A cozy, one bedroom apartment littered with plants. Terra has no land to work on her alchemical inquiries so she has accumulated nearly a hundred plant pots inside. Large windows allow light to fill the room and the air is crisp thanks to the nature of plants producing clean oxygen. Her complex is 3 miles from the Glenvale police station she currently interns at.

Looking straight ahead to the road, the ride back was fairly quiet and quick as it only lasted a few minutes. Speed Limit 30 and him going a few over just before he slowed and pulled into the lot of Terras' apartment complex. Zane had a bit of a relaxed demeanor, aura, about him by the way he sunk into the leather captains seat. Then the little twinge of a lingering smile. Terra proved the break from the routine would be good in his mundane life... Despite him being reluctant at first to her company. He parked and unlocked the doors. As he readied to let Terra go, he turned his body and nodded to her, resting his elbow on the wheel. “I may arrive a little after midnight but, I’ll have the files and swing by to pick you up in the old decommissioned Jeep, It's a dark green now instead of white.” Zane said, his standard tone returned back to being to the point and systematic. But still holding that smile to his cheeks.
Pressing on the break with his boots’ heel, Zane straightened his posture and tapped on the steering wheel with his long fingers. Guess it was the anticipation of something different. He had to call his fellow officer to take the night shift without much prior notice. Eh, the man owed him a favor anyway. Nodding his head to Terra, a sort of farewell for now, “I’ll see you soon.”

As Zane pulled his truck into her complex parking lot, Terra made a deep breath to herself. Zane's company was not only nice, but it was all what she had experienced in years. For being such a home body on top of having zero family in the state, she had lived her days alone. Yet, Terra never slipped a complaint once in her life for she knew she was capable of changing her lifestyle. She could easily be more social, and she loved communicating with people in the neighborhood. Platonic friendships came naturally to her, but to take the extra step and spend voluntary time leisurely with others had yet to be in fruition. Maybe Zane could be the first. And maybe it is too late to think of those things. Her mind turned to the hotel and her mother. If she were still around in her life, everything would have been different, easier for Terra. The haunted hotel in town would stay a mystery forever. But ultimately, fate would lead her to it. Also, meeting her comrades, especially the role model that Zane was, at the station would not have been a reality had her unfortunate circumstances never came.
Anxiety sank when he turned to her and gave her instructions for midnight. Terra nodded. "Yeah...See you at midnight. Take care." She opened the passenger door and hopped out. She turned and gave a worrisome smile before closing the door and walking to her entrance. Terra would have a lot to prepare for, but first came a nap. She would need the rest in order to stay awake and alert for the night. Preparations would come at the few hours before midnight.

________________ Zane drove the decommissioned Jeep, the four wheel drive still worked flawlessly however, the ride hadn’t been so smooth compared to his squad truck. When he came to the county road, at least the ride became less rough by the circumstance of the better kept cement. His hand wrapped around the top of the steering wheel, making it easier to lean back and relax. That and lift his fingers to return the waves to those who passed him by in town. Well, the politeness was to the two who passed him, as the rest of the road was near empty at this hour. Zane, being alone with his thoughts while the mutterings of the radio faded to the background… he had a burning resentment to going to the hotel. He himself despite the place with a burning passion. Not because of the murders are the frequent calls received, not even from having to attend these calls but… simply because of what the hotel kept hidden and the things it attracted.
The occult and the paranormal happenings in the town from two hundred years ago originated from the Dead End Hotel. From the owner to be more specific however, even then the place attracted beings considered to be of mythos. Through his own reinvention of his identity, he knew far too much… More than he cared and let on to know. Zane pulled into the police stations’ drive. A pit stop on the way to Terra’s apartment, the files for their midnight date to create the most melodramatic scene between him and the intern. Walking in to the department, he scanned his key and nodded to the operators on standby through their window. A quiet night, the three of them leaned back in their chairs and one with his feet propped on his desk. Slow night. Unlocking his office door and walking in, Zane sighed and went to his desk to rummage through the files- pulling the key for the cold case files for the other filing cabinet As Zane muttered to himself, he pulled the files on Ms. Atwood’s cold case and flipped through them; scanning to make sure everything would still be there.
Hazel eyes went to the office clock. He nearly jumped out of his skin when he saw the time. He was running late. Zane closed the file and headed on out and back to his vehicle, the folder tucked under his arm and on the opposite side from where people would normally view him. At least the dive lasted a few moments as the time read 12AM. Just in time. Seeing the clock, he relaxed a bit and looked to his passenger seat where he had laid the files. “...I really should get another cell phone.”

Terra could not sleep. Too much clouded her mind yet again after her comrade dropped her off. Instead, she laid in bed with her furry companion and cried for some time. She needed to get the emotions out now before Zane could see. Any hint of weakness and she feared that he would bail on the plan later. She wiped the tears falling down her cheeks and said, "Mom, will I really find you? Or will I know the grim truth and discover you've been dead all along?" She croaked at the end of her sentence and continued to close her eyes and sob.
[[Time Skip]]
When the hour prior midnight came, Terra's alarm went off. This time it only beeped once before being noticed and turned off. I must have actually slept. She slowly sat up and slouched forward, thinking. I need to pack things in preparation for any dangers that lie ahead. First, she changed her clothes into a skin-tight black long sleeve that sculpted her lean body. The only flattering feature Terra really had was her hips and the shape of them was outlined in her black sports leggings. Since it was November, she needed a jacket, but not something that would make her stiff in movement. Lucky for her hobby of exercise, she had an abundance of smaller ones that were perfect for tonight. Her black one would do. Next, she filled her backpack she always would carry with her, but this time with some unusual additional items. These items were placed in her closet inside a safe. With the digits to unlock, the safe opened. Inside were two short daggers that had an ebony shimmer on the blades. Also inside were tiny glass orbs, some with a deep purple liquid an others with a candy pink colored liquid. She grabbed three of each. There were a few orbs that had unique blues and greens, and she grabbed one of each as well. A drop of sweat slipped down her forehead. Her alchemy sessions had consistently been a fun hobby. Now the saved concoctions had a purpose. Terra felt the weight of responsibility with her creations all at once. She would use these to kill...
When Terra felt prepared enough, she sat at her windowsill looking out for the dirty old jeep. She checked the black watch on her wrist every few moments anxiously. It was down to the minutes before midnight and she started to second guess Zane's desire to help. When she could not sit and wait any longer, she stood and went for her fridge. She grabbed a water bottle and took a sip. Then she proceeded to place it on her side pouch on her bookbag. When she came back to the window, she finally saw the jeep. Immediately, the lights in her apartment were turned off and Terra came running out towards the vehicle. She could not see Zane's face very well inside but she had nothing to fear. She knew it was him. The passenger door opened and she saw his eyes first. The dim lights from the dash made his face look soft which was completely new to her. Comfort and excitement flowed through her body as she hopped inside. Terra felt safe again. "Officer," she began. "I'm ready when you are."

Zanes hand reached out for the papers, he grabbed the manila folder and brought it to his lap. Parked now in front of the apartment, he lifted them to the steering wheel while he waited for Terra to come out and set his jeep in idle. The tinted windows inside made it difficult to see who exactly was in the driver seat until he hit the overhead light on to see what was in the folders. Zane started reading, scanning the papers over and over on the front page and then flipped several pages in. It’s been a while since he had read the case… He closed the files and turned the light out. Sitting and having a moment to himself, Zane looked reminisce about his first patrol, how confusing the job was and how overly ambitious it was to take on the task. Officer of the Peace depended on social structures and many of which he hadn’t known about before. Grievance was one of them... And what unusual things people do to one another when they’re in such an emotional state. More like, it’s insane on what they did to one another.
His first patrol became a recovery effort. A female in her late thirties recently lost her husband and in her grievance, took her child and went over the ledge of the cliffs. Zane found the child… but the mother became lost at sea. Zane remembered being soaked from diving into the waves to save them and at least his effort had not been in vain. He carried the child back onto the beach to resuscitate her until paramedics arrived.
Eyes flickering to the apartment windows as the light turning off caught his attention. He cleared his throat and unlocked the passenger door. Inside the jeep smelt of salt water, primarily from the beach patrols he made back when this vehicle was in service and also mixed with his natural scent. Terra climbed into the passenger seat from the unlocked jeep door and he immediately handed her the files. “Officer?” Zane chuckled and shook his head, waiting for her her to buckle so he could back out. The accentuation of her figure through the tighter than normal clothes… he caught himself a little entranced before he averted his gaze quickly to his back mirror. Perhaps the attraction was more to the sound of her heart pounding and the heat radiating off her soft flesh. Tis the coming of the winter solstice where his hunger would be more cruel. Tis the season.
“There wasn't much evidence left behind. All they have are speculations and old pictures of suspect diagrams... Unfortunately, these are common with disappearances and murders at Dead End... puns not intended,” Zane spoke and backed the jeep up and drove onto the road

Despite the fact that tonight would be filled with mystery and suspense, the deep chuckle from Zane was pleasing to the ear, making Terra smirk. That was, until he handed her the paperwork. As he said, there was not much that the community nor Terra did not already know about her mother's incident. Her picture was shown on the top left of the page, and it made Terra's heart swell. But she could not cry. Those tears were exhausted form her completely. The next pages detailed the scenery: blood smeared on the walls and ground in the alleyway which she last had a footprint. Hand prints that could only have resembled her mother's struggle to escape from whatever was taking her... Tragic. "Well, this is good closure to my questions about legal matters. Thanks for bringing this. I hope it wasn't any trouble." She placed the files on her lap. She had seen enough.
For some reason, the air in the jeep felt heavy, almost clammy. Maybe it was the slight hint of sea salt from the seats, but Terra's breathing became a little heavy. Something seemed strange inside, but she couldn't take a glance at Zane to find out if it was just her for some reason. It felt like he was hovering over her from behind, stealing the oxygen she needed. Close, nearly touching her, but not quite. Like there was some type of tameness to him. She shook her head and asked, "Mind if I crack the window open?" Terra already had her hand on the window handle ready to crank.

Zane drove to town as the cab became quiet. His peripherals observed Terra's once bright expression turn dour upon the gruesome and morbid photos taken from the scene. She entranced herself within the papers and analyzed what had been collected and he assumed her process of internalizing what he had given her and he kept his silence. This was her mother's blood, the smearing across the wall and the bits of spatter trailing from the alleyway. Zane could not understand the sentiment of loss but he could recognize this could correlate to a grievance. Empathetic to Terra's feelings, he could fee a certain uneasiness radiate off of her when she requested the window to be rolled down. He nodded his head with an accompanied reply, "I don't mind."
Taking a hand off the wheel, he grabbed what seemed to be a flask tucked in his boot. He bit the tip and unscrewed with one hand while he continued to drive. Typically expected from a silver flask would be the scent of whiskey but this scent would have been fruity and sweet. A pleasant break from the salty and stale air in the Jeep. Zane took a few drinks of the clear liquid and nearly all at once, his hunger would be satisfied, along with the temptation of the human female sitting next to him. The curse of being a Kelpie but he couldn't be more thankful for the gift of this flask to keep the edge under control. Luckily he hadn't had the urge all day considering he left this thing at home.
He cleared his throat, "John Abernathy... You know it's only a legion, right?"

Pleased to see how Zane ignored her state of strange heat, Terra rolled down the window halfway. Afterwards, a whiff of something sweet and fruity filled her head. It was a unique scent. And in seconds, the smell disappeared. Maybe it was from passing something by, she thought. As she turned her head to finally catch a glimpse at the driver, she noticed a flask being put away. This was likely the origin of the sweetness. How did I miss that? Hmm...Perhaps the noise of the wind is why. Almost as if he knew she was peeking, Zane raised the question about the original owner of Dead End, John Abernathy. Through recent weeks of investigation, Terra knew only the basics along with some extra superstitions from bloggers online. "Well, he's a dead man. Murdered in his hotel...Another unsolved mystery." She sighed at that fact. Even hundreds of years later, law enforcement still can't crack every case. Terra fell silent, wondering if she should add more in the case of Zane testing the waters of her knowledge. "However, I think... along with others...that he is still alive. And he is responsible for the odd occult events that occur at Dead End. And if so, I'd like to ask him some questions. But why do you mention that? What do you believe, Zane?" She finished with a hint of doubt in her voice. She did not expect a great answer.
They were nearing the street that Dead End belonged to.
