Nersha groaned and dragged a hand down her face. There was no challenging her. Over half a dozen dragons in the infirmary to some degree and she was positively ecstatic with the result. She had gotten exactly what she wanted. The dragons had fought, one had emerged victorious and Sereth was confident that she already had a clutch of warriors growing inside her.

Still Nersha could feel the exhaustion in her dragon. The wound was ugly and it hurt now that the thrill of the flight had ended. Her wings ached and every now and then was a headrush, but Sereth still managed to stride (with a bit of a limp) into the infirmary just as Nersha sped through the entrance from the hallways, refusing to let Sereth come to her before getting medical attention.

And here came the woman of the hour, dragon of the hour rather. She was walking at least, that was a good start even if she was limping. Bereck finished scrubbing his hands and forearms for the umpteenth time that day and hastened over, his stride hitching more than usual without his cane in his hand.

He hadn't got very far when somebody raced past him. Naturally his first instinct was to reprimand whoever it was for running in his infirmary (alright, Amarid's infirmary) but he took note of who it was just as he opened his mouth and under the circumstances amended to; "Careful! The floor's slippery." Much as he understood Nersha's desire to reach her dragon safety still had to be considered, there had been a lot of sluicing down going on over the last... well, however long it had been since the first victim of the flight crashlanded.

"Oh, sorry, Bereck." Nersha glanced back and then down at the floor, getting her speed under control. Of course the floor would have been clean. Sereth was going to be one of the last one's in and she imagined Bereck had already had to patch up and send on some of her suitors.

She reached Sereth and the dragon lowered her head, rumbling a greeting and nuzzling the human's torso as she lowered herself to the floor. Nersha's eyes drifted over the rake marks in Sereth's side. Even if her dragon wasn't sorry, she was. Thread was falling, they didn't need things like this happening. She looked over at Bereck approaching, a sad expression on her face. "I'm sorry, Bereck. You didn't need this on top of everything else."

Always had to have the last word.

Bereck sighed slightly and shook his head. "No I didn't," he said without rancor. "These things happen during flights though I'll admit not usually quite so... impressively." Impressive wasn't the right word but he liked Nersha and so 'disastrously' remained unsaid and he offered the other rider a small smile. "Still, let's take a look at the damage shall we?" The wounds looked very unpleasant from here. "Why would any dragon think it a good idea to strike at a gold in flight?" the healer muttered to nobody in particular.

Nersha's mouth tightened at the thought of the green. She understood why to an extent, Sereth had struck her first, but this was a mating flight. What if Sereth had been severly injured? She could have been forced to drop out of the flight and then the Weyr would get no clutch from her. Or worse, what if the wound had damaged her wing? She could have been rendered flightless!

She did. To Sereth's credit she had always acted this way and Nersha had to believe that at least some of her confidence was earned. More than a little anxious, Nersha watched Bereck as she ran hands over Sereth's head, just to keep busy. Sereth made a point to stay still for the healer. Even though she viewed this whole thing as necessary, she didn't have to make it more difficult for him now that it was over.

"How's she looking?" Hopefully it'd be a easy enough patch-up, but Nersha say a lot of Sereth-care in her near future.

Bereck inspected the wounds and made a thoughtful noise at the back of his throat. They are talon wounds, he thought. Talons are invariably filthy compared to for instance a nice clean sword wound - provided the sword hasn't been deliberately fouled to cause infection and that's the concern. He knew that Nersha knew all about that though and so there was no point saying it, was there? It was specifics Nersha wanted, not 'and do remember to worry about this thing as well'.

"I'll need to do some sutures," Bereck began after a short pause, turning from his inspection of the wounds to address woman and dragon. "You'll be grounded for a while, Sereth, but with proper care," and luck, "you'll be none the worse for it. The sooner it's done the better of course so, ah, good." Bereck nodded to the apprentice who had just appeared with supplies for cleaning, sewing and dressing the injury. "I'll numb it first, alright?" he said as he reached for the numbweed, glancing to the pair once again for permission before he actually started.

She had expected the need for sutures, those could be taken care of. So long as there was no lasting damage everything would be fine. In the rush of the flight it would have been so easy for Sereth to foolishly over-exert herself and damage some part beyond repair.

"Lucky we already live on ground level," Nersha managed with a slight smile. "Do you think the hide will have healed over by the time her clutch arrives?" Nersha didn't much like the idea of trying to keep the sand out of a still open wound while she tended to her eggs. Fortunately, due to the choice of Regulith Nersha was less concerned about Sereth becoming egg-bound now. Of course people could say that her body would adjust it for her, but that didn't stop her worries. Now she just had to worry about whether the long trip between had done anything.

Sereth and Nersha both nodded, Sereth rumbling slightly, in agreement to the numbing. She'd known this part was coming and she was willing to take it. Her clutch was worth the blood of the flight and any pain she should feel now or later.

"Mmh, quite! And yes, well before then," Bereck said as he numbed and then started to cleanse the wounds. "With wounds this size, mmh, I would expect it to take... maybe ten days to fourteen days for them to close over properly. After that maybe another couple of sevendays to heal to scars, that's what I would consider average. These wounds are quite deep however so you two will need to work on building strength back up again for some time after that... so given the timings probably after you've clutched, Sereth."

The above was of course assuming all went well, and that went for all of today's casualties. He wished Sereth hadn't done it. They couldn't afford to lose any dragons to needless wounds and no rider could afford to lose their lifemate, he'd done his best but that was no guarantee that everything would be alright in the end. Still, he could do no more and so there was little point worrying about it.

"Right so you're to take it easy until after the clutch, alright?" Nersha said allowed and received the mental equivalent of an eye roll from the dragon. Hearing that Sereth wasn't permanently injured lifted her spirits. So did the fact that the dragon herself seemed not too shaken up by the whole process. "Not that that will likely be a change though," Nersha attempted to joke with the healer. Golds did get an easier ride than any other colour it was true.

Her smile dimmed a little. "So... Is there anyone I should be seeking out to make a formal apology to?" The flight'd been bloody and although to her knowledge no dragon had been rescued as they flew back down, she still worried someone had been badly damaged. The rider probably wouldn't want to see her if that was the case, but she'd try anyhow. Better to try and be rejected than not bother, their dragon's life meant that much and more.

Ah Nersha, she worried too much about what people thought... or on the other hand perhaps she worried exactly the right amount. He'd never cared what people thought of him so long as they respected his work but his position was very different to hers and he had to recognize that, couldn't expect her to live like he did. She was a woman out of time and place and in some ways she always would be no matter how well she settled into her new life, and people's opinions... well they had more power to affect her life than they did to affect his.

In light of this Bereck gave Nersha a small smile instead of saying something brisk and derisive about the people who might whine about their dragons. "No, nobody Nersha and don't allow anyone to tell you otherwise! All of those males - and females come to that - acted of their own free will. If they don't like the consequences of their actions that's their own outlook. Sereth may have given them a taste of her talons," he nodded to the gold, "but it is they who chose to tear one another apart, it may have been by her word but they are all adults and were not compelled. It isn't your fault, and all of them should be fine given a bit of time and rest." Second wing was without its two wingseconds for now but so far as he saw it First could step in and live up to that big name they liked to wave around the place.

"Ah, and Sereth can join Berath in taking it easy perhaps?" Bereck added belatedly with a wry crook of his lips as he remembered the light jest Nersha had made. "Maybe they can start a club. Perhaps we should too."

Running her fingers gently over Sereth's face as the tiny gold accepted her treatment, Nersha smiled to herself. There were times she envied Bereck. The man seemed to know exactly what he was and where he fit, while she constantly second-guessed and worried over what she was supposed to be. How she wished she could easily see this as not her fault, even equal theirs and hers. She couldn't though. It was the Weyrmistress' duty to protect her Weyr, even from her own dragon if need be. Weyrmistress may just be a title in this time, not even a title she held, yet for twenty turns Nersha had been told this one rule. Her most important task. To protect her Weyr.

Nersha's smile faded as she turned her head to look at Sereth to see the dragon's eyes focused on her face. The statement stood alone in the gold's mind, unshakable and solid as iron. This was not theirs. They could stay as long as Nersha wished, but it was not theirs. Sereth knew it in her heart. She had no fair. There were other dragons here, some she would even claim to be acquaintance or even pleasant with, but they were few and had their own places in this different order. They may interact with her, but they were Evmeth's fair.

No explanation was given, she chose not to elaborate, what needed to be said had been said. Sereth's eyes swivelled away from Nersha back to Bereck, Nersha following her gaze to also look at the healer. The woman managed a light laugh, though nerves shook it. "I'm sure she'd be glad the company." Even as Nersha put on her pleasant face, fear churned in her stomach at what she glimpsed in the dragon's mind.
