They promised him freedom to ambulate, and they delivered - Alois, in his flimsy hospital gown, was free to wander the perimeter of the hospital. In fact, so long as his trusty IV stand could maneuver in the area, he could meander into the courtyards where some of the other patients were out getting some sun. It fostered a needful change of scenery - the slate of rock, the vibrant green of grass, and the first hints of fall to touch the leaves on the carefully-chosen trees. In the center of the courtyard sprawled a crafted pond, hand rails preventing the slip of an errant patient, and a surfeit of benches upon which one could watch the donated koi.

He needed only to wait, he knew, as he settled against a bench in a secluded corner of the courtyard. The message sent that morning, despite with someone else’s cell phone, urged Thorne to bring the others to the hospital courtyard in the early afternoon. Thorne was the only one he knew of who may have ties to all the rest - and if not, then perhaps one of the others knew how to contact those missing. It was a small group, and thus an easily maneuverable one. He was the only member confined to the hospital grounds. If they could find time between work and other duties, they would come.

At least the bench and privacy trees offered plenty of sitting and standing room, he considered as an aside.
