddenly - innocent lives are a necessary sacrifice
Have a messianic & purifying element
Doctrinarian - anyone not with the ideal is to be destroyed
The population becomes emotionally captive to the aims of the terrorists and may force the primary target to surrender

*Obedience
Obeying a command to do extreme behaviour may be quite easy.
(Stanley Milgram found that 37/40 went all the way)

The experiment where one person asks the other person in a different room a question and if they answer wrong; they’ll receive an electric shock as a punishment and the voltage increases each time. But the person doesn’t know that they’re just hearing a recording and are encouraged to continue no matter what.

Young Offenders:
Juvenile delinquents act (1908 ) - separate court for youth; minimum age to be tried for criminal offence was 7.
Young offenders act (1984) - differences on cognitive development than adults meant different levels of accountability and responsibility; min. Age was 12.
Youth criminal justice act (2003): guidelines for extrajudicial measures (things that keep the youth away from the court, e.g warning) are provided.

Some young offenders can still be sentenced as adults. [ Daniel Williams, age:14]
Peculiarity: Ice Manipulation / Crime: Killed his little sister with an icicle impaled through her chest.
Youth Gangs: Identified by something (e.g. a name), seen as a distinct group, engaging in many delinquent activities.

Selection model: Bad people join gangs
Facilitation model: Gangs make people bad
Enhancement model: People join gangs for benefits

81 members of the gang “Grey King” are in the age range of 14 - 16
Grey King’s leader’s real name is unknown but is referred as Mono.

Group Robbery:
Robbery can be seen as an interpersonal behaviour
Dominance (controlling others) vs. submission (not likely in robbery)
Co-operation (making demands) vs. hostility (violence)
Commercial group robberies - more likely to have a weapon
Personal group robberies - more likely to involve violence and victim resistance

Serial Burglaries:
Entry behaviour ( e.g. side door, back door, window), items stolen, target type (townhouses, apartments, bogolos) & distance.
Among these four factors, inter-crime distance is the best indicator of both commercial and residential serial burglaries

Arson:
(2004)
Easy to perform, outcome =/= intent
Early idea: sexual frustration

(2004)
85% are male with an average age of 25-29
Unstable childhood, alcohol abuse, social relations & mental illness

189 cases (33% with (more than 1) >1 offenders)
Group participants were younger than the soloists (17.8 years vs. 34.6 years)35% could not report a motive
20% of cases, th motive was revenge/ hatred/ jealousy

(2003)
Young arsonist tend to have higher antisocial behaviour and hostility and lower assertiveness than other hospitalised disturbed kids
curiosity
Age 8-12: curiosity and psychiatric problems
Age 13-18: psychiatric problems, intentional acts, history of arson
61M + 5F arsonists from ages 6-17
Arsons were likely to be done by a group in public view [close to home]
Characteristics: living with parents (83%), under 16 (83%), school trouble (70%), no previous conviction (64%)

Domestic Assault:

Cycle of abuse: Tension-building phase > acute battering > conrite phase > back to step 1
The cycle does not occur in all abusive relationships.

Patriarchy: A cultural value of male dominance

Learning: Witnessed abuse between parents during childhood

Types of Male Batterers:
Psychopathic abusers - violent inside and outside the home
Overcontrolled men - can’t express emotions; explode suddenly
Emotionally volatile men - jealous; violent towards wife only

Elder Abuse:

[Local report from 2005-2010]
70% of the victims were female; as for offenders, 52% were females (some are nursing home workers) and 48% were male (family & friends)
Most common form is financial abuse

Child Maltreatment:

Maltreatment = Neglect/ failure to provide (30%), exposed to domestic violence (28%), physical (24%), emotional (15%) and sexual (3%)

Supreme Court: Physical punishment is legal [If done by parents on children between 3 and 12 without use of an object and without hitting the head of face.]

Female Offenders:

Like male, common mental illness include antisocial personality disorder and drug/ alcohol abuse. (8/10 have a substance abuse problem)

Female also have a high rate of borderline personality disorder

Forcible Confinement:

[Sadistic: Deven Mullins was starved, burned, beaten and found with multiple cuts on his body]
Devin Mullins, peculiarity: n/a
Paula Doyle, peculiarity: Resurrection
Interview notes: She admitted that when he died she’d used her peculiarity to resurrect him and continue.

Forcible confinement and kidnapping:
78% involved other violent actions
88% by intimate partner (98% victims were female)
20% by friend/ acquaintance (50% victims were male)
Others: break and enter incidents, etc (53% victims were female)

[Yousuke Hīru], charged with 5 counts of kidnapping and forcible confinement
Peculiarity: Madness Manipulation

Also known as The Hatter, one of those outside of the statistics. Abducted neither intimate partner or friend/ acquaintance. Mere strangers. On his file he said the reason behind his actions were that he wanted to cure his captives.

[Nen Koshuko aka Kinesthesia, The Exile Interrogator]
Peculiarity: 5 Sense Manipulation.
On multiple counts of kidnapping and forcible confinement. It was said that they would kidnap people and even torture them.

Mental Health:

Antisocial personality disorder: lack of remorse, irresponsible & deceitful

[2003] In a male sample, genetics explain 29-59% of levels of psychopathic components

Environment: being abused/neglected, uninvolved father for boys, a villain parent & low income

Disorders in young offenders:

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD): Sometimes not identified until school years
Conduct disorder: Violation against norms and others’ rights; 50% habe antisocial personality disorder in adulthood
Early onset of antisocial behaviour ~ serious and persistent antisocial behaviour later in life

A lot of behavioural issues that start during adolescence are only limited to that period

Pseudologia fantasia [2006]
Rarely researched
Excessive; not delusional [What does delusional mean?]; persistent from adolescence/ early adulthood; an end of itself, not a mean to an end; may enjoy attention or want to say something interesting; feel guilt, which leads to belief in own lies
Implication: They can trick the police and the court.

There has been several cases with individuals who falsely claimed to be diagnosed with a mental illness to lighten their sentence and charges which says something about them.
I am not saying that there aren’t villains and individuals who have a mental illness but there are those who’d take advantage, thankfully we have medical histories and psychiatrists.

Tests: 12.5% each

aggression]

#4: Group robberies, arson, female offenders, forcible confinement & mental health

Final assignment: 15%
