Suluksati rarely had days this nice. Normally, her days were full of pain and tragedy, her personal duty and quest unrequited but still holding firm despite the dissappointment and the dragon blood that so often-too often- was shed. Some days she went hungry, some days she was badly injured, and there was of course the terrifying time spent in Soldul during the blood moon- not her best decision, by far.

But today was one of those special rare days when quiet and peace reigned. Prey had been plentiful and she was full. She had preened and sunned and felt properly clean for the first time in she had no idea how long.

And, to top it off, she had found a most remarkable thing in the woods- a baby Ysali dragon, playing alone in a vibrant meadow. She could smell its lair near enough for her to not worry too much about the little thing playing happily- while not being near enough to have to worry about being ambushed by its mother, which- while it would be a testament to it's mother's protective nature- might also result in the death of a dragon, and Sulu had no desire to ruin her day- and the little one's day- with dragons blood. Enough days were stained with that already.

Instead, she settled in to watch the dragon play. If something happened, she could defend it. If nothing happened, that would be fine too. She was happy to simply watch as the little, still-awkward creature batted and played with the grasses and flowers around it, flapping its little wings and growling with delight and innocence.

Ekundayo had finally met her parents, they were looking for a home to move in together and the future looked brighter and brighter for Esmeralda. Today looked like it was going to be one of those glorious days and really the Peisio Dovaa wanted to stretch out her wings and just relax. She’s also graduated which was always a notch on her belt of ever growing life achievements. She’d considered becoming a master but that was for… later. She wanted to focus on the here and now as well as her future because now she wanted to enjoy life to its fullest.

The meadow she stumbled upon now was already occupied, Esmeralda spied two dragons but of different species. A Ysali and the other… She couldn’t tell which clan it was from. Curious, the Dovaa moved closer noting the size of the Ysali and knowing it was only a baby. Not that she would have attacked it, which would go against everything she stood for. “Greetings.” Esme called out, waving a little and twitching her wings. Hopefully she didn’t look menacing, she didn’t carry any weapons on her and she was in a dress so really there was nothing to worry about for them. For her though, they might decide to attack her and she’d have to run.

Perhaps into bushes?

The baby dragon startled at the voice, and with a hop, a yip of surprise, and a toddlerlike outpouring of magic that made the plants around it grow to twice their height, it ran off - cheeping, back towards where its mother laired.

Sulu had always had a hard time hiding with her bright white feathers. She'd managed to keep herself hidden from the baby dragon's senses, but she still stood out among the shaded, golden undergrowth.

Having no reason to hide, she gave up the game and stood up, tail waving. "Hello." she replied. It was a Dovaa, pale in color and blue of scale. A peisio, if her magical sense was correct. She strode over, trying to appear as nonthreatening as she could. That the Dovaa had called - apparently to her, as she could see the magescan looking at her - when there was a baby dragon about implied that she hadn't been hunting the dragon, which was a good sign. She wished that the dragon hadn't been startled, but startled was better than dead.

"We should move." said Suluksati, looking back towards the dragon's lair, "Its mother will be here soon." she did not want to confront a dragon, not if she could help it.

Blinking the Peisio Dovaa starred where the baby had been and her eyes followed it all the way home. Well then. That had been slightly… Unexpected. Granted her kind was usually unmerciful when they found a dragon to kill, they loved their sport of collecting orbs after all. It was all too sad for Esmeralda, it would have been so much easier if she could approach the dragons to study them. Maybe one day, though one could certainly dream she knew no one would ever stop hurting the dragons. One could dream right? Esmeralda turned towards the approaching Khehora.

When the feathered Khehora spoke to her she nodded in agreement. Ysali were sometimes viewed as pests because of how numerous they were. Where one was another was soon to follow and so on. “Yes, we shouldn’t linger.” Esmeralda cast one last glance in the direction of where the baby Ysali had run off to before walking towards the forest again. “I didn’t think it would run to be honest.” Lord knew how many times she’d seen plenty of people get hurt even by the smallest of dragons. Though it had probably run of to fetch some more Ysali. “Not sure where to go to relax now.

"Sometimes..." Suluksati rumbled softly, Slowing her pace somewhat to walk alongside - not too slow, of course. "The little ones don't run. Sometimes they talk, or even play." she sighed, sadly, "this one must have been... a smart one." or well trained. Or wise beyond its years. Poor baby.

"The Peisio's territory ends around there..." she gestured with her nose, "And his mother is not likely to find us under that rock."

The stone ahead jutted, gleamingly white, from the ground amid a clearing of the shimmering golden trees. It was a nice rock to sun on, or lie under. "It is quite clean and cool." she reassured the Dovaa, "I would like to talk to you... you were not hunting the dragon, correct?" That itself was incredibly fascinating, and Suluksati hoped she was correct.

“Well you are lucky than, none has ever spoken or played with me.” But she was a large odd creature on two legs whose family hunted the dragons down, it couldn’t be helped. Esmeralda sighed softly, wondering if when she received her dragon form she would be able to approach the dragons much more easily. She’d be cautious of course, but she was curious and she’d have to try it out. “Smart indeed, good instincts.” She murmured, if it had been anyone else they would have brought hell down upon the young dragon and then probably hunt out its mother.

“Oh good, as long as we are safe and free.” Esmeralda followed the Khehora to the rock, she’d thought about leaving once they were safe but her question caught her off guard. The Dovaa cast a side glance and blinked. “I do not hunt the dragons, that is correct,” she said slowly, wondering what the Khehora would want to talk about. It was the first time a Khehora had wanted to talk to her and not the other way around, maybe she’d let Esme draw her while they spoke. She was quite pretty and Esme would love to be able to bring back something for Minerva.

"I was very lucky." she agreed, "I would rather play with them than fight their parents" she settled in nearby to watch her. She was a very pretty dovaa, as dovaa went, a being of white, black, and blue. She smelled of water magic and her eyes were blue, marking her as a Peisio dovaa.

"The hunts are such a waste of life..." she murmured, "It is good to see at least one other person who agrees." she stretched out her wings and rearranged them - she would need to preen soon. She needed to preen frequently to keep her brilliant white feathers in prime, clean condition.

But perhaps she was presuming. "Do you agree?" she asked, swishing her tail at the spring insects that sought to make a meal of her, "Perhaps I should have asked that first..." and then she remembered another thing she had forgotten in the hurry.

"Ah. My manners. My name is Suluksati. My clan is Aedaun, the clan of light. I have no tribe or kin that will claim me as such, I don't think." she watched Esme intently with umber, slitted eyes, "Is my interest in your thoughts on the dragons strange?" she asked, "Do you find my opinion strange as well?"

“Me too.” Esmeralda said under her breath only loud enough for her to hear. Though she had never had any baby dragons play with her which was probably attributed by the fact that everyone killed dragons for fun and power. The thought made her sigh softly before she spotted a nice tree to lean up against. Esmeralda settled herself on the ground close to the Khehora and watched her quietly. She was as pretty as they went for her kind, the Peisio Dovaa seemed to have a preference for the feathered kind instead of the others. Made them seem more graceful, more beautiful in her mind.

“Don’t worry about it.” Esmeralda shrugged. “Hunts are a waste of life yes, and yet my people need the Dragon souls to choose a clan.” She of course, didn’t agree with all the killing and such. “My whole life I have studied Dragons while everyone else hunts them.” Her own husband and daughter certainly did. “It is sad.” What a gloomy subject to talk about or maybe she was just a bit tired and depressed. “Esmeralda, Peisio by choice.” The Dovaa offered her a smile and a chuckle. “It is nice to meet you Suluksati.”

“Your interest is not strange, many wonder what my thoughts on the dragons are. Rarely do I share.” Rare as in never. “May I draw you?” It was an odd request, but Esmeralda was itching to draw and Sulu made for the best subject here right now.

"Draw me?" Suluksati said, surprised, her crest rising in surprise, "As in... art?" she knew what art was, and she had seen some examples of it here and there, "I would be honored..." she murmured, arranging herself vainly.

"Surely there is a way to make the orbs unnecessary?" she murmured, thoughtful. Hopeful, too. For once, her opinion was not brushed away as silly or insane... but shared. Was this the hope she sought? "I have never met another person..." she said, honestly, "That agreed with me on this. I have been told, often, that it is a foolish opinion." she said, "Or by kinder souls..." metaphorically, of course, in young Raemos's case, "that it is inevitable and necessary to hunt them."

She murmured, a sound that came from deep in her chest. "But you study them..." she looked at Esmeralda quietly for a moment. "I protect them, or I try to protect them." she watched Esme's reaction carefully, "I wish to defend dragonkind from the depredations of those who would hunt them..." she sighed, "It has been a lonely road."

Esmeralda’s smile grew very large and she went digging for her art pad excitedly. Unfolding it, she found a blank page and then went to search for some charcoal. Her eyes glanced up and down Sulu before she began to sketch, but her eyes were constantly going from her paper to Sulu to make sure her proportions were right. She was working on a head shot before she’d move to do the Khehora in full body. How long since she’d had a chance to draw a subject? Too long, she ought to be doing it more often than not.

“If there is one, I do not know of it.” Surely Marcus would have utilized a process that did not require any dragon orbs. Then again they absorbed the magic within, so perhaps it could not be helped. Though she did not want to share this, Esmeralda didn’t know if it was common knowledge or not. “All I can think of right now is if there was a way to do it; I want to think our leader would use it.” But again, she didn’t think it would be possible at all. Or maybe no one had actually asked if there was a way...

The Dovaa chuckled. “Me neither. They all give the same reply.” Esmeralda had received the same kind of response that the Khehora had and in her youth she’d been viciously been laughed at. “At my age, I no longer fight it or share my opinion. I find it very useless to do so.” You couldn’t change everyone over night, especially people who did not want to change. “A very long, dangerous, and lonely road.” Esme added. “Some would kill you if you stepped in and protected their kill.” The warriors would ripe her to pieces just as surely as they would ripe into the dragons.

Suluksati remained still, resisting the urge to stretch her neck and observe the woman's hands more closely as she drew. It flattered her to have so much attention paid to her, and she couldn't help a little purr of appreciation.

“It is a shame, then.” she said grimly, “That it must be so.” And horribly unfair. To force a child to sacrifice life for the sake of personal growth was unkind. It was one thing to hunt for food, and quite another to hunt for power, and to have to risk one's life to do it. Worse still would be those children who were not warriors or violent of disposition – they too would have lives on their hands, without ever striking the blow or wishing to.

“It is possible that nobody has asked. I find that people do not ask why, not when it is against tradition.” she commented, remembering her own encounter with the bullheadedness of tradition. “And the answers they give are never satisfactory.”

She rumbled. “I have noticed that. They are very protective of the lives they take. The dragons, too, aren't very happy about my interference.” she said sadly, “But you should not give up.” Suluksati wanted to be encouraging. This Dovaa woman shared her views, her attitudes, everything, but she was discouraged. Suluksati didn't want her to be – she needed her to not be. “You have a way with words, my friend... I'm sorry, what was your name?” she asked, realizing that she had neglected to ask. “If you could figure out the right words to use, I am sure that you could... twist perceptions.”

She sighed, her feathers brushing out with the wind. “It won't happen overnight. Perhaps not even in our lifetimes...” She forgot she was posing and moved to look right at the Dovaa, trying to impart some of her dedication and ferocity to her with her blazing orange eyes. It was a silly concept, but Suluksati needed to share some of her endless resolve with this person who she already had so much in common with.

“But we can make it happen, bit by bit. That is what I believe.”

Esmeralda’s eyes were constantly switching between the paper before her and Suluksati, if she wanted to get her proportions right that’s what she needed to do. “Well, the way I see it… For now there’s nothing we can do about that, but plenty of other things we can do.” It was useless simply thinking on the negatives, there were plenty of other things they could do that would help and those are the things they ought to be focusing on. The Dovaa did not share her thoughts though. “A social construct is hard to deconstruct.” She commented absentmindedly focused on her drawing. “Perhaps when I become a Master I will be able to see if more can be done.”

Done with a headshot, Emeralda began on the body shot on the same page. “I’m sure as a Khehora however it is easier for you than for a Dovaa. Perhaps when I am able to master my Dragon form…” But that was a thing only Master could do and she had not reached that rank yet. Soon though. Soon she would finish her work and present it to be judged and receive that rank she sought. A smile grew on Esmeralda’s lips and she paused her hand to send the smile to Sulu. “I am Esmeralda, it’s a pleasure to meet you.” She considered the Khehoras words for a bit before continuing her drawing. “I also need the rank if I do not want my words to fall on def ears.”

Sulu didn’t know the whole story, how some were trying to discredit her because of Ekundayo. It made her angry that they would question her so. Fools. All of them. “Definitely not in our lifetime.” But she had seen things happen that she thought she never would, like the war that had brought them all together. “Only time will tell I suppose.” Indeed, only time would tell what would happen to the Dragons. Magesc needed the dragons after all for power, they’d never truly die out but the conflict between Magescien and dragon might grow large.

“Deconstruct, no... but molded, shaped until it is unrecognizable, that can be done.” Suluksati rumbled. It had been a thought – an issue – that she had contemplated for some time. “The only way to truly deconstruct it would be to build anew, with innocents. And that... would involve much trauma and bloodshed... a fate I would like to avoid.”

Suluksati shifted her wings, watching the scribbling curiously. “Mmm... I hope that achieving such a rank will work in your favor...” she sighed, “I doubt I will reach such a rank of respect and acclaim...”
