I heart Epee! I think alot people think it's easy because you can hit where ever and there's no right-of-way, but they're wrong! I tried to fence foil once and I DIED...horribly.

I'm not too comfortable with foil... though I believe I'm TA for our foil class at my University...

The problem with not having right of way (and why epee is difficult) is the double touches. You have to be ahead to win... and well... that is easier said than done at times. I've fenced epee in one tournament... not my best, though i did beat one of the kids that flew all the way from florida in order to compete. It was over time, I had the flip for advantage. We wasted no time, straigt advance lunges from both of us SMACK SMACK!!!! Face to face with my opponent and... ONE LIGHT FOR ME!! Granted my team still lost to these guys... but I have bragging rights! ^.^

I still trust my sabre much more than the other weapons though. ^.^

The other day, My friend Britt (Saber) and I were at our pep rally, looking at all the other sports teams. (Fencing isn't *quite* a sport at our school yet. Damn them.) We reckon that the foilists would take down the golf team (Possibly), the epeeists would take down the fottball players and the cheerleaders and the saberists would...take down anything in their paths.

xd The common joke at our school, when commenting on other sports, is 'send the Sabeurists first, we'll stab what's left standing... or poke what's on the floor!'

The foilists could definately take down the golf team. I mean, those clubs are quick but they can't really defend against a good running attack...

I love epee.. my team is hilarious though. One of the graduates came back and our coach was telling her how "the girls epee team is a nice bunch of young ladies." and this girl just frankly said, "you're going to lose." I had a meet today and I lost to the same girl I lost a DE to last year... gah!

ive done all three diciplines, and epee is definitely the most fun. so ya alot of people claim that its easy because you can hit anywhere, but the club i fence with has some interesting rules to make it a little harder.

granted a foilist or sabreist is going to fight like their decipline regardless, its amusing to see me fight sabre like an epee, but the special rule for epee fights in the club is they only permit hand, toe, and head shots as a valid target, and for good reason.

they claim (and i can back up the claim) that it promotes better tip control, better tip awareness, and quicker reaction time.

but ya, little mini rant, epee is the best hands down.....i like my italian grip epee lol

I've fenced for almost three years now, and my coach has this huge thing against pistol grips. I personally LOVE pistol grips for the contol they give you, and how light they are, but he claims you get the really strength in french and italian grips. Which one really allows you to get the best wrist control without weighing you down? I need it fast, junior olympics is coming up!

a french grip and an italian grip are pretty much the same, the only difference is italian grips have those 2 metal loops right below the bellguard, those allow you to wrap your fingers around them giving you more control and stability, much like a pistol grip, i prefer them for that reason because i like the control of pistol but hate how fast my hand fatigues.....you will build up your wrist equally if you use french or Italian, but if you like the control of your pistol grip alot i would suggest italian. if you want more info pm me and ill give you a link to where i got my italian grips at

I have only ever done epee. sad The place I go doesn't teach sabre at all and barely teaches foil. But I think there is another fencing academy nearby, so I want to check that out.
