Looking off for a moment, Starrine takes a moment before answering. "First, there is a difference between killing and murder. Just as self-defense is neither of those things. If one makes excuses for their behavior, it's probably wrong. Good and Evil is also different from good and bad and right and wrong. Good has many meanings depending on context. For instance, food can taste good. As to people... Just because a good person does something perceived as bad, it doesn't make them bad or evil. You're right. However, a bad person claiming to be good doesn't make them good either. If one does what is in their abilities to be a good person they can be. Evil comes from the darkest depths of our souls. One has to truly want to be evil in order to be. Warrior's protect others, it's never about hurting anyone. Murder, that's about power and control; that's about taking a life. You haven't seen evil until you've looked in someone's eyes and seen empty nothingness. I mean a dull void that nothing can fill. That is true evil." Now she turns from Mae to Cyrene. "When emotions change our entire Being ebbs and flows. Thus if we lie you can see it. Some can block others from reading them but they have to have the talent for it and have to be aware enough to block it. 'No one' ever guards themselves all of the time. The cocky, the arrogant, the self-righteous; none of them will because they won't believe anyone will look or be able to see their lies. We'll eat then get some sleep. I want all three of you to remember something. There is zero need to steal from now on. I will provide for you. If you don't like it, tough." She's looking directly at Mae on the stealing part. "It won't look good on Brother Nepha or the Sister's if you're stealing. The other thing is what he and I are doing is dangerous. All three of you can help; but you need to listen, if I say shut up it's for a reason, and for all that is holy I'm the only one killing this week." She believes she can handle it better mentally and emotionally than Nepha or the girls. Starrine never kills the innocent, and only kills for cause - like the man she burned earlier- but that doesn't mean it's any easier on her. The Demoness wouldn't wish it on the Priest or the young girls.

Cyrene and Euphrati nodded in agreement, while Mae replied, "You'll get no arguments from me." Of course she wasn't being very specific about what she was agreeing to. After a pause, Euphrati signed to Cyrene, "I wish that someone at my orphanage bothered to teach me important things. The only things that Mae and I learned are things that we taught ourselves." "That's the truth of it!" Mae quickly acknowledged, "All that they did was work us to death doing the same cleaning chores every day, which were pretty pointless because there was only so much we could do, and the place was still a pig sty. Every once in a while a priest would come from the Temple of Krysiss the Sea Goddess, and preach to us about Krysiss. Sometimes it sounded like he was talking about two different goddesses. On the one hand, Krysiss is kind and benevolent, but on the other, she can be a real b***h if you piss her off. Of course the priest didn't put it that way. I think he was supposed to be converting us, but he never acted like he wanted to be there. You know, that reminds me that a couple months ago, I was talking to a sailor, and he said that a sailor had two wives: the woman that he was married to in port and the sea. He also said that both were jealous of the other, and there was a very good chance that one of them was going to kill him. I'm still not sure I understand what he meant by that."

"I've heard,"
Cyrene signed, "That sometimes the sea waves get so big and rock the ships so much that the people get sick to their stomachs." "Yes, it's true that a lot of people get seasick, but I'm not one of them," Mae boldly declared, even though she had never set foot on a ship in her life. She then said, "Another thing that the sailor told me is that a sailor has a girl in every port. I think we all know what that means. So, I asked him if his wife knew about that, but he just smiled. Come to think of it, he never said if he was married or not. Maybe he was only married to the sea, as they say. Plus the girl in every port." Euphrati sighed in resignation and signed, "Mae, you are my best friend, and you always will be, but sometimes I think you talk too much." Instead of becoming offended by that observation, Mae grinned and replied, "It's a part of my charm." She then asked Starrine, "Hey, is your quest going to take you anywhere on a ship?"
