“Hold still, for Serin’s sake!”
The radaku was not feeling particularly cooperative today. It wasn’t out of any spite -- Shenandoah was simply confused and curious about what was going on, and kept trying to spin around so that he could see better what it was that Ouen was doing. Ouen, however, couldn’t do what he was doing with an animal that kept ending up twisted around and sideways.
“Ugh, Shen! Quit it!”
The radaku was getting near big enough for him to ride -- but Ouen had never tried, given the fact that he himself was getting bigger (and putting on muscle). Still, he had decided that it was about time to start getting the beast ready for the job, and according to some of the beast tamers he’d spoken to, the first step was to get him used to saddles and things of that sort on his back.
For the time-being, he had decided to experiment with some simple saddlebags. It wasn’t like he had a lot to tote about, but, well, it couldn’t hurt to have Shen do some of the work, right?
Except that it was taking so goddamn long just to buckle the bags on that he was starting to think maybe it wasn’t worth the effort.
“Will ya stop? It ain’t that excitin’. Look, ‘s just some leather bits an’ buckles. They ain’t for eatin’.”
Duke Edward Drake location is up to you -- jauhar, tale, or oba is fine, wherever your little guy is likely to be. 83

Arron rooted around in the undergrowth he had since gotten tired of climbing trees, he rather blamed falling on his butt too much and so had decided to cruise around looking at the multitude of bugs that lived here and that had kept him rather busy until he had found the foot prints. He looked around with shifty eyes, they were large and padded it looked like a great wild beast. Well if his mother could hunt them so could he, he could be a beast rangler or wrestler or rider..so many cool options. He crawled off after the foot prints and was delighted to find they belonged to a handsome radaku however it seemed to be attatched to a tall man already. Oh well, not his new critter then..on the plus side this one probably wouldn't eat him. Arron coughed from the shadows trying to get their attention without being ostentacious about it. He watched patiently waiting for the interesting saddle bag dance to end..did they do that often in Jauhar?

Some time later, the radaku finally stilled long enough for Ouen to do his work. He slid the straps through the buckles and tightened them just well enough to be snug -- or what he thought was snug, at least. There was no telling if the bags would stay on or slip off against the sleek surface of the radaku’s fur, not until they tried running and jumping and doing all the sorts of things they normally did.
It was only after he had finished putting on the bags that he realised why exactly Shenandoah was standing still. He had noticed something, it seemed, by the attentive look on his face. It couldn’t have been anything threatening, since the beast wasn’t hunching down on his paws or baring his teeth, though.
“What’s that?” The shifter looked up, gazing up just as a small cough came from the shadows of the undergrowth.
It was a youngling -- with big dark eyes and hair, tan skin like a leaf.
“Hey, you.” He quirked a silvery eyebrow, grinning casually. “What sorta critter are you?”

Arron pursed his lips, "A complicated one," he said after some thought. The pair were infinitely interesting, a tall fuzzy shifter and a pretty radaku. He kinda thought he liked radaku, not as much as the family he was staying with but well he had been born in Sauti not Jauhar, so perhaps that could be excused..oh and he had no shifter blood to speak of that might have something to do with it too. "My name is Arron, who is that?" He nodded at the radaku, also hoping that the shifter would provide his own name. He wasn't sure he wanted to stay and talk, that man was awfully tall and lanky. He could be dangerous..of course he should probably be more afraid of the radaku but wasn't oddly. But at least the smile was reasurring. "What are you doing?" He tilted his head inquiringly.

The youngling seemed to be an unusually thoughtful one -- he took a bit of time to answer, and when he did his eyes glimmered with an unexpected sort of intelligence. Ouen, at his age, certainly wouldn’t have pulled anything like that off.
“Complicated? Well, that’s good ‘nough for me. Don’t mean no offense by it, just that y’don’t look like… well, like anyone really.”
He shrugged loosely, watching as Shenandoah stepped forward to nose at the little guy. There was a time, Ouen remembered, when they would have been just about the same size… but now the radaku towered well over him, and had to lower his snout to get a good sniff at the boy’s hair.
“I’m Ouen. This ‘ere is Shenandoah, Shen fer short. We’re, uh… trainin’. I think. I ain’t really no beast-tamer or anythin’, but, uh, I done seen some work an’ this supposed to be a way to get ‘em used to carryin’ a weight on their backs an’ the like. He ain’t so big yet that I can ride ‘im, but I figure we’s can get started with lighter things.”

"Well, um thats because I'm a hybrid," Arron said shyly. Boy this shifter was blunt, it was kind of refreshing actually. He felt a little embarrassed explaining his appearance to someone who seemed to have only one kind of earthling in him. "I'm half leaf, he gestured to the pink crystals, "A quarter alk," he gestured to his eyes, "And a quarter iceling," he pointed at his hair. Arron, shied a little from the radaku but put out a hand in greeting while leaning the rest of his body away from the giant maw. He was not convinced this was a puppy of any sort. It was huge. "My name is Arron." "Using packsacks makes sense, better then just hopping on I'm sure, of course he must trust you very much to begin with to let you get that close." Arron stroked the soft fur and slowly relaxed his posture, this radaku wasn't so bad. "So you have a spear, you going to be a rider or a melee hunter or what not?"

Once again, Ouen was surprised by the precision of the boy’s answer -- three races in one, huh? That was something. He didn’t even know you could be part alkidike; as far as he had heard, the alkidikes were all girls, and they got their alkidike babies from a tree or… something like that. Anyway, he didn’t exactly doubt the boy. He had dark eyes and the thick, small eyebrows that alkidikes had, and that was good enough proof for him.
“Y’know, I sure don’t think I ever did met anyone else who’s three things all at once, not ‘till today. That’s gotta be special.”
Shenandoah didn’t seem to care one way or the other, nudging his face into Arron’s small hand when he first hesitated. Having been raised by a shifter since birth, the creature often forgot that some people might consider him to be threatening even when he wasn’t baring his teeth and snarling.
“Thass the plan.” Ouen nodded, hefting his lance. “I’ll ride ‘im once he’s big ‘nough. You ever ride a radaku? I did once, when I was a prentice. Man, it was somethin’. Like wind through the trees, y’know. I heard they got faster critters over in Oba, these big things like birds, but I betcha they can’t move as nimble as a radaku.”
