It was early evening when ten dragons appeared above High Reaches Weyr in perfect synchrony and in perfect formation; it was one of Second Wing's squads, back from their day's work and spiralling down towards the bowl.

When they landed the wingsecond who led them gave the debrief down near the Weyr's lake; a circle of dragons kept spectators from hearing what was said but the tone of voices sounded positive and there were a few bursts of rough laughter. After a few minutes the circle of dragons broke and the riders split off naturally in social groups of a four, a three, and a pair as they headed off to find their evening's food and entertainment.

The wingsecond however remained with his dragon, removing the sleek blue's straps and dumping them on the ground before heading to the edge of the lake to fill a bucket that had apparent been set out ready for him, alongside a sack of indeterminate contents.

Shiloh, on of her days off, had spent the day observing the Riders of the Weyr with Lyrieth, the two of them lounging in the sun or cozying up to inquisitive Weyrfolk - some were still shy, but many were coming around to the blue, surprised at his positive adorableness and his extremely sweet demeanor. Belly rubs were a bit of a joke now, thankfully, and he'd made a game of it with some Weyrbrats, hoping to catch their gratitude and influence their opinion of him in a positive light for future use.

Thus, when Second Wing finally returned at it was the squad they were looking for, Lyrieth thrummed pleasantly, leaning against his rider. He'd grown quite a bit in the intervening days and though his skin itched frequently, he was healthy as could be hoped for. I told you laying out the bucket would be a good idea. Don't need to let him know it was us, but just the same. Lyrieth's musical voice was smug as it coiled around Shiloh's mind.

She smiled and rubbed the top of his head, "Indeed."

Rising, they meandered across the field before stopping a respectful distance away. Shiloh looked up at C'tis' blue with curiosity, something akin to pride swelling in her breast as she considered what her brilliant Lyrieth would become. "Sir...? Do you have a moment?"

They'd tried gathering information about the Camping debacle but not much beyond juicy rumors had be available. It was time to speak to someone higher up... and that Lyrieth and Shiloh were aiming for one of the first two wings when they graduated made C'tis a natural choice - bluerider, present at the camping trouble, and wingsecond. They'd just have to play him right.

"Hu?" C'tis looked around and down at the pair before him, he was in a good enough mood right now and the tones used were suitably respectful so his initial expression was neutral rather than one of his classic dark scowls. Then he took in their identity and his scarred face split with a slow grin. "Ahhh, it's you; did you get the taste of Z'fer's leg out of your mouth yet young blue? Can't have been a very nice first meal." The hatchling seemed calm now; C'tis assumed he only got bitey when he was threatened which was much better than some loose ballista that fired off at the drop of a hat.

Somewhere in the back of his head Malcarreth laughed; he ignored him.

"Yes, I've got time while I wash Malcarreth down; what do you need rider? Oh, and your names?" While he waited for a response C'tis opened the bag of supplies - taken from his weyr earlier - and took out a scrubbing brush which he dipped into a large pot of soapsand, then into the water, and started work on scrubbing Malcarreth's hide where his harness went.

Lyrieth grinned at the comment, a mouth full of sharp teeth revealed, and ruffled his wings. I have, thankfully. The laughter in his voice made Shiloh grin as she patted his head, "He says he has, thankfully."

She seemed pleased to garner a moment of his time and dipped her in thanks and respect as she replied, "Oh! We're Lyrieth and Shiloh, sir. Hopefuls to your Wing, actually, and that's what I was hoping to talk to you about - do you have any advice for us?" They'd thrown themselves into their studies since the Hatching and Shiloh rather hoped Lyrieth's initial infamy and their hard work had circulated enough to tickle at the First and Second Wings' ears.

"I was at the Candidate Camp when the Holdless hit us... and when I saw it was Second Wing that responded, well, it was enough inspiration to learn what it takes." She glanced at her dragon then back at C'tis, "You've overcome the ridiculous colour versus skill aspect of politics and I was hoping you'd perhaps offer some mentorship."

You can ease up, Mine... don't overdo it at the outset. The blue sat a little to the front of Shiloh, obviously in a protective, if not possessive, posture.

Second Wing hopefuls eh? C'tis paused mid-scrub and turned to give the pair another look over. Well the girl presumably wouldn't be precious about her appearance; you didn't stay unscarred for long in Second Wing so being scarred to begin with was a plus so far as he saw it.

"We have," C'tis acknowledged after a short pause, "good to know others are planning to as well, it can be a real shiny fest in wing HQ." He appreciated that she was direct about her ambitions as well, though he wasn't yet sure what to make of her request. What would he get out of such an arrangement? It could be kind of amusing to agree he supposed, simply so he could keep saying to Z'fer things like: 'Oh you remember that hatchling you provoked into attacking you? I have to go and meet him now to mentor him to enter our wing.' Entertaining though that would be taking on a protégé of sorts was a lot to commit to, even assuming she would do chores and so on for him in exchange.

"Mentorship?" he said aloud with a small raise of his brows. "Well I can offer you some advice, but if you meant a more formal arrangement that's something I'd have to think about.

"What it takes though, well you'll need to really shine in combat for a start," C'tis continued, advice cost him nothing and he was happy to give it to a fellow blue rider. "You don't have to be a natural, you just have to graft harder than the rest. If you're not top of your class work on getting there; put in extra hours wherever you can and train against as many different people as you can, being able to win a bout against another weyrling who's been taught the same way as you is all well and good but you'll need more for a career in a combat wing. You can't work on that until Lyrieth is a bit older of course but keep it in mind and watch the combat wing riders practice when you can, you can pick up some wonderfully dirty tricks that way.

"Next you need connections; when there's a cut to be made between two equally able pairs it's going to come down to the hide of your dragon and who you know. Sad but true. Malcarreth and I started in Third Wing because we didn't play the game well, took us turns to prove ourselves and work up to where we could have started if he were bronze or even brown and I'd known the right people...." C'tis paused, gave a snort of amusement and shrugged. "Make that: if I'd made connections with the right people rather than pissing them off." There was more to be said of course but he'd given Shiloh a few things to digest and he wanted to see how she reacted to them before he went on.

Well, well... this one is full of information... and he's open to more formal arrangements... we should request combat training then, to spar with him and watch his wing work. What should we offer though... The blue thrummed thoughtfully, obviously considering the implications of C'tis' comments while inwardly scheming to get the most of out the man while offering the least. After a moment, the blue settled quietly, Offer him eyes and ears, knowledge, and assistance with his chores when you're not in lessons.

Shiloh had been listening attentively, nodding at key points. When he was finished, she replied, "I've redoubled my efforts in class - the Camping trip was a cold, hard reminder of the use of self defense. Ended up sticking one of them with a sedative-laced needle but that won't always save me. Would you allow us to watch your Wing sparring then? Perhaps some private lessons."

At the advice to make connections, she grinned, "I fully understand that aspect..." A blue flit appeared out of thin air then and settled on her shoulder as if summoned, "Connections prove particularly helpful. This is Gawk. Between the three of us, I'm sure we can offer something of use to you - assistance in equipment upkeep maybe? Or an extra pair of eyes and ears when you need it." She was nonchalant as she spoke and she felt the pride swell in Lyrieth at her smoothness, "You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours - and we'll remember it when the metallic ceiling is broken."

C'tis chuckled softly, a lopsided grin tugging at his lips. "Well you've certainly got balls... metaphorically speaking, unless you keep some pickled in a jar under your bed?" She wasn't really offering anything he couldn't get from a squire so far, though smart eyes and ears nobody expected to be paying attention could be useful and weren't guaranteed to be found in a squire. C'tis was under no illusions about the stability of his current position; if O'ail went down with all the s**t that was going on it was impossible to say what would happen, and if Shiloh happened to be good at picking up handy information it could be of use to him.

A sharp crack of a creature betweening announced the arrival of another blue firelizard; this one was periwinkle blue and rather easily scarred. He landed on C'tis shoulders and perched there like a malevolent gargoyle. "This is Fang. They're useful little bastards are firelizards," C'tis continued with a nod to the little beast, "not only as messengers or extra eyes either, they don't mind about hurting humans and a jet of fire to the face often offends. A clever mind can use a firelizard to their advantage in all sorts of ways most people don't expect, because most people essentially keep them as pampered status symbols."

What to do though? C'tis pondered as he scrubbed at Malcarreth's hide; again, she wasn't offering anything special - unless she turned out to really stellar at gathering handy information - but he found himself quite liking the bold young woman's... well, boldness. "You're welcome to watch us drill, Malcarreth will let Lyrieth know when we're going to have a session and you can come down if you're free.... And once you're back at weapons training I suppose you could stay on after the wing finishes and have a couple of rounds with me, and afterwards we can talk about what eyes and ears might pick up. I think we should get to know one another a little before I make any more formal promises than that though."

Shiloh laughed and shrugged, "Give us a fortnight to prove ourselves. I'll have another firelizard by then, also free, and you can judge from that whether Lyrieth and I are good for gathering intel and favours." She pet Gawk as Lyrieth sounded his approval in her mind. He wasn't sure quite yet how to play this human but Shiloh was reading him quite well. "I prefer the Green or Blue simply because much larger and people take notice... too easy to link back to an owner."

At the mention of Malcarreth contacting Lyrieth after drills, Lyrieth bowed a bit in thanks. I look forward to training with Mine. I will contact you directly if we learn things of an interesting nature. The young blue's voice was musical, sweet, seductive with just enough respect to avoid sounding arrogant as he bespoke the older blue.

Shiloh nodded, "That's fine with me, I'll prove we're a good bet." She held out a hand for a shake, smiling, "But know, Lyrieth and I will break that ceiling regardless of if you help or not. It's simply a matter of who we consider allies in the end."

<> Malcarreth mused in faintly amused tones.

C'tis' eyebrows raised a little. <> It was too peculiar to get angry about.... For now. "Well I'm glad you're confident, and I look forward to seeing that new firelizard then," he replied; it seemed unlikely that she'd manage that but who knew? Weirder things had possibly happened.

Malcarreth gave a small rumble of approval and nodded in response to Lyrieth. <>
