The discovery of the new species of mushroom had Naeria practically buzzing, and while she was doing what research she could on specimens of those that she'd collected, she was also spending plenty of time back out in the field, seeing what other things she might be able to find under these strange and possibly seasonal conditions.
So far, however, the mushrooms were by far the highlight of what she'd found. There were rumors on the human's news databases and media sites that strange things were happening. All Naeria had seen, though, were several ripe and ceremonially carved pumpkins.
Another set of eyes might help, she' though, and so she'd come out with Rhysi, who thankfully was not trying to speak with her.
She'd decided to come back near the mushroom cave, and that was when she saw it, in a crack in the sidewalk where she'd been hoping to find something growing. It was a small cube, human-made, and she reached down to touch it-
And then, suddenly everything around them was shifting.

Space ZeroOther Velencian projects had been buzzing all around Rhysi for month's now, and she felt it was more than time for her to look at their work and concepts. Get back into the mindset of Velencya rather than Earth, for awhile at least. Naeria was a good choice to latch onto, she had focus, didn't get too lost in chatter, and also was a nerd. Which meant her viewpoints and interests were different enough to be much more valuable than some faint echo of herself would be. Still. Naeria did pick up the shiny cube on the ground before Rhysi could get to it. Pulling out her short bow, ready to fire at her companion in a friendly show of hey that's mine, it was too late. Naeria was gone. Fortunately, there was another shiny cube on the ground. But when Rhysi picked it up, she was gone as well. Looking around, she gave the darkness and the the series of squares a curious look. Seeing Naeria nearby, she gave the other a reassuring thumb's up and squatted to inspect the ground. "Sub-dimensional key?"

Square 1
Naeria was jumpy from being teleported to a strange and unknown location. It brought Astraya to mind, even though it did not look at all similar. Still, her curiosity won out and she was already investigating and finding that an invisible wall blocked her forwards passage on the row of squares when Rhysi arrived behind her.
She jumped, and dropped the cube.
"Likely," she answered the other's question, "But I do not have enough evidence to say for sure."
Picking up the cube, she found that it had had rolled onto a side with one dot, and as she reached out to touch the wall again, it was gone, and instead, it was like she was being pushed forwards into the first square.
Also, someone was laughing at her, and that stole any other words of observation that she might have felt out of her throat.

SQUARE 5
Trying to follow Naeria proved to be fruitless. The invisible wall was still very there for her. Considering for a moment, she thought back to the other's actions. Touch the wall a certain way. Nothing. Jump. Nothing. Drop the possible key...and yes! The wall was gone and too could move forward now. As Rhysi passed Naeria to inspect further ahead, she thought she could hear laughing of some kind. She gave a frowning glance over, it was uncharacteristic for that loud sort of mirth to come from her companion. When she reached another invisible wall, Rhysi looked behind her and counted. Five squares. It corresponded with the five dots on the side of the key that had been facing up. It appeared this space had rules based on chance. But before she had time to think further on that, she was surrounded by the sound of something large. It barked and howl with clear violence in its intent. But Rhysi didn't see any beast to match such a disturbing noise. Could it be this and the laughter were...? "Audio hallucinations?" But if so, what was the intent?

Space 6
Rhysi was in front of her, but trying to move in that direction, Naeria found another invisible wall, and she could still hear the laughing over her shoulder, and some strange sound coming from Rhysi's direction as well.
Dogs? They did not sound happy.
Not knowing what else to do, she dropped the cube to the floor again, and this time the side with five dots landed face up. Then Naeria found herself moving forwards again, this time five spaces.
When she stopped, there was another sound. It was a sharper sound, one that reminded her of projectiles flying in the few battles that she had seen. She felt something fly past her nose, and when she looked, she could see that it had left behind something that looked like a sharp thread, or wire.
There were a few more around the square as well.
"It is not a hallucination," she said, because she was familiar with those and they were different. "There is something here."

Space 8It appeared Naeria, moving one square ahead of her own path, was experiencing something new. Possibly intensified? Curiosity had Rhysi tossing the key once again. When the snakes appeared, they certainly didn't not feel hallucinatory. Especially when one bit her leg as she shifted. There was, indeed, blood. Aggressively, she threw the key down again, wanting to get away from them as quickly as possible. Drawing her short bow, she made sure to shoot the offender before trying to dash out of the square. "They draw blood." Was that the intent behind this space? "Feeding off blood?" Or even, "Emotions?"

Square 12It drew blood. That was a concern. Her mind flashed to the last time that she'd been whisked away from Earth, and about how several of the Vanguard had lost their starseeds. She swallowed. However, she could not see any way out but through, and so she dropped the cube to the ground again. Six. She was making progress now. That much was certain, but the smell of smoke that hit her as she arrived in the new square only raised her level of stress. She could hear screams, too, and if the evidence was pointing to this not being a hallucination or a illusion, then who was screaming? She did not like it. She did not. "I do not know," she said, "But there is an end." She could see it now, up ahead.

Space 14An end? So it was limited, with progress determined by chance. But possibly also one's own ability to move past unpleasant distractions and very tangible dangers. This time her own roll was the maximum number of dots the key could provide. Very cool. The ground turned unpleasantly sticky, every step something of a struggle against what reminded her very much of the webbing that belonged to the multitudes of spiders that pervaded the scrapyard. Very like the creations of those tiny foes, indicating a not so tiny counter within this space. "A test for us?" Even as she asked she was holding out her weapon, something skittering just out of view.

Square 18Rhysi asked if this was a test, but again, Naeria did not know. Some things on Earth, in Destiny City, did not seem to have a purpose. They were just random, and awful. The next square that she entered smelled strange, in a way that almost made her gag. Her head spun, and she felt hollow, and strange, and wrong. She looked down at her head, and saw the skin peeling back, crumbling, showing bone. The squares were getting worse. They had confirmed that there was more to this than hallucination. She whimpered, and threw the cube quickly. She was almost at the end now, but she was not sure if it was a good kind of end anymore.

Square 20Walking forward, short bow at the ready, Rhysi inspected the long stretch of squares and found...nothing of particular interest. She tried turning back after a minute, realizing that it may be interesting to have samples on hand, at least of the webbing and snakes. But it appeared the only way was forward. Noting the color bit of aura that held the distinct feeling of freedom, Rhysi assumed it was the exit. Turning to gesture at Naeria, she announced, "Two more squares." With the occasional glance for her partner, most of Rhysi's attention was on the key in her hand. While there were definite random elements to this space, she firmly believed there was a purpose behind it. Perhaps it no longer truly served that purpose, but such a creation must have intent beyond what they'd observed.

Square 20
Rhysi looked alive, even in the last square and with the last roll of the cube, Naeria was able to join her there.
She winced, still half expecting some terrible death to be awaiting them, but instead when she looked back down, her hand was fine again. She found she could breathe again.
It was warm, and it was bright.
And then, with only the cube left to remind them of what had happened, they would be free.
