Settlements**~~~~~~~~Mavering“A place which had once been a sight of grandiose beauty, and perhaps still was, in the way of being a perfect reflection of its current inhabitants. Ruined. Vacant. Forgotten.”A settlement located along the Northern shores of the Sontiar Straight, Mavering is the most relevant of the port towns in the North, though it is nothing but the ruins of a once-great trading hub. Many who visit for the first time remark that it appears at first to be abandoned, though each and every door hides a tradesman of some kind.
The layout consists of a vast, circular arcade that opens to the sea with an open courtyard in the center, empty of everything but a blanket of old leaves and vegetation and a heavily weather-beaten, unrecognizable figure carved in stone in the middle. Only the ground floors of the three-story-high structure remain accessible, due to the crumbling nature of the site. The once-defensible stone walls are now completely collapsed in some spots, and there are no guards posted through the town, as there is no form of direct government to fund it. The town’s reputation for being as dangerous as the wilds themselves is partly attributable to this fact, but the other contributing factor is that the town is located very close to the dumping grounds for Imperial prisoners. This attracts predatory individuals who are looking to take advantage of the dead and weak, either to harvest them or take the living as slaves. This is also why beasts prowl in and around Mavering at night, as they look to feed off the newly dumped prisoner bodies.
Just outside the walls of Mavering lies a misty, barren, rocky shoreline, with scraggly root ends protruding from the sand and patches of vegetation sprouting near some of the larger boulder formations that sink deep in the loose floor. Beyond this shore and well within sight of Mavering is the tree-line that leads into the thick forest of coniferous trees and long hanging moss, appearing as a green veil between the remains of civilization and the dark nest where beasts makes their homes. Only one reliable road leads from Mavering deeper into the rest of the North. All others are narrow and overgrown, allowing only light foot traffic by small bands of hardened travelers.
Five docks of various sizes, newly constructed, branch out from a wooden walkway that leads directly to town. The town holds upwards of three dozen shops hidden behind the walls within the colonnade, and one could find such items as raw seafood, alchemical reagents, newspapers and periodicals from the South, potions for the plague, travelling equipment, and even slaves, among other goods.
Also worth noting is the curious lack of an inn or tavern. Mavering is not a town to linger within.
