Custom Medicine, Poison, & Ingredients

Medicines and poisons are the territory of the Medical Specialist. To heal, or to kill, they are able to develop these chemical concoctions. Both medicine and poison come in many forms. Some medicines enhance an ability while others merely heal. Likewise some poisons deal direct harm, while others simply hinder the victim in some way. Further, there are several forms of each, requiring varied delivery methods.

Rules

  • Basic ingredients may be purchased at the market.

  • Medicines and Poisons ranked D and below can be purchased by anyone from the village market or medical center.

  • No medicine or poison may use more than two types.

  • The more powerful the effect, the longer it must take to take effect.

  • Any medicine or poison utilizing “Special Ingredients” may only be created by a medic with the proper benefits.

  • Special Ingredients must be found in game. They cannot be purchased at the market.

  • The same special ingredient may be used for any medicine or poison, so long as the basic effect of that ingredient is the same.

  • Only one special ingredient can be found per post when foraging.

  • Anyone can find special ingredients, so long as they know what they are looking for.

  • Higher ranking or more powerful effects require more ingredients, and higher creation post counts.

  • No Medicine or Poison may have multiple effects. Likewise, there is no “Cure All” antidote that can cure every poison effect.

  • Science is your friend. If there is an existing version of what you want in the real world, try that before making up your own.

Medicine/Poison Types
Injected
Many medicines and poisons come in liquid forms that must be delivered to the bloodstream. These are referred to by the injection delivery method, which requires a Syringe. Syringes can be purchased by medics creating this type, from their local hospital or medical center. Medicines or poisons available on the open market of this type, will already come packaged with their syringe.

Airborne
Airborne medicine and poisons come in a gaseous form. These are generally released into the air around a target, and must be breathed in to take effect. Some airborne gasses may also effect on contact. Gasses are generally delivered by gas canisters or capsules. Both can, again, be purchased at the medical center, and the open market versions will come pre-packaged.

Ingested
The simplest form of medicine or poison, the ingested type is merely taken through the mouth. This type ranges from pills, to powders placed on food, to liquids. Some naturally growing plants also fall under this category, if they have a direct effect when eaten. Ingested medicines and poisons need no delivery system, and are only available in their basic form.

Contact
Contact effecting chemicals are those which take their effect after making contact with the target's skin. Usually in liquid or gas form, they make their way through the target's pores, and find their way into the system that way. Gas types use the same delivery methods as airborne medicine and poison, while liquid types can be applied in many ways.

Special Ingredients

  • "Magic" Mushrooms
Ingredient Location: The mushrooms grow in small clumps around the bases of certain trees in most forests.
How to Obtain: When hunting mushrooms, roll a six sided die. 1, 3, or 6, and you find a mushroom.
Description: Usually brown, these mushrooms have a long thin stalk, with a very small rounded crown. They usually grow in clumps, making up for their diminutive size.
    Effect:
A natural hallucinogen, when eaten these mushrooms weaken your inhibitions and grasp on reality. Left to their own devices, victims of this will begin to imagine things happening around them. The base effect is mostly harmless, however the victim is highly vulnerable to suggestion, and someone could easily convince them of a scenario of their own design while under the mushroom's effect. A side effect of this is that the victim's mind is slightly more susceptible to genjutsu while under the effect of the mushroom. The effect lasts for three posts per mushroom ingested. It is not uncommon for unsuspecting campers to fall victim to these mushrooms.
(-1 Increment Rank to Genjutsu Resistance. (Effect does not stack with itself.))

Ash's Lavender Scented Candle
Rank: C
Type: Airborn | Use: Poison
Common Ingredients: Lavender Oil, Bee's Wax, Purple Dye (any finely crushed purple flower/herb), wick, Jasmine, Chamomile
Special Ingredients: Oat Straw, Wandering Spider Venom
Creation Posts: 3
Creation Method: Mix heated and liquified Bee's Wax, Lavender Oil, Poison and Purple Dye in pot slowly. Pour half of the well mixed and heated mixture into a warmed glass container. Tighten the wick and let cool. Do a second pour to fill any holes or air bubbles and allow to cool.
Effect:Mixed with an assortment of chemicals, poisons and herbs-when lit the candle releases a colorless and scentless toxin in the air so that only the floral scent can be detected. The toxin seeps into the body through the lungs and begins to slow down the body's reaction time considerably the longer the victim is exposed to the poison. This toxin will NEVER be able to kill someone, because that was not what it was designed for. Being exposed to this nearly undetectable toxin for long periods of time in an enclosed space will cause someone to pass out.

First Post After Exposure: Slight sluggish feeling.
Second Post After Exposure: Vision begins to blur.
Third Post After Exposure: Extremely blurred vision and unable to keep up with the world around them. (- 1/2 rank Reaction Speed for every post afterward until cured/Pass Out.)
Seventh Post After Exposure: Pass Out.

Sounds like you both know more about this than I do...

A note on both your applications. Common ingredients don't need to be listed. Common ingredients is a catch all for any basic ingredients that don't really have much rarity. Things you can pick up at the market. They'll be listed as simply "Common Ingredients" in the currency system. The slot in the format is just meant to be a number, indicating how many are needed.

Kaeru Miko

The various brackets on the format are meant to be removed. They only exist, actually, to indicate bits that are meant to be removed before application.

Urtica: How effective is this meant to be? Will it stop a large wound from bleeding, or just help smaller cuts seal faster? Also, since allergies aren't really a thing here, I wouldn't bother to include that bit.

Silybum: (How is that pronounced? Sounds a bit like something that would make my five year old nephew giggle his little head off.) What exactly is the intent with this one? It seems at a glance intended as a catch all antidote, which is against the rules set forth. It also could be taken to be a specific antidote to the Amanita or Alcohol, but as we don't have either of those (Yet), it seems fairly pointless in that regard. I'd certainly be willing to make a return to it if you wanted to make the Amanita as well (Most likely as an ingredient.), but currently it doesn't seem very useful.

Candle: I'm torn between saying this should be made as the poison itself and the candle as a custom tech, and just letting it be in current form... So, for now I'll look at it in the current form.

Firstly, I'd like to ask you to make the special ingredients you listed so that I can see what they do and what their part in this is, as well as how and where they can be found.

The note about the toxin not being deadly doesn't need to be included, at all. It just leads to potential confusion. The effect list should probably be worded as "Post OF exposure" rather than post after. Post after implies that even if they get away from the fumes it still effects them, which I'd take it from the description, is not true.

It needs to be made clear what the range is on the candle's effect, as well as how long it takes to spread over an area. I don't imagine it would immediately take effect when the candle is first lit, much less over it's entire range.

Since we've switched from half ranks to increment ranks, I think it'd be better to use those to designate the reduction. Perhaps -1 Increment every post after the third since you have it going for seven posts before the final effect anyways. Makes for a good gradual lead in to the final effect.

Since I expect "Curing" would be via a medic removing the toxin somehow, probably instantly via jutsu, there should also be a recovery effect if the victim gets out of range of the candle. Possibly simply a reverse of the degradation, with the victim recovering one increment per post until the toxin has cleared their system.

~

A side note, for both of you since you both seem fairly knowledgeable of these things. If you could, I'd love it if you would help us out in expanding this system by making up some ingredients and universal poisons and meds. Any suggestions on ways to modify the current setup for better ease of use would also be welcome.

1)The poison comes in no other form than his Candle. So.... yeah.
2)I have all of the Special ingredients in the list I made. I have yet to detail the poison that comes from insects/animals/fish though so I can get onto that soon.
3)How does stating that the poison isn't deadly going to be confusing? And no, the poison gets absorbed by the person's lungs and has long lasting effects. One wiff and that's when it begins to take effect. It has to seep into the body and begin its work (which is why it takes so long to do its job).
4)Range done.
5)I'm not sure what the increments are. Either way, the candle is meant to take away 2 complete ranks off the person's reaction speed/speed before they pass out. I'm not sure how that would translate to your increments.
6)No auto-curing since, like I said before, the poison is absorbed by the body before it starts to do its job. But its not a miracle poison, if there is absolutely any filtration system (even so much as a shirt over your face) the poison doesn't have direct contact with your lungs and can't take affect.
