He actually has two varients -- MASSIVE Fluffy cat tail and Vine Tail. Their species are "Felinis Flora", which is a type of Cheshire Kin -- A Cheshire Cat Decendant with the capability of developing the powers to become a true Cheshire Cat. MOST kins are just sort of that, -- a sort of hybrid that didnt get the powers but has the capabilities. Some dont even Look remotely catlike except for a minor trait and can end up going generations before one reaches twilight, when a spark happens inside them and they dawn into their cheshire cat heritage.
However SOME Kins actually have dominant genes that are more strongly a mix and instead of hybriding and breeding less and less visible over time or being born without any real noticable traits, they can actually breed with other species and have their own traits dominate, which become a Kinbreed -- A species that has a higher chance of developing the recessive and endangered cheshire traits.
My wonderland is sort of set in a world that was reset: There was a massive magical war that tore the planet physically asunder, but the core keeps them together and livable, though the different rocks separate. Neverland is the other side -- the "Second Star" to the right is actually the Magical Core of the planet shining like a second star... And it's actually seen from other dimensions and planets through a wormholes only able to be activated by the spritetouched of Neverland.
Wonderland meanwhile is either accessable by flight by neverlanders, though they rarely bother since the two fragments are so far apart from each other, and the way to access their planet from other worlds or to leave it is via Rabbitholes -- Like wormholes, but the Wonderlandian Greater Rabbit has the ability to control and change where they go. Wonderland is more prone to Storms of Stale magic though.
Another reason why the Neverlanders dont bother going that frequently. Lumaria and Tulgey are the result of such a magical storm -- their father had simply been helping gather things for a bunch of sentient flowers in exchange for oils to make a perfume to impress a Cheshire Queen, and while he wasnt there when the storm happened, a bit of dander and pollon from different plants of the garden were still charged with the wild energy and accidently made a mishmash of genes
And the culture and issues. Like "Regal Red Madness" -- that there's an ore that is used to create red dyes in everything, but its toxic and can lead to bouts of delusions, anger, rapid moodswings etc as the poisoning wears on. Which unfortunately affects the nobility, the Rich, certain types of workers (such as hat makers, pottery makers etc) and those who work in the court the most.
Some cities and villages within the Three Northern Kingdoms (Queen of Hearts, ANd the red and white Queens of the Mirrored Kingdoms) have simply found it fashionable to follow suit, mimicing said behavior to appear in the know.
Tulgey Woods meanwhile dominates much of the south and cleaves itself northward, becoming swampland, then mangrove, then saltwater mangrove and patchy islands all the way to an island further north on their fragment, where the hUnting of the snark took place -- Tulgey woods is a massive and overpowering force of the central and northern part of the fragment, with trees that walk and all sorts of Snarks and Beasties.
Snarks meanwhile arent actually a specific singular species, but rather a collection of creatures made by magical storms -- Lumaria and Tulgey classify as Snarks (though Tulgey got his Twilight so is technically a Cheshire Cat, but the Felinis Flora part of him is so strong that it reflects in his children too -- OC Tulgey actually has a Daughter. CHeshire society sadly doesnt allow Male kins into their ranks since there is too much competition for Queens anyway, with Cheshire cats being an endanger species of semi-ascended being, part magic part biology) until proven either Safe enough to enter society as Curiousities, though few snarks are given the option since most fear them on sight or actively hunt them down as trophies.
Lumaria finally gets acceptance by the farmers living on the edges of the Forest and some of the bandits from the southern kingdom, which actively bans Red (to prevent Madness) and lives not only south of the massive southern side of Tulgey Wood, but south of grasslands and a desert.. Though SOME bandits are honest and kind to him, and the other group that shows up convinced him that they're part of the same group and take advantage of his lack of societal contact early on to rip him off -- while he doesnt have money, he's a superior hunter of Bandersnatches and Jubjub birds, has access to hard to reach materials, and is a mighty fine Puzzlebox and clockwork maker (using things scrounged from junkyards to make "Clockwork decoys" or rather windup robots) and potion maker. So that second group kept him isolated from society for as long as they could and sort of broke down his self esteem, which made it so he lived a long time alone and convinced that he was lucky to get what he got cause he was clearly some sort of Monster that terrified people at the site of him.
While the Farmers of the forest came to see him as a shy but benevolent Forest spirit, since if they left out offerings at the edge of the forest, like eggs or sacks of sugar or flour or seeds or clothes or whatever whenever he was spotted, they'd find some much more difficult to get items in return.-- His ability to phase through plantlife and even encouraging it to grow while inside of it making him seem more plant than creature frequently, but he was humanoid in appearance so they figured he was some sort of fairy or spirit.
EVENTUALLY a family puts the offering shrine closer and closer to their barn cause their kid noticed he came about the same time each week and had met eyes with him and saw the lonely expression for the second before he vanished into the trees again. Then after a few weeks of him taking it from directly up against the barn, which required he phase out of the plantlife and creep across the dirt road, she left the door slightly open and managed to catch him off guard.
Of course he hid in the barn. But also started apologizing and asking if they wanted what he had taken back -- what he hadnt already used. And so the family eventually coaxed him out, though he used a size potion to make himself less intimidating cause he was possitive that he'd scare the hell out of the family otherwise.
I plan on bringing Lumaria into the shop eventually, yes -- the story would be converted to having his basket Washed out the same time Tulgey's got separated from Etcetera during a rainstorm, and his managed to make it out all the way to the Kawani Sea and into an Island populated by usdia who had only ever seen predatory kelpie before so thought he was some big bad dangerous monster so he lives in the jungle of the island -- though they realize he isnt dangerous pretty quickly but early impressions keep him isolated and shy for much longer than necessary and startles of seeing big pony on the island -- first instinct is one of the kelpie that torment them and they scream and he startles and bolts off back into the jungle
Mind: EVENTUALLY they'll coax him out and help him get a ride on a boat to the mainland.
Lumaria's Plantcat is less spikey and thorny and skeletal and more like a mane coon version of "mosscat" http://kattything.deviantart.com/art/Mosscat-in-Springtime-77318291
Though in the few AU's he DOES become a cheshire, he tends to stick to his Plant cat form more.. THough except in worlds where the yhave a way to regrow his fur tail (since he lsot it pretty young to the Dutchess's cook), always has the vine tail.
