Arrival

Riordan had been thrilled to recieve the phone call stating that he had been granted custody of one of the children at one of the places he'd sent in an application to. He'd been trying for a few weeks to get a child, but had almost given up hope before finally spotting this one and deciding to try one last time.

So the man was thrilled beyond everything to have recieved this call and rushed over right away to pick up the boy. The man had even picked out names for children, just in case they had not been named yet. This little boy hadn't, so the male name of Reese Cole was given to him.

Though, Reese was a bit odd. First of all, he apparently had something called 'Magikarp' DNA. Riordan thought it must be some sort of fish. But the man took his new son home.

First thing he discovered, was that this boy was a bit slow. Mentally slow. The child fell down the stairs several times before Riordan rushed out to get a baby gate installed up.

Riordan figured he would redesign the boy's room later, but would first let the kid settle in before doing much else.

"Reese, meet your.... uncle..."

"This is the letter A, Reese. A makes an 'aah' sound." Riordan was sitting at the kitchen table with the boy, holding up a flashcard with a large block letter written upon it. "Can you say A, Reese?"

The boy was pushing at the man's hand that was holding the piece of paper before his face. "Eehh..." He whined, squirming in his chair.

"A. Aah."

"Eehh!" Reese grunted, trying to escape for about the thousandth time. Riordan's hand, the one not holding the flash card, was holding the boy firmly in his seat.

"Reese, you have to try." Riordan sighed. The boy was behind in school, even though the man worked with him. Riordan put the flashcard down. "How about we sing the ABC's?" He asked in a forced cheerful voice.

"No!"

"A, B, C, D..." Riordan started singing, ignoring the boy's outburst.

"No!" Reese was struggling, but couldn't free himself from his father's grasp.

The sound of the front door being unlocked and then opened halted Riordan's song. "Who could that-" The man started to wonder, and then was interrupted.

"'Dan?"

The questioning voice was one so familiar to Riordan and he jumped, flying out of the kitchen to make his way over the baby gate and down the stairs, right into the arms of the man who'd just closed the door and put down his luggage. "Kade! You're home early! I thought you were going to be away until Christmas..."

Kaden smiled, hugging his partner back. "The trip ended early. I'm glad to be... home..." The man paused a bit on the last word, having looked around a bit and saw a few changes. Namely, the baby gate at the top of the stairs was what had caught his attention. "Uh, 'Dan...?"

Riordan blushed a bit, but tugged at the other man's hand. "Come, come. There's someone who you need to meet." He led Kaden up the stairs, moving the baby gate and entering into the kitchen.

Having been confused by the sudden freedom that Riordan had given him, Reese had not moved from his seat at the table. Why had Daddy run off like that? Was Daddy mad at him for not wanting to sing?

Kaden's brown eyes fell upon the strange looking boy sitting at the table. "'Dan..." he said, sternly. "We never talked about this..."

At the sound of a strange voice, Reese looked up, spotting Riordan. "'Da!" He cried, gleefully, as though he'd forgotten their previous battle. The boy slid out of his chair and ran over to cling to Riordan's legs. Reese then spotted Kaden and hid his face. "'Oo dat?"

Riordan smiled. "Reese, meet your... uncle..." He ignored the look that Kaden gave him. "Uncle's going to be staying with us now, okay?"

Reese peered out for a moment to study Kaden. After a few silent moments of study, the boy grinned. "Unc!" He stated, grinning up at the man.

Kaden looked down at the boy, then looked over at Riordan. "We need to talk." He stated, his expression a bit hard to read.

"Okay, Reese. Bed time!" Riordan stated, quickly snagging the boy before he darted off somewhere.

"Noo!" The boy squirmed, uselessly, in his father's arms. Kaden watched the two struggle for a moment, then turned to collect his luggage from the entryway.

Riordan quickly tired of trying to fight with Reese and picked the child up and carried him to the boy's bedroom. Riordan set Reese down and closed the door, maintaining a firm grip on the boy's arm. "Reese, it's bed time."

"No!" The boy frowned. He wanted to play.

Riordan sighed and tugged the boy over to his bed. He handed Reese the stuffed fish toy (it was a stuffed Nemo that Reese had fallen in love with at the store) on the bed and pulled down the sheets. "In you go." He hefted the boy into bed and pulled the sheets up over him. "If you stay still, I'll read you a story."

"'Tory?" Reese paused in his escape attempt and his father took the opportunity to nab a book from the shelf nearby.

"Yes, a story." He held up the copy of the Little Engine That Could. "The Little Engine That Could," Riordan read, opening the book.

"Da'?" Reese interrupted.

Riordan lowered the book. "Yes?"

"Unc' nice?" The boy asked, holding his toy close to his chest.

Riordan smiled and closed the book, setting it aside. "Yes, Reese. Your uncle is very nice. He and Daddy are close friends."

The boy frowned. But Uncle hadn't said anything to him. "Unc' no like Ree'?"

Reese's father quickly shook his head. "No, no, Reese. Uncle likes you. He's just tired from his long trip and needs some sleep. I'm sure he'd love to play with you tomorrow, though."

"'Ure?"

"Yes, I'm sure. You'll love Uncle, you just have to let him get some sleep first. And you need sleep, too. It wouldn't be good if Uncle was ready to play tomorrow, but you were too sleepy to." Riordan warned the boy.

"O'tay." The boy rolled onto his side and cuddled the fish closer.

Riordan smiled, leaning over to kiss the boy lightly on his forehead. "Night, Reese."

"Ni'h', Da'." Reese replied as Riordan flipped off the light and closed the door behind him.

Kaden had moved his luggage into his and Riordan's room while the other man was occupied with putting the child to bed. The older man had started unpacking to give himself something to do. It was better than pacing the floor while waiting for his lover to return. His mind was racing over what to say.

Riordan entered and began helping put away some of the belongings. "What the ******** were you thinking, Rio? We never talked about adopting! I'm gone overseas for business and I come back to find a kid living here! What the hell?" Kaden pretty much exploded at his partner. He'd been anticipating coming home to spend time with his lover, not to find some little kid running all over the house.

Riordan closed the bedroom door. "Kade... There was an ad in the paper. And, well, I figured I might as well see if we could get on the list. It was more out of curiousity. But then, when I got there, this pink-haired woman shoved Reese into my arms. I couldn't say no! The poor kid needs a loving home. He's... well, he's not exactly the brightest kid. I'm sure he wasn't getting the attention he needed there..."

"So you just took him? ********, 'Dan. Did you even stop to think that there might be a reason this woman just gave him away? Hell, look at the boy, Rio. The boy has fins!" Kaden nearly shouted the last sentence.

"I know that perfectly well, Kade. Could you please keep your voice down? And stop with the cussing? He's not deaf." Riordan retorted calmly. Kaden rubbed his forehead for a moment. Riordan held his breath for a second. "We can't exactly send him back," Rio added.

"I know, I know. It's just... unexpected." Kade stated. "We'd never talked about adoption, at least not in great detail and then you suddenly spring this child on me..."

"Reese likes you. He was talking about you, wanting to know what you liked." Though it may've been a ruse to stay up longer, Riordan added to himself, mentally. "Anyways, he's asleep and I haven't seen you for so long..." Riordan grinned at his lover and wrapped his arms about Kaden's waist. The older man started to say something, but gave in and the two kissed, which led on to other things...

Afterwards, the two men were curled up on the bed, Kaden's arms about Riordan. "So... why do I have to be Uncle?" Kaden teased Riordan, gently caressing his lover's cheek.

"Because I'm already Daddy," was the reply. "Don't want to confuse the poor boy more than he can handle," Riordan added. "It took him a while to get used to me."

Kaden seemed to be slowly growing used to the whole idea of being a parent. "Besides," Riordan continued, "not many places allow couples like us to adopt. And here this woman literally shoved the boy into my arms."

"That's true..." The older man slowly admitted.

"Besides, perhaps you could help him learn his alphabet." Riordan blushed. "You're the teacher, after all."

Kaden glared at his partner, whose head was resting on his shoulder. "Professor. I'm a professor." It was a ongoing joke between the two of them. "I teach college students, not toddlers."

Riordan smiled teasingly at his partner. "I know, but you are good at teaching. Maybe you can figure out some way to encourage him to learn. I've tried just about everything I can think of."

"I'm not used to teaching special ed, 'Dan. Don't expect any miracles..."

"So you'll at least try?" Riordan's tone was hopeful.

Kaden sighed, trapped. "Yes... But don't expect him to learn it all in one day!"

Letter to Alpha

Letter
Dear Alpha,

As you have requested, I am writing to you about Reese Cole. Reese has been struggling with his schoolwork and seems to have problems learning in pace with the other students. Tasks lose his attention after a while and he's moving on to something different after only a few minutes. He is still having problems picking up on things quickly, though he is getting better at talking. Though, most of his words end up getting cut short and usually only the first syllable is actually said. But it’s better than nothing, I suppose.

Reese doesn’t seem to be the adventurous type. He’s quite content to sit in the floor and play. For a while, and then he’ll get up and have to do something else. Books have to be short or he loses attention in the middle of them. Working on his schoolwork with him is difficult because he doesn’t like to have to sit there for that long and do it. I try breaking it up some for him, at least.

The boy has a fascination with puddles. Any time he spills juice on the table he has to slap it with his hands. Baths are chaos as he just hits the water’s surface over and over, ending up with half of the bathwater outside of the tub by the end of it. The entire bathroom is a war zone when Reese is taking a bath. I’ve gotten to where I just wear some shorts whenever I’m washing him, because I end up soaked by the end of the whole ordeal as well. Reese, however, thinks its fun and enjoys the entire ordeal.

He’s not only obsessed with cars and trains like any other boy, but also with sea animals, especially fish. Finding Nemo is like his favorite movie of all time. I swear that I could quote the entire thing to you from memory… Reese loves watching it over and over again. I’ve found it to be an effective bribing tool. Just mentioning the movie often gets his attention. His favorite character is Nemo, of course. He even has this stuffed plushie of the clown fish that he had to have. Of course, he can hardly sit and watch all of it at once, so usually I end up pausing it to do a bit of homework with him before finishing the movie.

My boyfriend, Kaden Williams, recently returned from a business trip. He took one look at Reese’s wardrobe and decided to take the boy shopping. I’m glad I decided not to go along. Kaden came back, rather irritated, and vowed never to take Reese shopping with him again. I chuckled, remembering my trip with the boy when I’d first gotten him for a baby gate. Kaden said that the first thing Reese spotted when they went into the store was this frilly pink dress. And the boy went right to it and looked at it. Kaden tried pulling Reese away to go look at boy’s clothing, but the boy threw a fit. Apparently, he wanted this pink dress. Kaden tried explaining that it was a girl’s outfit, but the kid just didn’t understand it. At this point, I was rather appalled, figuring that Kaden had given in and actually bought the boy a dress! Luckily, Kaden finally left Reese looking at the dress and went and found a Nemo shirt, having discovered the boy’s fascination with the clown fish. That struck a note with Reese and Kaden used it to lure the boy over to the children’s section that actually had boy’s clothing.

Kaden ended up buying several cute outfits for Reese. I didn’t know he had it in him. He seemed so reluctant to being a parent when he first came home. Reese, though, loves his ‘Uncle’ and is happy to have someone else in the house.
I’m a bit concerned about Reese’s problem with keeping up at school. Preschool’s been tough enough for him and kindergarten will just be even worse. I’m wondering if I should hold him back to try and get him caught up before moving on or if he should go to a special school. Special schooling could be expensive, though. But I know it would be better for him in the long run.

Riordan looked over the letter one last time, then sealed it in and envelope and mailed it off.

Homeschooling

Kaden sighed as he started to get everything ready for Reese. Why had he agreed to homeschool the boy? He and Riordan had talked a lot lately about Reese and the poor boy was having enough problems keeping up in preschool. They were afraid he'd fall farther behind in kindergarden. The two men had debated holding the kid back a year and have him go through preschool again, but Riordan had wanted to homeschool Reese.

The two men had researched homeschooling before making their decision and found that it was easy to set up if the parent teaching had a degree. Which made Riordan start begging Kaden constantly to agree to homeschooling, since he was a professor. Of course, Kaden had argued back that he was used to teaching college students, not special education. Plus, how was he going to make money if he sat here at home all of the time?

Kaden sighed. He now worked nights, teaching a couple of evening classes at the university to make money. And Riordan continued to sell things on eBay as well. They were doing okay, though not living as comfortably as they had been before. But Reese seemed happier this way, and that made all the difference to the two men.

Kaden had continued to do a lot of research on homeschooling, especially in special needs cases, and had gotten several ideas. Now, they were all settling into a routine. Reese would wake up and have breakfast while Kaden set up a lesson in the living room. They'd have a short lesson, then break for a bit for a snack. Then another lesson with another little break. One more lesson, and then the whole family would have lunch. After lunch, Reese would have a nap, then would have another lesson before finally being done for the day with his schooling.

The man had also found a way to help keep Reese's attention focused. There was now a chart hanging up on the fridge. Every time that Reese behaved himself during one of his lessons, he got to put a star sticker on the sheet. Once the ten squares on the sheet were filled, Reese would get a fish. The first couple of days, it had been a good day if Reese got to put one sticker on the chart. Now, he was starting to do better and usually got to put two stars on the sheet.

Currently, Kaden was working with the boy on his alphabet, numbers, speech, and colors. Each was one of the lessons for the day and occasionally, the lesson would change to something else, depending on what happened. Occasionally, if Reese had a good week, he got rewarded with a field trip one day instead of lessons. The last field trip had been to the aquarium. Kaden was hoping that maybe a trip to the library could be next on the list.

Kaden glanced at the clock. It was almost time for their first lesson for the day, which meant that Reese was almost done with his breakfast. Riordan had taken over the household chores, Kaden's barganing chip in the whole situation. The man made all of the meals for the family. Riordan also took care of Reese once Kaden left for work, giving the boy his bath and putting him to sleep at night. While Kaden and Reese were busy with a lesson, Riordan got time to work on eBay. It had taken a little while for them all to get used to the routine, but now even Reese was starting to get used to it.

In fact, the boy was running into the living room right then. Kaden smiled at the boy and Reese took a seat on the floor while the man gestured to the large printed letter on a piece of posterboard that was propped up on a chair. "Today's letter, Reese, is the letter J. Let's sing the alphabet song with the letters we've done." He picked up the stack of posterboard with the letters cut out, prompting Reese to start singing.

"Aaay... Beee... Ceee...." Reese slowly sang as Kaden flipped through the large flash cards. "Dee.... Eeee........ Efff... Geee...." The boy paused at the next one, thinking hard. Kaden remained silent, watching the boy. "H'ach!" Reese grinned as Kaden nodded, then looked at the next card and frowned.

After a few moments, Kaden pointed at the letter. "I. This is the letter I, Reese."

"Eyee!" The boy repeated, then looked at the letter for the day.

"And this is the letter J."

"Jayee!"

Kaden nodded. "Now let's sing our song again." He held up the first letter.

"Aaay... Beee... Cee.... Dee..." Reese sang again. "Eeee..... Efff.......... Geeee..... H'ach............ Eyeee!" He smiled happily as Kaden nodded and pointed to their current letter. "J-j-...." The boy frowned.

"J."

"Jayee!"

Riordan peeked in from the kitchen and smiled at his little family. Kaden was working wondering with Reese. When he'd been trying to teach the boy, Reese had hated it and fought with him over trying to learn. But Kaden was making it somewhat enjoyable at least for the magikarp boy and Reese was making much better progress. He was glad he'd been able to talk the man into doing this.

Okay, so it was bad enough that Riordan found Reese while I was gone and adopted him without even asking me. That wasn't too bad, I don't guess. But the other day, this guy came to the house about us adopting a kid. Now, I wasn't exactly for it, considering the fact that Reese is enough, but 'Dan fell in love with this boy. He's such a softie.

Anyways, so I got the wonderful job of explaining to Reese what was going to be happening. Yeah... that didn't go over very well. It took me a few minutes to explain to where Reese understood that this boy wouldn't just be coming over, but staying here. In fact, living here for a very long time. I had to resort to using stuffed animals, but that's a different story.

Reese isn't happy about this whole idea, but I'm hoping that he gathered that he'll still be living here and be loved and all. I tried to make that clear, but I know that sharing us will be hard on him. I'm not sure what the schooling requirments will be for this child as it wasn't mentioned, but even if this place doesn't offer it, I may just convince 'Dan to put him in a normal school so that Reese still feels special and gets that one-on-one time with us.

I made this little form for Reese to fill out as a sort of journal since he's having problems learning his letters still. Drawing's not hard and it can help us figure out how he's feeling. Well, today, I had him do a sheet, explaining what he was supposed to do. When he brought it back, I was surprised. So I asked him who all the people on the bottom were. Apparently, the two tall black figures are me and Riordan. The little tan one between us is Caleb and the one outside of the heart is Reese.

I asked him if he felt that we didn't love him anymore and the poor boy started to cry, nodding. I hugged him, explaining to him that we still loved him very much, but that we also loved Caleb as well. Hopefully the two will work things out...

Adjustments at home

The men had prepared a room for Caleb, in hopes of being able to bring him home eventually. Finally, the day arrived and the men drove home and showed Caleb the house. A quick tour of the house was first. They went up the half-flight of stairs to the main part of the house. First was the living room and then the kitchen. Kaden pointed to the door to Reese's room and told Caleb not to go in there unless Reese let him in. Then there was the upstairs bathroom and their bedroom door, which Caleb was told was off-limits.

On downstairs they went, showing Caleb the main area of the basement and gesturing towards the laundry room and bathroom. The last place was the room they'd set up just for the boy. "And this is your room," Riordan told the boy, opening the door to show it to Caleb.

Then Reese came home and the troubles started. The fish boy was not happy that Caleb was there now. He stomped his foot and pointed at the canine boy. "Noah liuh-kuh!" The boy stammered before running off to his room and slamming the door.

Riordan and Kaden exchanged glances and Riordan headed off to Reese's room while Kaden sat with Caleb in the living room. "Caleb, there's some rules you need to know. We've already told you about not going into Reese's room unless he lets you and that our room is off-limits. But there are some more. Don't leave the house unless you've told either Dad or me. You can only go into the backyard. Don't go into the pool unless one of us is outside with you. No sweets before meals." The man paused for a bit, thinking.

"Oh, I teach Reese here at home, so I planned to have you stay here and learn at least for this first week. If you seem to know most of the stuff, we'll find a school for you, how does that sound?" Kaden knew that Caleb was a more outgoing kid than Reese and would not like being stuck at home all day. Plus, if the boy was as smart as the file made him out to be, he was right on track with his schooling. Or close to it. The file hadn't had much on what schooling the boy had gotten, but he seemed fairly bright.

Caleb scowled, kicking his legs. Kaden sat there for a moment and watched him, then smiled and ruffled the boy's hair. "Go on downstairs to your room. We'll have to go shopping later and get you some stuff, but you might as well get settled with what you've got now. We'll have dinner in a little while."

As Caleb darted downstairs, Kaden went to see how Reese was doing. He entered the boy's room to see Reese sniffling in Riordan's lap. The man had his arms about the boy, hugging him. "We still love you very much, Reese. I'm sure Caleb loves you, too. It'll just take a little while for you two to get used to both living here..." Riordan told the boy while Kaden sat on the floor beside them.

Finally, Reese calmed down and the family started to get ready for their first meal together. It was sure to prove interesting....

Well, Caleb got to meet his chimera for the first time today. Though the tech was rather rude to us, Caleb was very excited. I'm a little concerned on how this dragon chimera is going to fit in our house.. Or how Reese is going to take it. Riordan and I were talking about getting Reese a pet so that it wouldn't just be Caleb with something special. Probably a tank of fish or something a lot simplier to keep up with. But it'd be his own. We'd probably put the tank in his room, too.

Caleb talked about his chimera the whole way home and kept asking us thousands of questions we didn't know the answer to. Finally, I told him that when we got home I'd write them all down on a list for him. And I did, though I was stuck there for probably twenty minutes until he was sure he didn't have another question to ask next time. Poor tech is going to be bombarded next time...

Soccer Star

The whistle sounded and like magic, the dozen kids that had been running back and forth across the small area of grass halted and headed in one direction. Red and blue jerseys mixed as the two teams fetched their juice boxes and then started to scatter and find parents during their break. One of the children took his juice box and, while eagerly sucking at the little plastic straw, gazed about the stands.

Two men were sitting in the bottom row of stands, while another boy played nearby in the grass. They'd picked the end so that Reese could have some room to roam without disrupting the other parents. The fish boy was currently playing with some of his stuffed animals while sitting on the ground only a few feet away from the men. Kaden stood and waved at Caleb, who ran over happily as he spotted them. His tail was wagging excitedly and he couldn't wait until he got close to shout at them. "Did you see it?"

The men chuckled and Kaden walked the closing distance between them and the boy and put his arm about the kid's shoulders. "We did. You scored a goal and we're very proud of you!" The men were then subjected to a play-by-play analysis of the goal in question that lasted until the whistle blew again. "You'd better get back out there, Caleb!" Kaden gently guided the boy away, taking the juice box as the kid ran back onto the field to join his teammates.

The game continued on for the second half and the men joined in with the other parents in cheering the kids on. A parent or two yelled at the referee on occasion, objecting the call made. Riordan just shook his head. Some of these parents took this way too seriously. It was just a game for the kids to play and have fun with. What did it matter if they had a penalty called against them?

Caleb's tail was a blur behind the kid as he raced back and forth, occasionally in possession of the ball. But more often than not, he was merely trying to get the ball, either by stealing it from an opponent or by shouting at his teammates. Unfortunately, at that age, kids still liked to hog the ball whenever possible and there was little passing going on.

After the game, a rather excited Caleb found his fathers again. With such a young age group, the scores were always rather low and the boy had scored one of the few goals of the game. It was something to be proud of. And proud Caleb was!

The men decided to treat Caleb for his goal and stopped to get ice cream on the way home. Reese and the men got simple cones while Caleb was allowed to get a sundae. The boy was thrilled to get such a treat and dug in excitedly. The men exchanged looks, wondering if perhaps this had been a good idea after all...

Bringing Rex Home

Caleb had been sad when N said that he couldn't take Rex home right away. The boy had asked every day since when they were going to let him bring Rex home. He'd about driven Riordan and Kaden up the wall with the repetitive questioning. Caleb had gotten to go see Rex one other time since the dragon had emerged. And now they'd called and said that he could come and pick his chimera up.

"Faster Daddy!" The boy squirmed about in the back seat, unable to sit still for the drive to Faction S. Kaden sighed and didn't comment on the remark. The boy'd already said it fifteen times and they weren't quite halfway to their destination.

The whole family was in the car. Reese was even there, which was something rare for the boy. Most of the time, the men tried to leave the boy either with one of them at home or with someone else. But they'd thought it might be good for Reese to first see Rex somewhere other than at home. The men had also discussed the possibility of getting the boy a pet of his own... perhaps some goldfish. They were fairly hardy and wouldn't die if Reese forgot to feed them a time or two... or so the men hoped.

Finally, the seemingly-neverending car ride did just that. They pulled into Faction S and Caleb was out of the car before Kaden had managed to come to a complete stop. The family managed to group together and the men managed to get Caleb to slow down so they could all keep up.

Then N was scowling at them and showing them to where the dragon chimera was staying. Caleb rushed in and was hugging Rex before everyone else could get inside. N grunted something at them and left. Riordan hung back with Reese, who was not happy to see that Rex was BIG.

"Reese, this is Rex. Rex is coming home with us... He'll live with Caleb in his room, downstairs..." Riordan softly explained, crouching down to the boy's level.

"Noh wan'." Reese scowled, crossing his arms defiantly.

Riordan gently stroked the boy's hair. "What if I said you could get some fishies? And put them in a tank in your room. Just like Rex will be in Caleb's room."

Reese's face lit up at that. "Fis'ie??"

Riordan nodded. "Fishies. You can even help pick them out." That cheered Caleb's brother right up and made the process of getting Rex to the car and inside much easier... until it was time for Reese to get in.

"No!" He shook his head, clinging to Riordan's leg. The man didn't get it for a bit, but then realized that between Rex and Caleb, there was very little space left in the back for Reese... and the boy was obviously not too fond of getting that close to the chimera.

"Ride up front with me!" Riordan told Reese, which caused the fish boy to grin and Caleb to frown.

Kaden chuckled. "You're riding with Rex, Caleb... you can ride up front some other time."
