A character I made for a friend's Avatar guild. Since I'm used to playing healers, I went with that. With the way Avatar works, that choice alone decided my bending element: water. The names of the character and his pet snake are supposed to be a pun on Teru Teru Bozu.

Home Nation: Foggy Swamp Tribe Rank: Adept Chi: 600 XXXXXXXX{ appearance }Personality: Kateru, Teru for short, doesn't even need to try to look disagreeable. It seems to be the natural state of his face to look dissatisfied with the world as a whole. He's a whole lot nicer than what his face implies, genuinely caring for the well-being of even strangers and not really having anything trivial that he genuinely dislikes. He does think a lot, though, which means less time to think about what kind of expression he's making, and that leads to more mistaken assumptions about his meanness. Studious and inquisitive, Teru is hard to anger, and is more inclined to ascertain the motives of the other side than to beat them up from the get-go. Careful, he keeps a neat and tidy appearance, complete with the small details and accents (i.e. accessories) to bring his look together. This care extends to his decision-making. Perhaps to a fault, he tends to double and triple check all of his actions, which results in him sitting on the fence on decisions others have taken sides on long ago. Part of his partiality to neutrality is also from pacifist tendencies. If he can, he'd rather that no one gets hurt, or if they do, then that each side has access to appropriate medical treatment. In his heart, he just wants what's best for everyone, and to be certain that he won't ever regret the decisions he makes. Still, he's very young, and in the middle of puberty, no less. Outbursts of temper or rash thinking caused by hormonal swings are not unheard of, even if they appear only once in a blue moon, and with his mean face, Teru seems to just naturally generate an aura of angst regardless of what he's actually thinking. Side note: He's good at cooking… except when he forgets that not everyone likes bitter, medicine-like food. Theme song: Broken Moon [Folk Remix] Height: 5' 8" (and still growing!) Weight: 129 lbs Build: Slim and athletic. His fit form comes from years of a naturally physically active lifestyle with a short bout of martial practice mixed in daily. Hair Color: "Dirty" white or a very light shade of gray. Eye Color: Ice blue Complexion: Healthy and clear. He's got the look of someone who takes care of his skin, which he does. Outfits: Basic travel wear. A comfortable white tunic is worn beneath the brown poncho shown in his image. For the bottom half of his body, it's dark brown pants and boots. He has holsters for his weapons, a belt lined with pouches for little knick knacks, and a sturdy backpack for everything else. Small accessories, like the necklace, scarf, feathers on the left side of his head, and earrings shown in the picture and a woven bracelet on the right wrist serve as accents for his outfit. To protect his hands, he usually wears brown leather gloves. Yes, his earrings are symmetrical. Likewise, so are the clay marks on his face. Although, only one side of his head is adorned with feathers. However, Teru was raised in the Foggy Swamp Tribe, and he's come to consider the swamps inhabited by the Foggy Tribe as his home. The dialect of the Foggy Swamp Tribe is like a second native language to him, the first being the standard, educated dialect his father and mother speak.
It all started in the Northern Water Tribe. Winter solstice was when Teru was born, the day when water benders were at their strongest. That being said, the birth was accomplished safely and any complications were completely smoothed over by the empowered midwives. A healthy baby boy brought into the world, and the first son no less. Most mothers would relax and begin the long, confusing journey of raising a child. Not Teru's, though. No, definitely not Teru's. Soon as she could move, Teru's mother began packing and getting ready. A few months ago, Teru's father had left the North Pole to study the Swamp Tribe in person. It had been a trip he had been planning for years with his wife, it had started so long ago that his wife wasn't even his girlfriend back then. The pregnancy of his partner was certainly not planned, though, so some adjustments had to be made, including setting off without his wife. Teru's father had somehow managed to convince Teru's mother to stay put, at least until she delivered the baby. Well, Teru was born a healthy baby boy, so she had no reason for stay any longer. Teru's mother packed and, with newborn child in tow, successfully made the journey to the Swamp of Dreams in the vast Earth Kingdom. That is how Teru ended up being raised with the Foggy Swamp Tribe, and not the Northern Water Tribe, as his home.
Thus, Teru's first memories, besides those of parent and home, were of the Foggy Swamp Tribe. Growing up, he was of course taught the customs and culture of his Northern Water Tribe, practicing many of the old traditions with his family. Rather than the swamp bending of the tribe he considered his home, he learned water bending from his mother, showing proficiency in the practice of the medical water bending style. However, unavoidably, it was the ways of the Foggy Swamp Tribe that he truly experienced in full even if he did not adopt their bending style. One lesson from the Foggy Swamp Elders that really stuck with Teru was the idea that everything in the world was connected, a theory that was supported by the massive tree that interconnected the entirety of the swamp that the tribe called its home.
The Foggy Swamp was Teru's happy home. Of course, that wasn't to say that Teru left the Foggy Swamp. At least once a year, Teru and his parents made a trip outside of the swamp for various necessities. Usually, it was a nearby village or town. Sometimes, it was further, like the one year Teru returned to his birthplace, the North Pole. This year, the 17th of his life, Teru and his parents decided to visit Ba Sing Se. It wouldn't be their first time visiting the capital of the Earth Kingdom. However, it would be their first time getting caught in an invasion when visiting the city.
Teru was outside the city walls, exploring the native flora and fauna with Bozu the family's pet reinsnake, when the Red Lotus attacked. Of course, with the blitzkrieg tactics and the swift lockdown of the city, he had no chance of making it back in time. Now, alone and on the wrong side of the wall, he assists the White Lotus in their attempts to infiltrate the city so that he may one day reunite with his parents.XXXXX▇▇ ☯ ▇▇ ┈┈┈ ┆ COMBAT ▇▇X XXXXXXXXX{ weapon Xinfo } Elemental Affinity: Water Specialized Bending: Not yet.

A ruckus in the distance caught Teru's attention, and in the early morning light, he saw a red glow that did not belong. Smoke rose in full force from the source of the glow. "Wh-what?" Teru stared agape in horror as he saw the swamp burn, something he had never seen at this scale. This was a swamp for crying out loud. Everything green was also wet.
Unnatural was what the burning was, and Teru couldn't just leave it alone. "Bozu, hang in there," Teru warned the snake that was coiled up somewhere inside his backpack before double timing it to the source of screams and suffocating smoke. The path he took to the commotion never strayed out of easy reach of a source of water, and as he passed by hastily evacuating residents, he could make out something besides screaming in the mix of human voices. There were also excited, daresay happy, whoops mixed in with the screams of fear and panic. Given the current circumstances, Teru could only take the whooping to mean that this burning was indeed intentional. His teeth grit in anger, his emotions matching the scowl on his face for once,
Once he came to the conclusion that someone was intentionally causing this mass panic, Teru stopped running. He gave another warning to his safely stowed away pet, "Brace yourself. I might be fighting soon," as he struck a a neutral water bending stance: feet shoulder width apart, shoulder facing the enemy (or towards the fire, the direction Teru expected the enemy to come from), and hands resting in the air at waist level. His surroundings were given a quick check and then double check so that Teru could mentally map out the important details of the small plot of land he had decided to guard. The way he saw it, running forwards into the middle of the inferno ran too many risks of him missing the perpetrator of the fire, or even worse, getting trapped into a position where he struggled to water bend. Here, in this space he had decided upon, there were several rivers in his field of view. In fact, he literally had one foot in a river. It was true that he didn't know if the arsonist was even going to come in his direction, but there wasn't anything he could do alone that would increase the chances of catching the arsonist.

Assertive, domineering, and with a temper to match, she is loyal and fiercely protective of those she loves. Her strong outer shell, however, hides a series of serious insecurities. She fears, most of all, losing even more people she loves, and for that reason, she can be ridiculously clingy despite her independent nature. No, if anything, her independent nature makes it harder to get rid of her. It is hard to deny the woman that looks like she will charge at you anyways. She bears, as well, a deep-seated grudge against the Red Lotus for, in her opinion, killing her family and best friend. She bears, as well, an incredibly soft spot for the avatar, making her opinion on this matter between White and Red Lotus rather clear cut. Though, by her husband's insistence on her safety, she does not join the White Lotus and tries her best to live a quiet life keeping her family safe and happy.

In year 148, her young life fell apart when the sudden conflict around the avatar led to the two separating, instilling in the 12 year old Kanua the first seeds of a lifelong insecurity revolving around separating from her loved ones.
For the six years following, Kanua tried fiercely to catch up to Kuraka, whose achievements and leaps of skills she heard through word of mouth. Once she finally hits 18, she takes off from her northern watery home and tracks after her friend, eventually reuniting with her in the Fire Nation. In the battle that sparks within the Fire Nation, Kanua fights alongside Kuraka and escapes with her, finally living up to the promise she made when she was younger, the promise to stay besides and protect the ones she cherish.
That feeling of a goal accomplished, however, is not allowed to last long. One year later, while occupied by other matters and unable to attend the great meeting between the avatar and the two lotuses, the 19 year old Kanua is given terrible news. Kuraka had died, and so had both of Kanua's parents. The seed of insecurity from 7 years ago bloomed, leaving Kanua traumatized and heavily unwilling to part ways with the person she cares about.
In the funeral service following the disaster, Kanua is reunited with a man who she will later marry, after her fresh wounds were given time to heal and scar. It was like fate that they met again, when their first and only other meeting was at the faraway fire nation, and the two sought solace in the other following the tragedy. A couple years later, they married, and Teru was born.XXXXX▇▇ ☯ ▇▇ ┈┈┈ ┆ COMBAT ▇▇X XXXXXXXXX{ weapon Xinfo } Elemental Affinity: Water Specialized Bending: Steam
