Prompt
It has been seven long years since the Great Oban Invasion. It almost feels like a dream, considering all of the changes that have occurred in Tendaji since the great war. A new King sits on the Oban throne, and he has opened the boundaries of Oba and Matori. Many already are taking advantage of the open boarders to travel and explore. The world was expanding and changing all things to the massive war of the great nations.

Since the war, Tendaji took a stand against the extremist Alkidikes and won. They came together to show a new alliance that many could never dream of. Everything was settling, and now that there finally was peace everyone has begun to to take a moment and remember all that has come and gone.

How have the major wars and changes impacted your character these past few years? Are they bitter for their failures or happy about their success? Do they see a peaceful future to come or are they concerned about those who may be still holding grudges?

It was a rare moment when Aseara was given the day off. They’d had a large event the night before and Afsana had decided to give everyone the following day off to do whatever they pleased. Aseara knew she didn’t really have the day off, but with everyone being out of the Red Amaryllis and the place being large… There were little to no chances that even if Afsana tried to find her she would succeed. As long as she hurried with her chores she knew she could shave off a few hours and simply leave the confines of the RA to go with Nuri and spend some much needed quality time with him.

A quick stop in the kitchens was in order. Aseara grabbed a basket and blanket from their reserves before creeping in. It was unusually quiet and calm, so the Wind girl creeped in and took a few food items before stuffing them all into her basket and covering everything with the blanket. She’d also wanted some sort of alcoholic beverage; it would help release tense muscles, and grabbed a small bottle without reading the label before sneaking out through the merchant exit. No one would know she’d ever left.

Aseara left the city walls to a more remote location, one they’d decided upon and began to set up. She set out the blanket first, making sure there weren’t any bumps or anything before sitting down and putting the basket to the side. She didn’t want to eat without Nuri being here and so laid down on her back and stared up at the cloudless sky. Thankfully she’d picked a spot that was covered by a shadow and she wasn’t going to die out here in the heat, though shed have to be careful with the drink she’d brought along.

It was getting closer to the time he needed to leave, and Nuri was feeling a bit of the pressure of the time constraint. When he first arrived, it was easy to focus on his family and Aseara. Now, he needed to also prep for the trip, working with his peers during the day, visiting Aseara in his spare time, and making sure he paid attention to his family as well. At the end of the day, he was even more fatigued than when he was training.

However, today was special, and he made sure to put a little extra effort to get things done in advance. Aseara had warned him that she had time off, and requested he join her at their newest spot. With what little time they had left, he wasn't one to refuse.

As he left the city limits, he approached the spot to catch sight of Aseara. Her clothing, once more, was simple and her hair was down. He slowed his steps, hesitating and wondering if today he would breach the topic as to why. Why was she in this state, when before he left she was covered with gems and her hair done high? It wasn't as if he hated seeing it so simple and down, but he could tell something was off. Aseara would never dress this way without a reason.

Approaching the blanket, he quickly and silently joined her side and looked up to the sky. Pausing just a second, his hand darted out to take her own, content in the moment of just being there with her once more.

When Nuri joined her on the blanket, Aseara turned onto her side so she could snuggle up her body against his. The hand he’d grabbed stayed where it was but she draped her other arm across his chest and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek.

“Hi,” she said softly giving him a smile. Oh she was going to savor this moment so much. They hadn’t had this kind of intimacy in… Well ever. They’d never been this close as long as Aseara could remember and once he was back from his trip she was going to make sure they spent all the time in the world together.

“I feel like so much has happened and we’re still a long way from settling down.” So many wars, she’d practically been born during war, met Nuri during tight times, and had decided to finally stay here after the latest war. When were things ever going to settle down? She still had a long fight against Afsana ahead of her; things weren’t going to settle down any time soon for either of them. “I can’t wait to just relax and have kids and just not have to worry about war. Ever.”

The warmth that stained his cheeks upon her kiss was something Nuri worried would never go away. Always, whenever he touched her hand or expressed his love for her, his cheeks would warm and darken. It was such a simple love, and yet Nuri still wondered when it would become normal and his confidence in his expressions would grow.

Even her curling next to him, leaving his content and happy, was something that he felt his blush grow. He knew she was one of his best friends, greatest allies, and biggest confidant, but still he fumbled over such expressions. He may be one to fight in wars, but Aseara was the confident of the two.

Then again, such appreciations on her part did well to help him feel content and happy.

"Hi..." He softly responded, holding her a bit tighter and shifting so she may lay comfortably next to his side. He wished he had more time to simply lay beside her, ignoring the world around him. Unfortunately, such a thing may never be a reality.

As she spoke up, he brushed his hand through her hair, still marveling at the simple style that was so unlike her. Indeed, a lot had happened, but they were stable in their relationship all the same.

His gentle hum sounded, before his brain caught up to her statement. Kids?

Taking a deep breath of air, he moved softly to sit up and look down upon her, brushing a stray curl away from her cheek before echoing, "...kids?"

If she didn't notice his cheeks being stained with a darker color, she was bound to now.

The wind girl shifted and settled comfortably with Nuri and let out a gentle sigh of content. She would not change this very moment for anything in the world right now, she was right where she needed to be. When he got up and she saw his burning cheeks, she gently poke them.

Aseara wasn’t sure if Nuri’s reaction to the word kids was god or bad, so she decided to make light of the topic just in case he was taking it badly. She tried to pull him in closer for a kiss by grabbing his shirt and dragging him down on her so their lips could meet. She was kind of stalling though, what could she say? How could she explain? Surely they were well along in their relationship that they could speak of such topics like kids and their future together? Once the distraction was over though and Aseara did see his cheeks, she laughed.

“Yes kids, I would like kids,” she paused to try and gauge his reaction. “Would you like kids Nuri?” She was really hoping he would say yes. “And what are your thoughts on…” Oh did she breach this subject with him right now? “Well, I’d like to get married someday too.” She was really dropping some bombshells on him right now, especially right before leaving but she did want to know where they stood and where their future was headed. Marriage she could easily go without, but children? Aseara wanted some and this was something she would not put aside.

He didn't resist as she pulled down, and he let himself settle into the moment of feeling her lips on his own. Yes, she may be the initiator, but he was a willing participant in their displays of affection. When he pulled back, he sent her a frown as he saw her teasing laughter across her cheeks.

When she brought up the topic again, he couldn't help but divert his eyes as he pondered the thought. Kids. Little ones to run around that would look like the perfect mix of him and her. Yes, the idea did bring him a sense of pride, as well as a reminder of the days he raised his sister while his parents were away. It wasn't a terrifying thought, but it also wasn't what he was thinking of at that time.

Then, she brought up the topic of marriage.

"I...I'm not against the idea..." He said at last, although his parents jumped to the front of his mind and he knew they would be, "...but if we were to have children...I'd prefer to be here with you and to have you in a more...stable situation."

He supported her, and he hoped she understood, but with him about to leave on a trip and her dealing with Afsana, the idea wasn't one he'd focus on.

Her situation was unstable… Aseara greed to that even though it broke her heart all the same. She would not be able to bring children into this world if things stayed as they were, Afsana would never allow it. Even if Aseara had been in a good position she doubted very much Afsana would have let her have children let alone marry Nuri. Aseara hated the thought and found herself getting angrier and angrier, it wasn’t fair. Things were never fair with Afsana and it sucked. Aseara huffed once, lips tightened into a thin line as her mind worked over time.

“It’s not fair and she’s not going to get away with it.” She finally said. “Even if I wasn’t where I am right now Afsana wouldn’t allow me the freedom of getting married much less have children.” She admitted out loud not only to Nuri but also herself so she could feel the weight of the words. “It’s just not fair.” She truly sounded like a child at that moment but she didn’t care. Her mind was trying to work out a plan. “I’m going to start with the nobles, if they can back me up then I’ll have better sway. I also need to make it quick. How long will you be gone for again?” She wanted to make sure that when Nuri returned she was on top of things.

He moved in and initiated his own kiss, lightly on the tip of her lips so she could shift over if she wanted.

"Everything will work out...we will make sure it will." He whispered as he pulled back, before leaning back down and letting out another breath.

"I am not sure...maybe a year...I'll be going through Tale to Sauti and Zena." He remembered Sauti from the war, and turned to her with curiosity, "...I didn't get the chance to see Sauti during the battle...do you remember much of the area from when you were there before Afsana?"

His words were slow as he approached the topic...her past. It was innocent, but he was curious about what she might have to say. He knew the basics, about how Afsana saved her, but he didn't know from what or what her past was really like. Maybe today he would know.

Aseara pulled him into a much longer kiss than he had initiated, a much longer one before pulling back and grinning at Nuri like an idiot.

“I guess only time will tell.” She said before sighing softly her mind turning to another whole year without Nuri. That’s a long time she wanted to say, but didn’t. There was no use in saying such things. She’d survived one year she was able to survive another especially if her year was going to be as full as she thought it would be. She did wish he could stay though, to help her with the nobles and merchants, but she was an adult and she needed to act like one. Nuri wasn’t always going to be around to help her; she needed to fend for herself.

“I do.” As much as Aseara hated to embrace the idea, she did know Sauti very well. “I didn’t have a choice to, after my parents left for war and never came back I had to figure all the adult things by myself. “She was bitter about it and it probably showed in her voice. “So to survive I learned how to get around.”

He sighed, but decided it made more sense to move on with her words. She always was so closed and guarded about her past, but someday he knew he would learn her secrets. He could appreciate her shields, and he wasn't going to break them down if she wasn't ready.

"I was still young during the war, and my father was a merchant so he didn't fight. I grew up with the stories about how great Oba was, and how cheated we were...There never was talk about the so called wrongs of our nation, or the rights of those outside our door..."

"The me before I met you would have never imagined sitting here, speaking of children and marriage...I guess there is one thing I can thank from this war and Afsana, and that is that you are here now and I was able to meet you." It was so simple, but the smile he had was wistful all the same, "It is through you that I learned how to be understanding, and to look at the good outside of our borders...Oba has a lot to learn, but I hope I can be one of those to teach others through my travels so that we may protect our borders but also learn the truth outside of the sands..."

“We were all young, at least the people who are our age.” Too many orphans to count or keep track of. “I wish things had been different, that there would have been no war.” Perhaps Afsana would have found her anyways and she still would have found herself here and in Nuri’s arms. “There’s just so much fighting and nothing good ever comes out of it, ever.” It frustrated her, but Nuri didn’t know how deep the wound had cut. She wished she could open up to him, but every time her tongue got heavy and her heart ache and she wanted to shut down.

“My parents were killed by Obans and I was an orphan until Afsana found me.” Aseara suddenly blurted out as she turned away from Nuri. There, it was out in the open and that was that. She knew he’d be more confused about the whole thing than anything else but now it was said. Aseara closed her eyes and took in deep breaths, still so much to be said and so little time.

Nuri appreciated her thoughts, but deep down he knew there was no change for a world filled with peace. Too many nations fought hard against each other, or had views that contrasting. Even in hundreds of years, the nations would war with each other. It was a sad truth, but the driving factor as to why he wanted to fight. To protect himself, his nation, and those he cares about.

His eyes darted down to Aseara as she spoke of her history, and he pulled her close as soon as she turned away. It was a bit startling, but he had a feeling she had some sort of history with the Oban war.

"...You once yelled at me for looking at you as an outsider. At the time I was young a foolish, and only judged you by your pale hair and light skin. I didn't realize how strong you were, or how strong you would be."

He took a deep breath, and squeezed her shoulder lightly.

"When I saw the war, my parents continued to push me to become a solider...to avenge our nation for the shame our failure had caused. You've shown me that anyone can be part of a great nation, and that we are the ones who control our fate. I'm sorry about your parents, but I know you would most likely yell at me if I pitied you for being in Oba after all of that...you've become a strong Oban who inspires others to be the same" he brushed his lips against her forehead, "I don't expect you to tell me everything, but I appreciate you trusting me with your past."

Nuri did not know what it meant for him to tell her that she was strong. It was something she had wanted to hear for so long from anyone, something that her parents should have told her before they’d abandoned her. It brought tears to her eyes and her hand went up to gently cup Nuri’s face.

“I love you,” she said ever so softly. She didn’t want him to feel bad about any of it or think it was his fault.

“My father left first for the war,” she began recounting the night her parents fought. “Then a few nights later my mother was loading me into a cart full of children and telling me to behave and how I’d see her soon. The cart travelled around collecting children from parents who were leaving for war. Half of us were orphans before we even knew it. Half way through the journey any coin or keepers had was gone, too many of us and things really began to decline from there.” Aseara shivered at the thoughts of her past.

“All the equipment was used up fast with so many of us and we had to resort to scavenging to make sure everyone had a little something to eat. Thankfully the war ended and our keepers started taking us back, they were more than happy to get rid of us. They’d never been really friendly. The kids who had no parents were dropped off in villages so others could take care of them and that’s what happened to me. Our village was the last one they made it to and I was dropped off just like the rest.” This she was bitter about.

“Neighbors tried to help me out, I went back to my parents’ old camp and tried to make the best of it. Scrapped at the bottom for as many years as I can remember. A drunk neighbor taught me how to dance so I could bring in coin for both of us.” How Aseara hated those years, growing up without her parents. “Then Afsana found me and you know the rest.” The wind girl sighed. “And now I am back to scrapping the bottom.”

There was no time to respond to such a statement, as Aseara continued to speak. However it led Nuri to once more be reminded of his upbringing, of his past. His parents came to mind; how his father would disapprove and his mother would be distraught over the thought of him not settling with a nice oban. Sure, they could deal with him never marrying, but not with someone who would dirty his blood.

The thought, one he once would have shared, left him feeling slightly sick. So, he focused back on Aseara, his future, and what he wanted over what they demanded.

"This would explain how independent you've become..." He whispered softly, brushing her hair away, "But by no means do I see a little girl scrapping for survival. I see Aseara, a strong woman who is facing a challenge. I see an opportunity for you to finally control your life and make it what you will. Before, you were left in a situation thanks to the war, and Afsana blinded you with her promises and controlled you for her gain. Now, you have an advantage...you have a choice."

He leaned back, before smiling, "I believe that the Aseara I will see upon my return will be the strongest one yet, and I believe that, whatever happens, we will finally be able to talk about a future together once I'm done with this last journey."

Aseara gently cupped Nuri’s face as she smiled back at him. How could she have found someone so perfect? He understood her like no one else did, and he pushed her back up when she was down. He was also right and Aseara knew that she would have to act for her freedom and fight for her life. She was going to make sure this was the last fight for her life. She silently thanked the Oban gods before shifting and dragging Nuri down next to her again. She didn’t want to speak about this anymore; she didn’t want to spoil their moment together.

“I think when you return things will be quite different.” She didn’t know if she would accomplish everything before he returned, but she’d get it done. One way or another. “Let’s just enjoy this day together before you leave.” Aseara cuddled up close to him.
