Landon paid little attention to Maria's matter-of-fact words as he flitted from one end of the counter to the next, staring eagerly at the menu. Of course, the Mexican had taken him to a Spanish restaurant, complete with sombreros, mariachi music, and flags from across the Spanish-speaking world. His sister had only explicitly told him not to order lobster; that didn't mean he couldn't order any other seafood items. Even if it was wrong to exploit a close relative, California intended to use this opportunity to the fullest. He had technically rightfully won it, after all. Once he had decided, Landon hailed a waitress, flashed her a Hollywood grin, and then sauntered back to the booth Maria had found for them. Plunking into the seat, he fiddled a bit with his tie to straighten it up and then leaned casually back against the cushioned seats, seeming as confident as if he ruled the world. "Ha, if that's so, why don't you invite me more often?" he teased her. "Want to avoid trouble? I bet you'd get away with more of these if you brought me along. I'm great at stealth!" he bragged. Granted, some of his movies had been filmed in such a way, but more of them were filmed on-set and required no stealth at all.
While Maria reviewed the menu, the waitress Landon had hailed earlier flounced over to their booth, her eyes twinkling. "Sir, ma'am, are you both ready to order?" she asked brightly, addressing the blonde since she recognized his face and he was unburdened by a menu.
Landon nodded easily, the smile never leaving his face. "I certainly am, miss!" he told her. "Your largest plate of tacos marinos, por favor!" The mere atmosphere of the place made it too easy for him to slip back into Spanish, and he completed the gesture by leveling a gun-hand at her and winking. The girl flushed and did not leave; though the reason was because Maria had yet to order, her irises kept straying back to California. "And what would you like, ma'am?" she asked again, toying with her notebook. ***

"Aw, come on, Maria," Landon pouted. "You're no fun. Whatever happened to living life?" Once the Mexican had ordered and voiced her concerns, he smirked. "Yeah, we're all fine here," he replied, pushing away from the booth wall. "We're still recovering from the recession, but we're getting there. Everything looks better when you're profiting from something you enjoy--and sometimes, learning how to do new things is fun in and of itself! I'm building more and more neuroscience buildings by the day; it's a growing field, and quite frankly, it's fun in more ways than watching those MRIs and PETs and CTs go." The Westerner grinned in memory and then returned his gaze to Maria. "Quit bein' such a mope. We're all here, right? Worst case, I and the rest of Spanish America are a river away. That's nothing to folks like us." ***

Landon frowned when he heard Maria confide her worries and leaned closer over their table. Something about her words fascinated and irritated him. So that was why she kept refusing his help; why she was always so cold to him? Something snapped inside him. "Thatβs why youβre so hard on us?β he asked. βBecause you thought that we didnβt care? That's not true at all!" the state retorted. "We didn't leave you willingly at first, or without a wordβat least, I didn't! Spainβs trade restrictions made it really hard for us to make money without trading with Europe and America, and with traders come settlers. And then, when you lost Texas to the Union, I was really worried that they would come for me and New Mexico and Arizona next! You rememberβmore and more of the people who moved into my house* were American and not Mexican or Californioβthey were weird, foreign! I kept waiting for you to swoop in and save us all from the Americans, but you were still smarting from losing Texas and worrying too loudly that you wouldn't be able to make good on your promise to throw them out of your land.** I had to rally my own Californios to fight, Maria, and I was never as good at fighting as you were, not back then at least! I hadn't expected to win,*** but when you lost too, Iβ¦ I don't knowβ¦" The Westerner sighed; this entire tirade was quite wearing to him. He had never told these secret thoughts to anyone beforeβnot even Mexico and especially not Mexico. "Maybeβ¦ you just didn't seem like a hero to me anymore. You weren't even strong enough to take Texas back. I guessβ¦ I just thought that maybe I could learn something good from Alfred and come back and help you develop like you did me. But by the time I knew enough to help you get strong enough to take us backβ¦ you were gone. I cried a little that day, I thinkβ¦ I didn't know whether you had given up on us for joining them. And then the wallβ¦ I couldn't find you on the other side..." Landon's voice shook a little as he admitted that, but noticing it, he shook his head and flung himself back into his seat, eyes blazing. "Why hadn't you said something before?!" he demandedβthough whether his anger was directed at Maria for what he perceived to be her desertion of him or at himself for having told all this to Maria was an open question. "You could have saved us both a lot of grief! All these years of building and film-making and more building and litigatingβ?!" The Californian's mouth worked for a little longer, but nothing came; and eventually, he seemed to sag a little against the seat with a heavier sigh. "We didn't silently abandon you," he mumbled. "None of us did. Get your facts straight, Mayoraβ¦"
While sulking, Landon had let slip his oldest nickname for Maria, the one he had given her when, as an infant colony, he had been unable to pronounce the words hermana mayor. ***

Out of San Francisco: *"Oregon Trail" days, **"saber-rattling", ***fleeing Californios; further reading Reading through all of those gave me the impression that Mexico was kind of a wimp... βΏ Consuela Luz Maria Rodriguez βΏ The Rebellious Sophomore
Luz Maria sat quietly as she listened to Landon. There were a few things she wasn't fully aware of, like how he and the others were waiting for her to save them and everything they had been through after she lost he battles. After all those defeats, her spirit was broken, she didn't want to admit that there was no way in hell she could be defeated by Alfred, but he was able to kick her butt, and that stung her pride. She had slight memories of her siblings being all sorts of cahoots, even after they left her house. Why exactly didn't she aid them? At these times, she would would've come running towards him, no matter where they were. perhaps when one's spirit is crushed, they pretty much ignore everything else that's going on. Well, that was over hundreds of years ago, what ever the reason, there was no excuse for what she had done. Rather, what she didn't do, and that's be a good sister.
Normally, she would lash out, saying that he was wrong. But all he said was true, she wasn't there when they needed her most due to her wallowing in her misery due to her losses to her neighbor. Looking downward, with her hands clenched and shaking, all she could say was "Lo siento.... I.... I was not a good hermana... I shouldn't have let those damn losses affect me, and should've helped you guys out. I may have lost you guys, but that doesn't mean we aren't family anymore... Damn.... Why did all that have to happen?" her voice was quivering, trying to hold back the tears "What kind of hermana makes her hermanitos cry?"

Landon had expected anything but the tears he was now greeted with. He averted his gaze from some abstract point on the table to her, watching in silent amazement as Maria unsuccessfully fought back the tears causing her voice to shake. The Mexican-American War had been a century and a half ago; did her losses back then really affect her so profoundly? Or had it been his perspective of the war that had done that? He extended his hand to her across the table, an unreadable look in his eyes. As many similar scenes as he had scripted, Landon did not entirely know himself what to say in this situation. βWellβ¦ Weβre all here, arenβt we?β he asked. βOr at least I am,β he added in an undertone. Where were Nevada and Texas and Florida? They might have been able to help him out here. But none of them were here, and so he plowed on, spouting whatever decent lines that occurred to his mind. βWhatβs done is done, and thereβs no reason why we canβt still get along now that we understand each other. Our wounds have been healed; perhaps itβs time you healed yours. Politically, I may be American now, butβ¦ Iβm still Spanish at heart, right? We all are. Itβs not as easy as you might have thought to forget oneβs roots. Youβre still our sister and protector; a few losses isnβt going to change that.β ***

Hearing that they're here right now made her look up with a sliver of hope. It's true, she'd be able to see her family while they are in school. They'll go their separate ways in the summer, but at least they'll go back to school and see each other again. She knew she shouldn't stay in the past, but it was a bit hard to ignore it when you're alone, it reminded her of her empty household. if she was going to be a good example, she would at least try to be the cheerful Mexican they knew. "Si, you're right. We're even in the same classes." she sniffled and wiped away her tears, while she took her brother's hand with her clean hand. Heck, maybe... Maybe if it weren't for her loss, her siblings may not be the people they are now. Heck, now they were able to learn how to be a little more independent, even though they were America's states "I am happy to hear that. But still, I wish I hadn't lost.... I do wonder though... What do you think our lives would've been like if we stayed the way we were back then?" It was something she had wondered. Would it been good or bad? Would things have been disastrous?

Landon beamed as Maria accepted his hand. βSee; isnβt smiling much better?β he teased. Suddenly, he was seized with an urge to hug her. And hug her he did. The Westerner hauled Mexico towards him into a tight, almost choking, bear hug before letting her go, clasping her shoulders with his usual bright-eyed grin, and sitting her back down. Only then did he sit down himself. βIβd ask if you wanted to go walk in the park, but we havenβt even eaten yet,β he noted. As Maria asked her last question, he tucked his chin in his hand, pondering. βWhat would our lives have beenβ¦β he repeated to himself. Hardly a second passed before Landon smiled, baring his meticulously-polished teeth again. βIsnβt that obvious? Weβd all still be Spanish! Your borders would cross into Americaβs, and you mightβve even rivaled Al in size and continental dominance, and weβd all be living in your house again, just like before! Butβ¦β Here, the happiness leeched out of Landon as he thought of the potential negatives. βThe cartels mightβve spread into Arizona and New Mexico and SoCal, or maybe Al wouldβve annexed us anyway to wipe them outβ¦ I donβt know if it wouldβve been better to stay,β he concluded with a sigh. βIf even I were still Mexican, youβd be a lot wealthier for it, but I canβt say whether whatβs happened is worse than what might have been.β
Right then, the waitress stopped in front of their booth, carrying two steaming plates. βSorry for the delay,β she apologized, setting down the plates. βI do hope you enjoy!β With that, she left. Landon watched her go for a moment before returning his gaze to Maria. βHeh, I guess even the restaurantβs decided that weβve been talking too deep. Enough with the heavy talk. Letβs eat!β With that, the state dove into his food. He had worked up quite the appetite during that little chat, but he was much happier now that he knew the cause of Mariaβs cold-shouldering. ***

βΏ Consuela Luz Maria Rodriguez βΏ The Rebellious Sophomore
So true, Spanish people were normally optimists who see the best in life even when times were dark. Luz Maria was caught by surprise when Landon gave her a big bear hug. And she thought the Spaniard's hugs were crushing. After a gasp of air, she said "Maybe tonight we can walk. it'll help burn the calories." No disrespect on him because he was an American. Perhaps in a way, all that's happened to her was inevitable, Alfred would've been a successful nation while she would be left behind in the dust. Well, at least she should be happy that her siblings are doing all right without her, after all, she couldn't take care of them forever. Fate sure is funny, huh? It's like no matter what, I was destined to lose you all. But, maybe it's for the best. You guys wouldn't be rich while staying with me. But just you wait, I'll catch up with you chicos, soon."
When the food arrived and was told to eat, it was something she could agree on "Si, let's do it." she said as she began to eat "You know, I feel a little better knowing the truth. Guess it is true what they say, mang, letting it out is good."
