Yeah Slipknot and Mudvayne are what the media has coined 'nu-metal' which was the media's way of being stupid.
Being heavy rock-like music =/ metal.
The nu-metal genre is really just another name for alternate rock.
Mostly it utilizes
elements from hip-hop.
In order to be metal your music has to fit in a certain musical structure.
'Heavy' metal was the first type of metal to appear and as such serves a dual meaning. It can refer to the genre of metal that was first created at that time (metal has since 'evolved' to create different genre that have the same musical structure but have differences. Ex. divergent evolution). Or as metal as a whole (instead of calling it just 'metal.') It's confusing though to people who actually know their genres. "Oh! Wintersun is great heavy metal!" People would call you an idiot.
rofl I'm really picky about since many so-called 'metalheads' actually only listen to like three metal bands, which are mostly heavy metal bands, like Pantera. Not to mention what a bad rep 'death metal' gets. Hardly anyone who says they hate it has actually listened to it.
Yeah...you would get along very well with one of my friends. xD
He's got a list out the a** of different metal bands. And I am talking about real metal.
I do like some metal, but I'm kind of iffy on a lot of stuff. I like clean vocals, and it's usually extremely hard to understand what they're saying.
I'm really liking a lot of the industrial music I've been hearing recently, I just need more bands to check out. So far I've heard, Skinny Puppy, Spine Shank (which I think is more alt. rock), KMFDM, Gothminister, and a few others.
And Dragoon, the explanation Dethei's given is NOTHING compared to what my friend has gone into before, and he's not even getting into most of the stuff he could, because I always cut him off.
