Octover the 31st, All Hallows Eve, or Halloween as we commonly know it. That's right, once again the spirits will stalk aour streets constantly hounding us for treats for our souls to be spared from their tricks in return. One of the only nights of the year that is truly unique in its character. And guess what, I can't wait.
Halloween is normally seen in the negative, so much in fact people rarely answer there doors anymore. Last year I had to take my sister trick-or-treating, we didnt get much. People just don't answer their doors - "its practically begging" they say. It's a celebration like others, it's more than just trick or treat, its to honour the departed as they pass into the afterlife, trick or treating is just the popular side of it.
What I don't like Halloween is that it's one of the most commercial nights of the year. The companies will build and build and hype and hype Halloween as some ultimate-mega event and sell their product as the ESSENTIAL Halloween item. It really gets on my nerves. Halloween is NOT about costumes and candy (although at least in the UK we actually stick to the trend and dress scary rather than the Americans who will go dressed as fairies and bumblebees and spiderman -wtf?).
So on Halloween, I will not be trick-or-treating. Whilst I will be actually answering my door and giving the little kids sweets (I mean, why not?), I will also be honouring the people who are dead, the people who are still alive, and my friends both in this life and in others.
That's the true meaning of Halloween. Spread.
