Familiar constructs are much smaller versions of the giant Ancient constructs that wander around Eidolon. They originate from special types of artifacts that react to the presence of unicorn magic. When a unicorn activates one of these artifacts, it generates a familiar that is permanently bonded to that unicorn; it will obey his or her orders without question and act as a tireless companion and protector. However, artifacts do not respond to everyone who encounters them. Activating one seems to require a certain amount of magical resonance…
• Familiars cannot speak and are rigid in behavior. However, they may develop basic personality traits, like stubbornness or friendliness, over time. • They come in two different versions: flawless marble, and deteriorated stone. Flawless familiars are rarer, more customizable, and slightly more powerful. • Archons, who are able to nullify magic, can temporarily deactivate familiars or cause them to malfunction if their magic skill is high enough. • However, familiars are extremely resistant to all other forms of unicorn magic, making them ideal guardians and protectors. Avian Familiar You can purchase a deteriorated feather with four coins, and a flawless feather with six. Avian familiars require a magic skill of two or higher to activate!
Avian familiars are small, about the size of peacocks, and valued more for their appearance than their usefulness (which is minimal). Owning an avian familiar nevertheless confers some measure of prestige, as they are astonishingly beautiful examples of Ancient craftsmanship—in addition to being quite rare, like all familiar constructs. A significant amount of the translucent magical energy that animates them remains exposed, giving them an ethereal, lantern-like glow. They are able to fly, albeit slowly.
