Sure, we've all probably seen the movie. But how many of us have read the book? Honestly I didn't know that it WAS a real book until recently. I just finished it a couple of days ago. Though the movie was great and I loved it as a young girl and still love it now, the book gave me a slightly different feel. I'm not gonna rant that the movie left out a bunch of stuff from the book. That's a given. But reading the book made it easier for me to fall in love and hate characters the way I never had before. I highly recommend those who haven't read it to go pick it up.

I ended up with abridged version by William Goldman. His liner notes that he has in various sections throughout the story, though insightful is very irritating after reading the introduction. So beware of that.

It's funny, I've picked up and started that book a half-dozen times but I was never able to finish it.

Perhaps I'll add it to my list of books to read.

I, too, loved the movie so I'd like to have more depth to the story and I think the book will give that.

I don't think you can find a version not done by Goldman ...

Being that the book IS more detailed than the movie was, it tends to be really slow. I think that's why you couldn't keep going with it. I had the same problem myself for a bit. I suggest not trying to blow through it. I ended up having to pace myself and finished it in like 8 days.

That I can't get a version of the book without Goldman's intrusive commentary is really disheartening. Surely someone, somewhere out there has a version of the story intact and unabridged.

Ummm, I have the book sitting on my bedtable but havn't actually started reading the story yet. Just some of his commentary.

There is no unabridged wersion that wasn't written by Goldman. The book is a satire and sometimes writers of satires will do things to make it seem like it wasn't them who wrote the story, such as in this case.
I think he did it to make the story more believable. Mark Twain also does a similiar thing with The Prince and the Pauper. He said that the story was passed down to him. I don't know if this is true or not. I guess only Samuel Sewell knows the anwer to that

Really? I had no idea that things like this were done. It's rather odd, but very interesting piece of information. Thanks, much appreciative.
