The Mayor's Wife
Kimi

For my dreams I hold my life
For wishes I behold my night

Now they were free of the town, she imagined that Dixon would have been feeling much better. She was grateful for the time to escape, even for a little while. Unfortunately, she couldn't shake the feeling that she might have wanted to stay in town. There was so much yet to do, and it seemed a little rude to be gone when others arrived in town... and especially with Xerseis' plans....

She could trust their head of information, but she felt there was still a limit to how much she could trust him. She wasn't entirely certain of why.... Perhaps it was because she was aware of his line of work, and what kind of occupation he had before he came to be a member of their staff and the city.

She turned her attention back to her husband and offered him a smile. "How are you feeling now?"

At least the road wasn't too bumpy--figuratively and actually--for this Titus could be glad. Ah, perhaps glad wasn't the right word; the mayor could breathe easy knowing he was likely to show up to the unveiling as himself and not a fancy scarf draped over Kimi. He held out a little, however, pinching his nose lightly and rubbed his eyes to the rhythm of the road's soft chattering.

He didn't sleep well that night. Something in the night--oh yes, he was definitely out cold as soon as he and Kimi finished their night cap and crawled up on that creaky-plush bed like the flickering lights from just a few moments ago had--but something did wake the mayor, somehow--maybe it was a night terror about what was lurking in the ruins at Ikana (you know, they had done extensive excavating there and, as exhilarating as that was, it was only a matter of time before some menace had been exhumed; this was the rallying call of the conservative crowd, perhaps channeling a pragmatism: what if it all caved in!?), hostilities from the old chiefs (old raiders, rather; the headhunters seemed to transition well into a life of literacy and exemplary judicial work among the Ikana, proving their high cast with a brutally efficient character), or maybe just a cold breeze rolled the mayor out of the sheets and into his office for a night that stole on green dawn of paperwork... Sweet, sweet paperwork.

His attention snapped to the world before him--the teetering horizon, the smell of rocks and sweaty horses, and a voice that was his reason for being reasonable--and slowly willed himself upright. He offered Kimi a little smile, nodding as though approving of a meal placed before him before turning his eyes to the countryside. He seemed to be able to articulate when he did. "... The gorons never come down this way--but look! there's a perfectly good path there... Right to Clock Town..."

Kimi turned her eyes to the window and to the path that he referred to now. Yes, it was as serviceable a road as she had ever seen. Perhaps in time it would be even more worn down, especially if more people found this road and came to use it. Their town was slowly growing in popularity, especially among the traders who would benefit from trading and bringing their wares and bringing some of the creations their artisans crafted.

However, as the path currently stood, it was such a pretty and gentle place. It seemed peaceful. Even as they passed it, it seemed so serene. She found herself suddenly and strangely missing long walks in the pastures and over greens such as these. How long had it been since she distanced herself from the noisy city?

"Perhaps if we travel this way more often, we will find others make use of it also."

The mayor couldn't help chuckling, nearly silently, to himself, softly shaking his head. "That's how it's been so far. We lead and they follow." And he withdrew again. He sighted something on the horizon--or at least between the horizon and some far-off glen. it looked as though it was made for ground, but it was in the air. He blinked and it was gone.

The rest of the way was pretty quiet. Titus almost fell into a second nap because of it, but was snapped to a painful level of alertness by a bandit attack. The guards at the front did their job and took on the bandits, locking blades, but it was clear this was going to take a while. They didn't have any whiles to spare...

"Morons!" Titus busted out of the carriage and brandished a knife from his breast pocket, an old trapping of his adventuring days. He did what he had to to chase off the marauders as quickly as possible, coming away with a couple scuffs and cuts and sweat to make him extra presentable for the event...

    "There we are. On, men."

Kimi was still anxious whenever bandits, or any hostilities, occurred while she was nearby. She was more anxious still to see her husband draw out a knife as though he was still prepared, and without so much as a word to her, leapt from the carriage to join the fight.

She hated worrying and dreading for his safety. She knew he was strong. She knew he was skilled. She knew that he had survived many worse things than bandits by the wayside. But she still couldn't erase the thought that it only took one mistake, that it only took one lucky strike, that it only took that once from any skirmish to take him out of her life.

She was barely used to their married life. They were considering more of the possibilities included in that. She wasn't ready to lose him.

Kimi still felt tension even when he returned to the carriage. She sat beside him and did what she could to right and straighten his coat and clothes, but there was very little she could do for the cuts and scrapes. He was only hurt a little, but... Did he have to scare her so much by being hurt at all?

Damn him for being so important to her!

She pulled her hands back into her lap and folded them. When the carriage began to move, she made sure she was in her seat. There was too much to say for her to choose where to start.
