Passion of Joan of Arc.
A silent film made in 1928 based on the actual trial of Joan of Arc.
I freakin' cried. Holy s**t. Never have I cried to a silent film. Never.
I was just watching it as it showed up on TCM, and wow. The acting, the direction, the film making, the soundtrack (which actually came out in 1995, and was playing during the movie), everything this film had was well put together. What gave me chills the most was the imagery presented, especially the torture scenes and when Joan was burned at the stake. Powerful, documentary-like imagery it presented in this film.
The story was based on a transcript of the trial of Joan of Arc, and basically the director made the film exactly like the trial in a documentary-like way. There were no changes for the sake of filming like most films these days. If you haven't heard the story, definitely look into it if you love European history. The story, I think, was what made me cry. Just the fact that a saint had been trialed for something the church didn't understand. Joan did not deserve that kind of injustice.
This has become another favorite film of all time for me.
