xxx»» Norah has an extremely vivid imagination, and a drive to put that imagination to use. She is never not working on some project, to varying degrees of success. She has her own sense of style and aesthetic and doesn't much care for convention. She's prone to shopping at thrift stores, buying the things no one else will look twice at, and finding ways to alter and/or combine them to come up with an interesting look. She has a keen eye for color and can never seem to settle on an artistic medium for her expression. If it exists, she wants to recreate it in paint or chalk or clay. xxx»» It's very hard to keep Norah's attention on any one project for long. She tends to flit between things with little to no care for what she's abandoning. She's the queen of turning in half-finished assignments that showed a lot of promise, if she'd bothered to complete them, and has mostly coasted through school on her teacher's good will. She's intelligent, but lacks follow through. All anything has to do to draw her attention is be new and shiny. Her passionate nature cannot be contained, and her room and much of her home are a disaster of half-finished paintings and sculptures and dresses.
LOUD
xxx»» Norah struggles greatly with the concept of 'quiet.' She finds silence incredibly distracting, and usually needs some kind of music or white noise to keep herself from going insane. She claims she has overly sensitive ears, and can hear everything creaking and groaning and whispering around her if it's too quiet. If she needs to be her own source of noise, she will, constantly singing (quite loudly) to drown out all the little sounds. Her attitude also speaks for itself, both in her inability to shut up, and her clothes. She is determined to grab attention whenever and however she can, because nothing's better for keeping it from getting too quiet than a good conversation between friends.
UPBEAT
xxx»» Norah's an exceptionally positive person. She tries to always look on the bright side, and is the first person to paste a smile on her face and point out the silver lining when something bad happens. It's very hard to get her down. She reasons that, life isn't going to make things easy for her, but she's sure as hell not going to make things easy for it, either. She's a fighter, bound and determined to be the change she wants to see in the world. If nothing else, she'll cheer up her friends by acting out and being silly to distract them from their woes.
QUICK-WITTED
xxx»» Norah grew up listening to a lot of lawyer-speak, and knows very well how to twist and manipulate words to mean many things. She's not a mean person by nature, but she can be cutting when she wants to be. More often than not, she uses this power to be clever, coming up with puns that are equal parts funny and groan-worthy. She's also quite good at coming up with outside-the-box solutions to problems. Among her friends, she's well known for always being technically right, which she claims is the best kind. She's also an excellent debater, good at finding holes in other people's statements and using them to her advantage.
COMPETITIVE
xxx»» Norah views defeat as a learning experience. She's not really in it to win it so much as she views winning as a sign that she's gained knowledge. She's always striving to try her best, to come at it from a new angle, to come up with an answer no one's ever come up with before. She likes to apply her creative and quick thinking to any and all situations. She's prone to declaring anyone who beats her at something to be both her rival and her mentor, seeing nothing as a sign of growth moreso than surpassing a master. Her qualifications for 'master' generally are just 'better than her', of course, and she's always looking for the next challenge.

CHILDHOOD
xxx»» Norah's childhood was a fairly simple one, though she can find a way to spin it and make it sound incredibly dramatic. The most interesting thing about it was her birth itself, which is shrouded in mystery, mostly due to her dads never wanting to tell her about it. They always tell her it's not important, which she knows probably just means they acquired her through one of her Pop's many family law court cases. But, that doesn't stop her from pretending she's something dramatic, like a long-lost princess, left with them for her own protection after her kingdom was seized by an evil tyrant. She knows that's ridiculous, of course, but she told that exact story to most everyone she met between the ages of 4 and 9.
xxx»» At the end of the day, it didn't really matter if she was a long lost princess. She loved her dads too much to want to leave them and rule a kingdom, after all. Besides that, they were the two smartest people she'd ever met (both lawyers, one a muggle working in family law and one a wizard on track to the Wizengamot), and she didn't think any king of queen dumb enough to have their kingdom stolen could be a better parent than they were. Of course, she's seen the inside of many courtrooms and many more lawyer's offices, and has come to the conclusion that, other than her parents, most lawyers are terrible. She's not got much desire to follow in her parent's footsteps, and often feels adrift and pulled in too many directions without guidance. She was always hopeful, once she showed magic at age six, that going to school would help her sort it all out. Going to Hogwarts is basically all she ever wanted.

She struggled a lot in school and frankly was lucky that she was pretty enough to con smarter people into helping her with her homework. Helping, of course, and definitely not by doing it for her... most of the time. She was never made to feel particularly smart, and eventually decided it was easier to accept that she was lacking in the brain area and utilize the gifts she did have. Namely, her looks. She's not a complete idiot, but she does tend to miss a lot of referential humor and isn't particularly well-read.
RUTHLESS
xxx»» What Lettie wants, Lettie gets. She might not be book-smart, but she more than makes up for it with her absolute refusal to back down. She isn't above being a little underhanded to get what she needs, and doesn't feel much in the way of shame for it. She doesn't like using people, but she figures she's going to spend most of her life with people trying to use her, so fair's fair. She doesn't let anything or anyone hold her back.
CREATIVE
xxx»» Lettie might not know who wrote The Little Prince, or how to properly turn a rat into a teacup, but that doesn't mean her brain isn't working. It's just usually working more on the creative side of things than the practical. She's colorful, loud, and expressive, and finds any way she can to make a statement. Everything from her home decor to her clothes to her hobbies is about making herself memorable. She likes raiding the local thrift and antique stores to find "hidden gems" that she can alter and update into statement pieces.
OUTSPOKEN
xxx»» Lettie isn't one for holding her tongue. She doesn't really tend to process that sometimes it's better to stay quiet. Instead, she says whatever's on her mind, no matter how stupid it might make her look. While she knows that she doesn't know everything (or even most things), she's firm in most of her beliefs, at least moral ones, and not afraid to tell you what they are. She's proud of who she is and what she's done in her life, and doesn't let anyone get her down.

xxx»» Lettie is the absolute queen of hype. When you're facing something difficult, she's your cheerleader, loudly supportive almost to the point of parody. She doesn't let people put themselves down, and is constantly encouraging her friends to try their best, to shoot their shot, to do whatever they want and damn the haters. She knows you're guaranteed to fail if you don't even try, and if you fail, that's a learning experience. Stuff normally works out in the end, even if not the way you expect or would've wanted, and that's a good thing.

xxx»» Lettie generally likes everyone she meets. There are exceptions, and there are certain types of people she avoids on principle, but overall she's an open, friendly person. She makes friends easily and keeps them. She's very social, seeming to not even sleep with how much time she seems to spend keeping track of her friends. She's always the person to reach out to a stranger who seems to be having a hard time, and makes sure that newcomers or shy people are always included.

Her dad essentially decided that you couldn't both have sex with a woman and raise a kid with her without being a couple, and he wasn't interested in being a couple. He was, however, interested in being a dad, and was generally the best dad she could've asked for. She grew up well-cared for and extremely loved by both her parents, as well as doted on by her mother's family. Her father's wasn't around much, but that was fine with her, because they were sort of terrible.
xxx»» She found out the exact reason for why her dad's family was so awful when she was five and accidentally turned her stepfather's dog bright pink. Turned out, he was a wizard, and his family hadn't liked the fact that he'd hooked up with a non-magical woman and had a kid with her. If she'd thought that turning out to have magic might make things better, she was sorely mistaken; instead it seemed to make them like her even less. She was too little to understand, of course, but she didn't care much anyway. Her stepdad thought her magic was the coolest thing ever, and ended up becoming best friends with her dad through sheer determination to learn everything he could about helping his wife raise their little witch daughter.
SCHOOL YEARS
xxx»» If Lettie had one regret, it was that she wasn't ever going to be the witch her parents wanted her to be. She wasn't good at magic, wasn't good at memorizing spells and potions and rules and things. She was decent at charmwork and could pull off defensive spells when she felt threatened or was angry, but other than that, school was a struggle. Around fourth year, her grades miraculously improved. Coincidentally, that was the year she got boobs.
xxx»» If the two things were related, she wasn't about to admit it. In reality, there were a handful of boys she was getting to help her with her written work, so that the only thing making her grades suffer was her shoddy spells in class. The professors confronted her about it eventually, but she swore innocence. It didn't end up mattering; she dropped out at age sixteen after she realized there was no way she could pass her MATRON exams. She didn't return to school after the holiday break; she asked her parents to spend the last night of break with a friend. In reality, she moved in with that friend.
ADULTHOOD
xxx»» Her failure to return to school was swiftly discovered, and she came clean to her parents. They supported her, saying that having an education wasn't the only way to have a good life. Her stepfather was a little disappointed, but he didn't show it. Instead of returning and taking her exams, her dad helped her get a job helping out as a shop girl until she could get something figured out. She'd barely been at the job six months when her paternal grandmother died, leaving the family's modest estate to her father. Her father then set her up with an allowance to let her 'follow her dreams,' which resulted in her traveling to figure out what to do with her life. Eventually, though, he told her she had to get serious and settle somewhere. Not wanting to go back to France where she'd be under the watchful eyes of her parents, she ended up in England.

It's very hard to get her to change her mind once it's set on something. She doesn't like change, nor does she like being questioned, or questioning. She likes to get her way in things and tends to become incredibly annoyed when she doesn't.

xxx»» Kendall struggles a lot with her self esteem. She's very uncomfortable in her own skin, and it doesn't take a lot to make her feel inadequate. She feels like something is wrong with her, but she can't quite figure out what it is. xxx»» Kendall was the first and only child born to parents Logan and Margaret Saunders. Margaret, having come from a rather prolific family (herself being the middle child of seven), never wanted her own child to feel as though she barely had room to breathe. Somewhat unfortunately, the Wakefield clan was as close as a family could get, and Kendall always managed to feel a bit smothered anyway. She never lacked love, but she certainly lacked elbow room. Her childhood was fairly standard, with a close knit family providing all she could ever hope for. Unfortunately, she struggled a lot with feeling lost in the crowd, and desperately wished to be special. It was almost enough to make her wish that her great-grandmother, affectionately called 'Nan' by the whole family (and everyone else), had been correct in predicting that she would be the first male born to the family since her great-uncle Milo. She knew the family wasn't disappointed when she turned out to be a girl as well, but she couldn't shake the feeling that things would've been better if she hadn't.

She comes across as being quite distant, and even robotic, at times.

xxx»» She doesn't like to spend a lot of time waiting on things. She is very much a doer, preferring to improvise in the act over settling down and thinking things through. Waiting, she thinks, is a waste of valuable time, which could be better utilized. If she is in a situation where she has to draw up a plan, she will usually draw up the simplest version she can, to take up as little time as possible, and leave a lot of wiggle room to figure it out as she goes.

She still doesn't interact much, but she spends a fair amount of time people-watching and analyzing behaviors that are somewhat foreign to her.

She likes puzzles and stories, and generally will find a creative way to use her time if left to her own devices. She doesn't like to talk much about that, though, because when she and her brother Seaghdha were only three years old, their mother disappeared from their lives, no explanation, no contact, nothing. Her brother took it well enough, being the more optimistic of the two of them, but as soon as Mallaidh was old enough to understand what'd happened, she became very bitter about the whole thing. She doesn't remember her mother at all, and doesn't see any point to keeping around photos, or talking about her as if she's some important figure in her life. She especially doesn't see the point in pretending like she's anything but an incubator, because as far as Mallaidh is concerned, if she has a mother, it's her childhood babysitter Saoirse. Unlike Dinah, Saoirse was always there for her and her brother, even when their father couldn't be. Honestly, Mallaidh considers her almost more of a parent than Patrick, though she'd never say so to his face.
xxx»» Mallaidh was a very anti-social child, not caring for company other than that of her family. She took strongly to the stories that Saoirse and Seaghdha would tell her, enjoying their fanciful notions of the world outside their home town. She was equally delighted with her brother's magic, once it manifested, though she never really considered that she might have it as well. Seaghdha was a dreamer, a story waiting to happen, so of course he had magic. It only made sense. Mallaidh, on the other hand, was very much a grounded, down to Earth child, and so she never expected to be so special. Of course, the manifestation of her own magic was nothing like her brother's. Quite the opposite, in fact, because while his was born of excitement and joy, hers was an explosion of anger at their father, who was trying to get her to open up on the subject of their mother. Mallaidh had no desire to talk about a person she didn't even remember, and resented that her father constantly tried to remind her of the woman's existence. She suspected that he, and maybe her brother, always wished she would come back, but Mallaidh thought they were better off without her. She did a good job at keeping her anger in check, or at least, she thought she did. Outwardly, she showed no signs of being upset, other than her eyes. But as she spoke, the objects in the room began to literally shake with the intensity of her feelings. At first, her father thought it was Seaghdha, and begged him to stop, but he insisted that it wasn't him. It took them all a moment to realize that actually, it was Mallaidh. A few years later, a man came to their home, letters in hand, informing them that the twins were magical, and would be attending a special magical school. Mallaidh was skeptical, but curious, and found herself looking forward to what sounded to her an awful lot like an adventure.
SCHOOL YEARS
xxx»» Mallaidh was at odds with the magical world in the early days. Magic, and the way it functioned, was to her mind something that should exist only in fairy tales. Still, she found herself excited by the prospect of a whole new world with a whole new history to discover, and threw herself into her studies. She and her brother were sorted into separate houses, which resulted in her not being able to rely on him as heavily for the little social contact she required. She did make one friend, a fellow Slytherin named August, who she more or less ended up coaching through some rather awkward social situations with a girl. Considering Mallaidh herself wasn't blessed with anything approaching social graces, it was pretty bad that she had to be the voice of reason. She decided pretty early on that she had no desire for romance, which suited her just fine as she didn't seem to feel inclined towards it, anyway.

xxx»» When Asher wants something, there's very little that will stand between him and getting it. He's stubborn as a mule, and quite resourceful. While he's typically fine with sitting back and letting the world pass him by, there are certain buttons that, if pressed, he will refuse to back down.

In his youth, he tried to fill in the gaps in his own life, left by his absent mother and overworked father, with as many friends as he could juggle. He had a habit of ensuring he always had someone around to do whatever it was he had in mind, be it to go see a particular film or check out a museum. He figured that, the more friends he had, the less likely he ever had to do anything alone. His brother was always his first choice, and welcome to tag along, but having Matt around didn't always alleviate the loneliness, it actually heightened it because Asher felt responsible for him.

xxx»» Asher's never been one to leave something alone when it piques his interest. He's prone to obsessively scouring the library for every bit of information he can find on a topic, and has lost more than a few night's sleep to the black hole that is wikipedia. It's often not even information that he finds useful, or could ever need; it's just information that's there, so he wants to have all of it. It can sometimes take a lot of nagging and even physical force to get him away from his most recent information binge.

He has vague snippets of memory before that, but that's the first clear recollection he has of his own life. His childhood was mostly happy, but there was always an undercurrent of fear that one day he would come home and discover that their father had left them, too. He clung, perhaps too closely, to his younger brother, both in an attempt to protect him and to keep him close. Their father was supportive, and he loved them, but as a single parent with two children, he struggled. He was constantly working and left the boys to essentially raise themselves. They became very self-sufficient and learned to rely on each other more than their parent.
SCHOOL YEARS
xxx»» Asher was sorted into Ravenclaw for his love of stories and his creative mind. He tried to focus on his studies, but found himself easily distracted by his classmates, specifically the girls. Despite his mother leaving them and growing up with no real examples of a real relationship, he was something of a romantic. He spent perhaps too much of his time trying to woo his crush of the month. Eventually, he committed to a long term relationship with a girl one year below him. They were together for almost a year, until he caught her attempting to cheat on him... with his brother. Obviously Matt wasn't interested, and he immediately told Asher. The girlfriend tried to save face, but the damage was done. Asher, in a fit of rather dramatic rage, swore off dating. He focused more closely on his studies, and focusing more on his musical endeavors. He and his brother had been playing at being musicians for years by then, but now without the distraction of romance on his mind, and a lot of built up pathos, he was more dedicated than ever. It was especially helpful when their father passed away, and Asher had a reasonably healthy outlet for his grief and anger.
ADULTHOOD
xxx»» Asher and his brother found success fairly quickly, both in the magical and muggle worlds. While they were never quite as popular among muggles, they still got a fair amount of attention. Still recovering from his break up, Asher enjoyed the attention a little too much; he managed to get two separate women pregnant within a couple of months of each other, and ended up with two children. Neither mother seemed to want much to do with him, aside from financial support, which he respected, even if it wounded his pride. He eventually stopped trying to meddle, and focused on his band and his brother, particularly when Matt was in an accident that took both the life of his fiancee, and one of his hands. Asher took on the role of supportive brother, figuring that his kids had their mothers and apparently didn't need him as much as Matt did, seeing as he and his brother didn't have anybody but each other.
xxx»» At least, that was the case until both children turned out to be magical. His son, it wasn't so surprising, since his mother was also magical. His daughter, on the other hand, came from a muggle family, so he hadn't been sure. As it was, he was happy to have an excuse to be more present in her life. It was difficult, since both children had grown up with him being a background figure in their lives, and thus didn't want much to do with him. It only got worse when they discovered they were siblings, a fact he had neglected to inform them of. He was already on such thin ice with them, and their mothers, he was being something of a coward in keeping that from them. Things got worse, but also easier, when they discovered the truth.

It's something of a defense mechanism; she figures that if she's a jerk who drives people away, well, they were probably going to leave anyway, and at least she knew it was coming. She's snarky at best and downright hostile at worst.

Everything she's accomplished, everything she owns, every person she's allowed herself to care about, she will fight tooth and nail to keep and to take care of. xxx»» Gwen is extremely insecure due to her youth and the mistakes she made. She's managed to make something better of herself, but she still has a lot of weight on her shoulders concerning her past. Being around people with their lives more put together than her own brings up reminders of these things, and she tends to get extremely defensive as a result. She's quick to pick fights and try to belittle people by pointing out all the things they had that she didn't, thus making their successes not as meaningful as her own. Alternatively, she tries to bring them down to her level, by trying to get them to lose their temper or confess to something horrible to prove they're not better than her.

xxx»» Gwen's expectations were always set on the low side, but she'd be damned if she wasn't going to have them be met. She figured that she wasn't asking for much, the least people and the universe could do was give it to her. And she would do anything she could think of to get what she felt she was owed. She spent some time in her youth on the wrong side of the law trying to get ahead; eventually, a few close calls made her realize she was setting herself back and that she needed to do better. She spent a lot of time trying to find herself and a direction for her life. Once she had a plan, she wasn't going to let anything get in her way.

xxx»» Gwen has a very hard time being sincere. Honest communication, especially when it's positive, isn't something she's used to or comfortable with. She resorts to humor and teasing to try and diffuse the tension in any situation where someone is making her uncomfortable, either with a compliment or an expression of concern. It can be very hard to tell who she likes and doesn't like, because her preferred method of showing affection, and her preferred method of interacting with idiots, is the same; making fun of them.

Possibly the only positive thing that could be said about Owen Hier and Cheryl Keen was that they weren't around much. Which sounds like a very bad thing, except Owen Hier was a lazy slob with anger management issues who couldn't keep a job, and Cheryl Keen was an alcoholic from what used to be a well-off family who'd never quite figured out how to live with less. It was a match made in hell, and as soon as she was old enough, Gwen made it a point to never, ever be home at the same time as them, except to sleep. She took to spending as much time as she could hiding out at various neighbor's flats, or wandering the building if no one was willing to lend her their couch for a few hours.
xxx»» In her early years, Gwen saw herself as something of a Matilda character; a bright, unique little girl who'd been born into a terrible, terrible family. Unfortunately, there didn't seem to be a Miss Honey around to come save her from her parents, and by the time she was ten, she'd pretty much learned to do without. She was remarkably self-sufficient, and also remarkably mean. The only way, she figured, to cope with the big, bad world, was to be big and bad herself. She had a terrible temper, much like her father, and was lacking in both patience and tact. Around when she was eight, her temper flare-ups seemed to coincide with a lot of odd events around the house, such as things her parents 'desperately' needed disappearing without a trace, or some new electronic they were oh so proud of short-circuiting without warning. The answer was revealed when she was eleven; a man came to her door, and informed her that she was a witch. Her parents thought it was a practical joke, particularly when he started talking about a special school she would be attending. Gwen, already smarter than both her parents put together, was able to more or less manipulate them into 'playing along', and soon found herself with a trunk full of spellbooks and an actual magic wand. By the time she was off to school, her parents had more or less forgotten the whole thing even happened.
SCHOOL YEARS
xxx»» Gwen did manage to remind them that she was going to boarding school, of course, though she had to spin quite a tale to avoid them making the connection between that and their strange visitor. She was thrilled to get to spend time away from home, away from her idiot parents. She did well enough in her studies, and loved Hogwarts and magic, but didn't care much for... well, anything else. She didn't like people, didn't want to make friends. Just about the only thing she cared about, at least once she hit fifteen, was having a good time. Which she did, particularly during holiday break her seventh year, when she met a boy at a party in her building and got pregnant. Gwen discovered her pregnancy less than a month after returning to school. She quietly disappeared during a Hogsmeade weekend shortly after, and never went back to school.
ADULTHOOD
xxx»» Gwen, not wanting to deal with her parents on top of her pregnancy, ran away from home as well as school. She was homeless for a few months, stealing to get by and breaking into hotels for a bed to sleep in. Right around when she started to really show, she caught the attention of an older woman who ran a diner she'd begun frequenting. Nana, as the woman insisted on being called, had realized that Gwen was alone, and suspected she was homeless, and offered her a place to sleep and rides to see a doctor in exchange for working at the diner. Gwen resisted at first, but eventually agreed, seeing as she was going to be working and therefore earning her way, not freeloading. Over the course of the pregnancy, she debated with herself over what to do with the baby. Nana tried to convince her to keep it and to stay on at the diner, but the offer reeked of pity and Gwen refused, she only let the woman help while she was pregnant for the sake of the baby. She decided to give it up for adoption; when the baby was born, she didn't even look at him, didn't hold him, too afraid that if she did, she would decide to keep him and ruin both their lives instead of just her own. He was put up for adoption, and that was it.
xxx»» As soon as she was recovered from the birth, Gwen vanished again, leaving Nana and the diner behind without so much as a note. She traveled a lot, deciding to bum her way across Europe, looking for something. What, she had no clue, but she figured she'd know when she found it. Eventually, she ended up in Spain, and met Yenifer Desai, who from the moment they met seemed bound and determined to Be Her Best Friend. Gwen had never had one of those before, the closest she'd ever gotten was Nana. But Yenifer had the same wanderlust Gwen did, if not for the same reason, and so whenever Gwen left Spain, Yenifer followed, to the point that finally she admitted she was never getting rid of the other woman.
xxx»» Eventually, Gwen got tired of moving around with no real goal or purpose. She'd been an ambitious child, with dreams and desires, and she felt like she'd lost that person somewhere along the way. Conversations too late at night over too many drinks ended up revealing too many feelings, and she decided it was time to go back to the UK and do... something. She wasn't really sure. But she felt like she needed to 'go back home', so to speak, and figure it out. The two women discussed Gwen's likes, her wants and needs, and eventually settled on the idea of opening a coffeeshop. Gwen loved coffee, and tea, and most especially hot chocolate, and she thought that, what with her lack of NEWTs, owning her own business was as good as she could hope for. Yenifer agreed to help with the money to start the business, and the two began planning.

He always felt exceptionally close to her, despite their age gap, because she was the one who picked his name. She also seemed to enjoy spending time with him, and so he inherited her penchant for what he likes to call "impish behavior." Admittedly, he doesn't have much in the way of restraint, and sometimes doesn't consider the consequences of his pranks. He's sort of a live-in-the-moment kind of guy. As such, sometimes his pranks cause a little more harm than he might've actually intended.

xxx»» Pietro doesn't like to be bored. If left to his own devices for too long, he will devise some sort of nonsense game to amuse himself. If he can get others involved in his nonsense, the better. He has trouble taking anything seriously, which can contribute to his inability to know where to draw the line. He figures a little recklessness is a necessary component of enjoying oneself. He's acquired many an injury over his short years on this earth, and doesn't see them as anything to worry about. If he has a good story to tell, it was totally worth it.

xxx»» Pietro is a very outside-the-box thinker. He likes to solve puzzles, usually in ways other than those that they are meant to be solved in. He's got a habit of taking the long way around, just to see if there are other ways to accomplish the task at hand. It doesn't really matter to him if it's more work, because he likes knowing he came up with a new way of doing something. He's the physical embodiment of "you solved the equation the wrong way, but somehow got the right answer."

xxx»» One could be forgiven for thinking that Pietro isn't one to crack a book, given his usual behavior. But the truth is, he loves to read. He just does so more quickly than most people, a skill he taught himself so that he could squeeze as much reading and running into his days as possible. He isn't picky about what he reads, either, having been found with his nose in everything from YA novels (which he frequently laughs at, because teenagers) to physics textbooks (which he frequently laughs at, because magic). He's got a lot of random knowledge tucked into his brain, which is quite helpful with his prank-pulling and puzzle-solving.

xxx»» Pietro likes to make people laugh. He's not one to shy away from a chance to crack a joke, even if it's at someone's expense. Even if it's at his own expense, which is how he justifies it when it's someone else he's picking on. He sees humor as a tool to improve people's lives and to make them like him. He's not overly concerned with being liked, exactly, but he does know life is easier when you are. So he'll do his best to make people laugh, even if it means making himself look stupid for a bit. Or someone else, although he'll usually try to fall on the sword himself before resorting to that.

xxx»» Pietro tries to make a good impression. He likes people, for the most part, so it's no trouble to him to go out of his way to be friendly. Not nice, exactly, because he's far too snarky and far too ill-behaved to be nice. But he likes chatting with people, listening to them talk about themselves. He's easy enough to get along with if you're not the sort to hold a grudge, and admittedly if you are he'll usually go out of his way to try and make it up to you. He doesn't take offense to much, unless it's something absolutely heinous. His moral standing is pretty grey, and he tends to judge people by how they treat him, rather than looking at their actions at large. He's not a people-person, exactly, but he's pretty good at pretending to be one.

His parents weren't exactly trying to have another child, but they had long since come to the conclusion that any attempts to prevent such were going to be futile. At the very least, they had plenty of help raising him, between his three older sisters and myriad of family friends. His childhood was a happy one, if a bit boring for his taste, and he never missed an opportunity to try and make it more interesting. Particularly when his oldest sister Gia was around, since he liked her the best and always wanted to impress and amuse her.

They're very good at sneaking up on people. Were they taller, it would be said that they tend to loom. As it is, perhaps lurk is a better word choice. They like to eavesdrop on conversations when people aren't paying attention, and can move almost silently when they wish it.

Rather, they will ask every single question they can think of, and then every single follow-up question, before committing to much of anything. They are constantly analyzing and trying to come up with the absolute best case scenario for themself. While not typically manipulative or dishonest, they are absolutely always trying to ensure the most beneficial outcome. They will only resort to low tactics when the stakes are exceptionally high, but they aren't above doing it when they deem it necessary.

xxx»» Fred's parents aren't known for their filter, a trait that they allowed and even encouraged in their child. They did try to enforce some measure of 'time and place,' but Fred tends to ignore this edict when they think it will work out in their favor. They tend to speak their mind, and often do so with sarcasm and no small amount of condescension. It's hard for them to take things seriously when they don't respect the people involved, and they are more than happy to voice this displeasure.

They tend to keep their motivations and desires to themself, sharing only when they think opening up will get them what they want. On the other hand, her parents were lifelong goths, and 100% committed entirely to that aesthetic. They also had an agender parent, who they called "Rennie" and "Ren" growing up, and most of the people they knew were some form of LGBT+, just as goth as their parents, and often involved in things like drag shows and cabaret, or magicians. So while their upbringing was not altogether abnormal, there were certain details of it that seemed odd to other children their age.
xxx»» When they were born, they were given a "placeholder" name, which was used until they were five and chose their own name. They picked Winifred after their mother's favorite character on a very old tv she loved, mostly because it was a "girl's" name that shortened into a "boy's" name. They were also raised with gender-neutral pronouns, originally so as to not enforce a gender on them. As they grew older, they decided they liked these better, though they didn't mind girl pronouns so much. All in all, they felt very supported and loved and accepted, which their parents always figured was the important thing.
xxx»» Shortly before Fred's ninth birthday, their mother was diagnosed with cancer. It progressed rapidly, and was unresponsive to treatment. Within a few short months, she had passed away. Fred was sad, of course, but perhaps less so than most people considered healthy. Their teachers expressed concern to their Ren, worried that they weren't processing the loss. After repeated failed attempts to explain that they had processed it fine, they just had a different relationship with death than most people (especially children), Bryn decided that it would be less of a headache to home-school. This worked out fine, until they received a letter after Fred's eleventh birthday and were informed that Fred was, in fact, a wix, and would have to go to wix boarding school. But, they figured that this would be an improvement over normal school, so the news was accepted, however begrudgingly.

She's also not one for sitting still indoors; she'd rather be outside in the muck and mud, tearing holes in her jeans and getting leaves in her hair. She's not one for finicky hobbies or being dainty. She's a perfectly good person, but sometimes it's hard to tell under all the dirt.

xxx»» Growing up an only child was very lonely for Mina; as a result, she's always been incredibly social and outgoing. She's quick to make friends and to try to connect with people. Honestly, she can be a little much for some people; the word 'hyperactive' has been used more than once.

xxx»» Mina's mother worked full time, and childcare is expensive. As a result, she was taught from a very early age to be very self-sufficient. She began staying home alone for a couple hours a day when she was quite young, and her mother began gradually increasing that length of time until she was spending their full shifts by herself. She had rules, of course, which she learned to follow quite carefully. She knows how to take care of herself and to self-moderate. She's been cooking her own meals since she was five, even if sometimes that amounted to 'put cup noodle in microwave,' and she's very strict about keeping herself safe.

xxx»» Mina is not a rule-breaker, and she is not prone to misbehaving. While she sometimes gets a bit unruly, she believes that, for the most part, rules are written for a reason and should be followed. That said, she doesn't stand for injustice; "because I said so," is not a reason, and she will not accept it. If a rule is pointless, or worse, actively malicious, she will campaign against it. She believes in looking out for her peers, and will always put herself between them and something that's hurting them.

A month before she was born, he died in the line of duty, leaving his wife Charlotte a widow and new mother. Charlotte did her best to carry on, naming her daughter in honor of her late husband and moving from working part-time herself, to full time at a bank. She was able to bring her daughter to work some days, and leave her with a co-worker's wife some others, for a fee. Eventually though, she opted to begin "training" Mina to be left home alone to avoid the additional cost.
xxx»» Eventually, Mina was so self-sufficient that she could more or less go about her day without needing her mother hardly at all. She was quite skilled at entertaining herself, immersing herself in the many books of mythology and fantasy her mother, who'd once wanted to pursue writing, had collected over the years. She found the stories fascinating, particularly enamored with the tales of brave heroes facing off against vicious beasts and rescuing princesses, though she always wanted the princesses to rescue themselves. Eventually she decided that's what she was going to do; be a princess who could rescue herself, and also anybody else. That she was not, by any stretch of the imagination, a princess, was immaterial.
xxx»» She tended to keep her worries and troubles to herself, not wanting to burden her clearly stressed mother with small problems. So, when she first began noticing that things around her could be a bit... strange, she elected to keep it to herself. When things changed colors or floated or disappeared and reappeared, she didn't think it was worth concerning Charlotte with, since nothing bad was happening. This carried on for years, so her mother was quite surprised when, shortly after Mina's eleventh birthday, a man appeared at her door and told her mother that she was a witch. Charlotte was quite shocked, but Mina thought it explained a lot.

As long as he can pop down to a library and read a book, or interesting strangers to talk to about their lives and interests, he's got all he really wants out of life. His greedy nature extends only to knowledge; in all other things, all he wants is for himself and his family to be healthy and cared for.

xxx»» A secondary result of being the oldest sibling is the sense of responsibility Val feels over his two siblings, particularly Aurais, since he blames himself for his brother's accident, having been responsible for watching his siblings when it occurred. His solution? To do absolutely any- and everything for the both of them. Just about the only thing that can distract him from his voracious reading habits is either of his siblings wanting or needing something, and then he will drop everything to achieve it.

xxx»» The thing is, on the rare occasion that Val doesn't care about something, it is impossible to make him pay it any mind. He struggles a lot with things like money and investing and business because to him, those are petty concerns that stand in the way of him and learning all the things. He doesn't want to have to spend his time worrying about finances and helping run whatever his parents most recent business venture is. He wants to explore the world, meet new people, read new books, and by God, he's going to do it. Anything he doesn't care about is at best a nuisance and at worst an obstacle, and all he cares about is avoiding it.
INTUITIVE
xxx»» Being so well-read, Val knows a lot of things about a lot of different subjects. As such, he's very good at picking up nuances and understanding how things work. He rarely bothers with things like instructions because most of the time, he can figure it out well enough on his own. He's generally good at reading situations and applying problem solving skills to helping improve them. Occasionally, his 'solution' ends up being a lecture so long that both parties just cave and compromise, but he's going to stick to that being a cunning strategy and not just happenstance.

xxx»» Valerius is the firstborn of Cato Aurelis and his wife Audenzia de Luca, an Italian couple who transplanted to England shortly before their son's birth. The couple each came from old, wealthy magical families, and were, while not quite an arranged match, not quite a love match, either. They were, at least, good friends, and grew to love one another by the time they began having children. The move to England was rather impulsive, and surprised their families; Audenzia's father had died and, as she was his only child, inherited his entire fortune. She wanted to use the money to "strike out" and try her hand at business.
xxx»» Unfortunately for the family, Cato and Audenzia had expensive taste, and could uncharitably be described as "hoarders." Audenzia also had no real head for business, and Cato, being the lastborn child of five, had never been taught the ins and outs, it having been (quietly) assumed he would simply work for his eldest brother for all his life. As such, it wasn't long before the money began to run low. By the time their third child, a daughter, was born, the de Luca fortune was all but gone.
xxx»» The family tried to get on with less money, even going so far as to begin pawning off some of the expensive items the couple had bought, though not many, because neither could bear to part with most of it. Things got desperate when their middle child, Aurais, suffered the effects of a curse caused by one of the many antiques they had stashed in the attic. The curse itself caused an illness that left their son's throat badly damaged. They ended up borrowing money from family in order to cover the expenses accrued while he was healing. Unfortunately, they overshot the family's goodwill, and were eventually cut off.
xxx»» Desperate, Cato and Audenzia returned to attempting to sell and pawn off their antiques and other items, but it was (for them) an extremely difficult process. Valerius and his siblings watched as their parents struggled, not quite understanding but sympathetic and more than a little worried. They were quite surprised when, mere weeks before Val received his Hogwarts letter, the pair suddenly seemed to calm. The shopping trip for his school things was not met with fretful counting of every coin, but with wide smiles and insistence on "only the best." When Val asked, his mother simply replied she'd had some luck on her investments, which he took at face value and was relieved to hear. It was bad enough he was leaving his siblings behind; leaving them behind to suffer increasing poverty seemed like a nightmare. But, he was reassured that things would be just fine from then on out, and was able to leave for school excited to learn.

xxx»» Eddie is very good at going about unseen. He is capable of being very quiet, and additionally good at blending into the background. He's a hard person to notice when he wants to be, either because he's managed to slip into a crowd and get lost in it, or because he's fit his tiny body into an area one didn't realize a body could fit. He is also an exceptionally good liar, and great at coming up with excuses for why he was in a place he shouldn't have been, or playing oblivious when about to be scolded. It never worked on his family, of course, who taught him the tricks in the first place. But on the average Joe, it works just fine, most of the time.

xxx»» Eddie is easily excited by things like new experiences or a competition. He likes to do things, plain and simple, and will go into any and all events with full enthusiasm. He can, at times, get a little overly invested in something, and lose his head a little bit. He finds most things interesting from one angle or another, even things that some people find terribly boring. While not outwardly obvious, he genuinely enjoys life and most of the things in it. He doesn't care much for doing the same thing all the time, because there's a whole wide world out there to explore, and he wants to see every part of it.

xxx»» Being raised by thieves doesn't exactly spark a lot of generosity in a person. Eddie was taught from a very young age that the world doesn't just give you anything, you have to take it. Additionally, the sheer number of children he was constantly forced to split things between and who he caught stealing his things made him a very selfish person; he doesn't like to share, he doesn't like to give. He'll steal something before he even thinks about buying it, even if he has the money, just because if he steals it he'll have the thing and the money, and that's better. If he can help someone, he generally has to be talked into it, and the argument better involve an explanation of how it'll benefit him personally, or it's not going to work.

xxx»» Eddie has perfected the art of tunnel vision when it comes to his goals; once he sets his sights on something, it's hard to get him to look away from it. He's exceptionally stubborn, and willing to do anything it takes to get what he wants. If he can win or earn something fair and square, he's willing to put the work in just for the challenge. But, if there's even the slightest bit of doubt, he'll lie cheat steal do whatever it takes to accomplish a goal or obtain an item. If nothing else, taking the unfair route is a challenge in and of itself; he's never really liked it when people said cheating was taking the easy way out. Cheating, he thinks, is extremely difficult.

xxx»» Eddie is, as one might expect, a problem child. He never did well in school, equally because his family moved locations, and thus schools, too frequently for him to really settle into a curriculum, and because he's mistrustful of authority figures. His parents have raised him, for better or worse, to be an extremely rebellious, defiant person. It can be hard to get through to him, especially for teachers, if he's decided he doesn't care about something or dislikes how it's being taught or done. He'll deliberately cause problems in class, starting arguments or making mischief, just to waste the teacher's time. He also resorts to all manner of tricks to get other people in trouble instead of him.

xxx»» Unsurprisingly, Eddie doesn't trust many people. Even his own siblings wouldn't have hesitated to stab him in the metaphorical back if they thought it benefited them, and he's got no real illusions about how much his parents would've looked out for him once he became an adult. He's extremely hesitant to take anything at face value, and often (incorrectly) reads ulterior motives in the actions and words of everyone around him. A born liar, he's always assumed that everyone is lying, all the time, about everything. No one and nothing has ever been around long enough to prove otherwise.

xxx»» From the very beginning, Eddie's life could mostly be described as, "uncertain." For one, he's not sure who his parents are, or his siblings. He knows he has them, and that he's being raised by and alongside them, but he has no clue who they are, due to a somewhat... unconventional family structure. There were, on average, about six adults and twelve children in his immediate vicinity at all times. They all shared a surname, which Eddie is fairly sure is not the original legal surname of any of the adults. For a while, he wasn't even sure it was his original surname, matter of fact. The adults were all equally "parents" to the children, and with a couple exceptions due to obvious genetic traits, there was no telling which kids were actually whose. Rather, they orbited and shuffled around one another his whole life, with no real rhyme or reason.
»» Or, well. There is a reason. The reason is, in fact, that the adults (and the older children, who were really teens by now) were all criminals. Con artists, more specifically, though they'd dabbled in other crimes. The adults shuffled the kids around as needed, bringing along those young or old enough to help with a con if the presence of a child or baby would help. The ones who were old enough to say things but too young to know what not to say were left with a pair or so of guardians at whatever home the family occupied at the moment. The "working parents," as they called them, would be gone anywhere from a couple of weeks to months on end, assuming they didn't get busted. It had, on occasion, happened that the con went south, and the adults in question got arrested. Luckily, it never happened (at least, as far as Eddie knows) on a job involving any of the kids.
»» When he was around age six, Eddie was left alone with four of his "parents" while the others were on a job. No kids were taken, and the house they'd been staying in at the time was on the small side due to a "drier season," as one mother had put it. As such, it was easy to feel crowded. Eddie was absolutely desperate to get away from his siblings. At one point, he tricked the kids he shared a room with into going downstairs, claiming their parents needed them for something. Upon their leaving, he closed and locked the door, then refused to open it when they returned. The parents attempted to unlock it with a key, but the key suddenly became quite hot, causing mild burns to the father who held it. They then attempted to break through the door, but it quite literally bounced them back. Nothing could seemingly get the door open, until at suppertime that night, when it seemingly miraculously opened all on its own.
»» From that point on, odd things occurred around Eddie somewhat frequently. Nothing too ostentatious, most easily explainable with a little stretching of physics and willful ignoring of certain details. The parents were even happy to bring him along on jobs, since those strange happenings always seemed to be in Eddie's, and therefore their own, favor. But, when Eddie's eleventh birthday heralded the arrival of a rather posh older man and claims of magic, the two parents who'd introduced themselves thought it explained an awful lot. The rest of the family had hidden away, a common practice among the group to appear on the outside as a normal family when visitors came by, and missed the specifics. But, once they were filled in, they weren't about to argue with a magical kid. After all, think of the crimes he could commit. So, they all agreed they were more than happy to send Eddie off to Hogwarts, to learn how to become a proper wizard.
»» Unfortunately, shortly after this visit, the authorities somehow managed to find and arrest Eddie's "parents," as well as the couple of older kids passed the age of majority. The children, for the most part, were sent into foster care. All except Eddie, who'd been shipped off to an orphanage, of all things, in London. The owners, he was told, along with most of the children, were all magical as well. He was told that, if the parents who appeared on his birth certificate were to be found innocent, or released from prison prior to his turning 17, he would be returned to their care. But, in the meantime, Wool's would be his home on holidays, and Hogwarts during the school year. Eddie simply nodded along, putting on just enough of a sad face to convince everyone that he understood but wouldn't be any trouble. He was, after all, a con artist.
