Old Nick's bellowing could be heard as far away as the waterfall where the two unicorns liked to spend time. Chael and Angeni looked at each other, curious and concerned.
"Uh oh, something's upset Old Nick. I've never heard him so angry!" said Chael.
"He'sssss sssssurely worked up over sssssomething," agreed Yss.
"Well, I think he was yelling about someone taking something of his," Angeni added. "Whoever it was had better return Old Nick's property or we'll all pay for it big time."
"Maybe we should go find some of the other creatures to see if anyone knows more about this. You are right, Angeni, there will be big problems if Old Nick stays this upset," ventured Chael.
Neveah just fluttered around, too nervous to alight on anything.

Chael and Angeni pondered what to do. They had headed in the direction of the commotion and come upon a scene of worried creatures. From some of the chatter they discovered why Old Nick was so angry.
"Many of the others are trying to figure out who stole Old Nick''s belongings. Maybe we should help," suggested Angeni.
"Well let''s start by examining the surrounds of the store, then we could ask the others if they know anything," agreed Chael.

Chael and Angeni started by lowering their heads to the ground and looking for clues. This proved more difficult than it first seemed, as they found themselves bumping into other creatures who were doing the same thing. Looking so carefully at the ground in front of them, it was hard to keep track of what was around them. It was a slow process to circle the area of the store. Having considered going different ways and meeting at the other side, they decided instead to go side by side to cover a larger area.
Meanwhile Yss the snake tried to keep out of the way, figuring his sliding manner could quite possibly disturb evidence and make the whole quest more difficult.

Angeni's companion, Neveah the butterfly, flew up into the tangled branches above the store. Seeing as everyone was searching the ground, she figured that perhaps someone ought to check the treetops for clues also. Fluttering higher and higher, she scanned each of the branches for anything out of place.

Having completed their scan of the surrounding forest floor, Chael and Angeni stop to ponder what to do next.
"Hmm, who should we talk to first, do you think?" Chael asked Angeni.
"Let's try those three chirras, they look friendly and they are chatting, so maybe they are talking about what happened." Angeni looked off to the left where the chirras were gathered.
"Sounds like a good way to start," agreed Chael, glad that Angeni had not suggested entering the store and talking to Old Nick.
So the two unicorns approached the chirras nearby.
"Excuse me, pleased to meet you, but we were wondering if you saw who took Old Nick's belongings?" Angeni ventured.

"Ah, thanks for your help," said Chael uncertainly, as he was unsure if they were actually trying to help or if indeed they were helpful. He edged away, partly since the chirras were ignoring him and partly because he thought they might just stay there arguing for the rest of the day.
Angeni took her leave of the chirras also, glancing at Chael but waiting to speak until they got a good distance away. "Hmm, what do you make of that?" she asked Chael.
Chael looked thoughtful, then said "Well it's hard to say if we can assume whoever took Old Nick's things was a female, or if he just had a visitor last night. Or then again maybe the chirras are just a bit nuts and imagined the whole thing."
"Yes, well to eliminate the possibility of Old Nick having female company, we'd have to ask him. I'm not quite sure if that's a good idea." Angeni looked worried.
"Hmm, tricky indeed," agreed Chael. He thought for a bit then came up with a suggestion. "Maybe we could hedge around the question by asking a different question, a more broad question, such as 'Can you list who has been in your store in the last day?' Then we aren't sounding like we are checking up on his personal life or gossiping."
Angeni giggled. "Brilliant, I say we go with it." And she swung around in the direction of the store, hinting at Chael to go along too.
When they got over there they decided the doorway looked a bit of a tight squeeze, even for Angeni, who was smaller than Chael. So Angeni poked her head in, coughed politely and said "Um, excuse us please Old Nick, but we are trying to solve the mystery of your missing items. And we just wondered if you could tell us which woods creatures have have visited your store in the last day or so?" She held her breath, hoping he would realise they were attempting to help and not be nosy..
