Avidian moved ahead, avoiding the places where the human scent was strongest. She knew that Daethian would follow, heard him moving through the snow pack behind her. She smiled. He would always follow her in the cold. She would always follow him in the heat.

Daethian looked up at Avidian and shook his head. She was lost in her thoughts and not paying much attention to where she was going. There was a new scent in the air, something that he didn't recognize at first. It took him a few paces to figure out what this familiar scent was. Green eyes widened in alarm. "Avi!" She was halfway through a hedge. "Don't!"

Avidian turned around to look at him, watch him as he began running the paces toward her. She took a step and there was nothing for her foot to land on. She slipped down a small slope and heard Daethian not far behind her.

The two pups tumbled into the clearing near the den and found themselves looking up at the other two wolves. Daethian had landed on Avidian, pinning her beneath his greater weight. "I told you 'don't'" He said softly.

Kamaria grinned at Taimi. "What's wrong with the tree-" She was cut off when two wolves tumbled into the clearing. Kamaria blinked at them. Then she said softly, "Hello."

Daethian looked up at the wolves, a grin crossing his features. "Err... heh heh." He got off of Avidian slowly "Hi."

Avidian hissed at him, silver eyes narrowing at the two.

"Hush." Daethian said softly. "Maybe they can help." He took a step toward them. "I'm Dae---ow!!"

Avi looked at him with her mouth wrapped around his tail. "How do we know we can trust them?" She asked, voice slightly muffled.

Kamaria watched the two silently, curling her tail neatly around her paws. She waited patiently for them to come to a decision, not at all afraid of the two pups. Kamaria knew that the wolves in the den would quickly be there to help should the two wolves prove to be hostile...But Kamaria got the feeling that they were not.

Taimi pricked her ears up and sniffed at the air. Two pups! All alone, too. They smelled very different...
Taimi wondered who they were but kept quiet, copying Kamaria's patient stance (though her tail wagged exuberantly before curling around her paws) and waited for the pups to speak first.

((Hey ya'll! :3 ))

Somewhere deep in the forests of the valley, a large, black male lay at the top of the small hill. He was taking a long deserved rest from all of the endless burdens being the alpha male carried. His fur protected him from the full two-feet of snow that layered the floor but didn't stop him from feeling any less wet. "Come on, Kali," he mumbled under his breath.

He was waiting for his mate to come back from the hunt. Usually at this time, he would be playing with the pups back at the den but his brother, Rawsawe, had that under control. While he always loved to tell them stories about adventures long passed, Naito was more of the 'let's play until mother gets home and has to deal with you' type. But this winter had brought many new challenges and, with them, very little time for him to sleep. Humans, as a constant bother to him throughout his life, were drawing closer; His uncle had informed him of that much before he died the previous year. They would be treading on his paws before he knew it.

'Great,' he thought, exaspirated, 'Now I'll have nightmares if I try to sleep.' Naito got up and shook off his coat. It had grown as long as his father's had been during the fall. Hopefully, it would shed during the spring. He padded back in the direction of the den, hoping to at least run into Kali before he had to deal with some new tragedy that had befallen the pack overnight.

Unlike his brother, Mei Kyoshu was out doing something more productive: guarding the territory with Hitone, his half-sister. He'd seen far worse winters than this but none were as eventful. The availability of food went up and down like a rabbit's running: frequent and unexpected changes that were usually for the worse. It had gotten so bad that he had had more than his fair share of hunting duty just in the past few suns. He charished his time up in the high country alone with Hitone more than ever.

But, even though he was a lone wolf at heart, he still had to have someone to talk to every once in awhile. "Do you smell that, Hitone?" he barked, barely raising his nose up into the air. He didn't have to: the same smell had been lingering over the outer reaches of the territory for an entire moon.

Hitone was almost ecstatic whenever her half brother talked to her. He was the only one she really looked up to after her parents had died. Sometimes, she pretended like he was her real father. That way, he couldn't disappoint her by dieing. Besides, Rawsawe told her that, if he did die, he would probably just come back. But that was just a rumor and Hitone had to get used to death some time. "Yeah, I do. It's fire: the same smell that's been here for at least a moon."

Mei smiled. "Good job. But could you smell the bear that was here the other night? Remember to not just smell the obvious. You have to look behind every smell that your nose picks up. Question everything. Let nothing rest without finding another answer." It was good advice and he hoped that she would take it to heart. If their father had, maybe they wouldn't have gotten into so many heart spots with that devil Blackheart. "We have to get back to the den. Kali and Tarenz should be back soon with the hunt and, by the way, you look like you need it."

((Rachlarn! Yay! It's like one big happy family again!))

Kali sighed and opened her jaws, dropping her half of the deer. She shook her head and walked away from the small pile of food still left. Now that the hunt, and her chance to get away from her responsibilities for a time, was over, Kali could feel the worry she had been avoiding crash down on her again.

((Hrmm...I should go do my homework now. Yay...Homework over Christmas break. confused ))

Daethian looked back at Avidian with a sigh. "Avi..."

"Don't 'Avi' me, you arrogant thing." She snapped, bitting down harder on his tail before letting go. "How can you just waltz up to them like that?" She hissed, watching the two who were waiting.

"They're wolves, Avi!" He snapped, turning to face her. "They can help us!" Daethian spun from her and dashed further into the clearing. He skidded in a patch of ice and ended sprawled in front of the two older wolves. He grinned sheepishly as he climbed to his feet. "Heh heh..." He laughed softly. "Sorry." He glanced back at Avi.

Avidian looked at him with a glare of the upmost loathing before following slowly, keeping herself as low to the ground as possible. She didn't have to like it, but she wouldn't leave him in potential danger.

"I'm Daethian." He said softly, turning back to the two strangers. "Sorry to uh... fall in on you like this but..." He trailed off, shrugging his shoulders. He scratched at the collar, the emerald sparkling in the light. "The little one behind me is Avidian. She doesn't trust anyone." He smiled up at them.

Kamaria blinked. She smiled slightly and said, "I'm Kamaria. It's nice to meet you Daethian, Avidian." The wolf nodded to each as she said their name. She paused and then added, "How can we help you?"

Nyra padded out of the den. She smiled when she saw the snow that blanketed the ground and the sun that peeked through the clouds. Her wings itched to unfural themselves and feel the wind beneath them. Her smile grew even wider as she realized it was a windy day; good for flying. Nyra stretched opened her silver-tinged wings. With a strong downstroke, she hovered above the ground. A second downstroke sent her lingering a few tail-lengths above the ground. Finally, a third sent her flying through the air.

Daethian smiled up at Kamaria. "I'm not really sure. Perhaps you can tell us where we are?" He asked hopefully.

Avidian moved up slowly behind Daethian, gray eyes locked on Kamaria. The snow felt good under her paws, though she knew Daethian had to be freezing. He hid it well, she noted with a smile. Then she remembered she was in the presence of strangers. Big strangers.

Daethian looked back at Avi. "I don't think they are going to hurt us. They would have done so already." He said softly.

"Just because they haven't yet, doesn't mean they aren't going to." She snapped back, coming to rest directly behind him. "It's like saying 'Just because the human is hurting you know, he isn't going to." She scratched at the silver collar. The links left on it jingled.

Daethian raised his head, the emerald set in the collar sparkling a vibrant green. His eyes matched. "True enough... But they aren't human. They are wolf."

Avi snorted. "Sometimes, there isn't much difference."

Taimi's stomach suddenly gave a very loud rumble. She looked up at Kamaria apologetically.
"Excuse me, I think I'm going to go and hunt something. Perhaps there's still a rabbit around here somewhere."
The small wolf stood and stretched her limbs.
"You're in the terrain of the Athalii wolf pack," she said to Daethian and Avidian. "Nice to meet the two of you, and if you'd like to stay with the pack for any amount of time, I could ask our alpha if I come across him at all."

Kamaria nodded to Taimi. "Good luck," she murmured to the wolf. Then she looked back at the newcomers. "Well, you are welcome to stay until then, of course. You should be safe here, in the clearing, or in the den. Food is over that way," Kamaria pointed to the fresh-kill pile, though it was somewhat small due to the season.

((Wow, it has been a very long time. Here goes...))

Taimi nodded and trotted off through the snow, headed for one of the usual places rabbits could be found. She paused occasionally to sniff the cold ground or rub her side against the frosty bark of a pine in hopes of finding some trace of living meat. However, the snow carried no fresh scent, and the trees still drowsed too deeply to take much notice of her thoughts, let alone the flickering movements of short-lived things.
Sighing to herself, Taimi moved away from the unused run and headed for another.
This is going to be a very long winter, she thought.
