Soren E. Rasmussen

From the market he made his way to the slums, passing out food to families and individuals as he passed, each greeting him with, "Good morning, and thank you, Doktor," in their respective languages. Most were a variant of English, though obviously bastardized with other languages. Soren set up his 'office' and went straight to work. Every day he worked as a free doctor in these slums for these people that could not afford even the most basic of medical care from the doctors granted a license in the city. Soren asked for no payment, but if they felt they must give him something, he requested unusual ingredients. Anything was fine, as long as it was not something you could find anywhere. Most often they would come up empty, and Soren never faulted them for it. Others however would bring things that grew deep within the underbelly of the city, jokingly referred to as 'where even light fears to tread.'

From some of the healthier patrons he would inquire whether they would permit him to take some of their blood, for payment of course. When asked why, he'd respond only with "research." Taking a pint at a time, he'd pay them with money, food, or even treatment for more serious ailments - usually sexually transmitted in origin, or breaks in bone.

As the sun began to rise high into the sky, the line had receeded and his work for the day here was done. For lunch he visited his usual haunt, a small dingy pub near the entrance of the slums. Requesting a bottle of wine and whatever food they had on the stove for the day. He poured himself a large glass of wine, drinking it down in a few large gulps before pouring another. Before downing this one, he produced a phial from his coat, the crimson liquid glimmered in the candlelight before he poured it into the wine, slowly stirring the brew. He let out a long sigh before taking a large gulp, immediately his face contorted in disgust. His lip curled slightly, his brow furrowed as the liquid flowed down his throat. He shivered a bit as the acrid, metallic flavor gave way to the sweet pungent wine. The flavors began to meld as he let the wine sit, slowly and begrudgingly he sipped at the brew....

[{Again I'm gonna make this pretty later!]}

XXXXXThe woman had already been in the pub, speaking to the owner, haggling prices for a potted plant in the window. While it seemed just a normal green broad leaf plant, it was really a 'miracle' plant as she called it. This specific one was used for the bases for most of what she experimented with. "You have no use for this my friend." she smiled charmingly at the man hoping it would work. Which to her relief, did.

XXXXX"Ahh thank you!" She gave him the envelope with the specified amount of money.

XXXXXXiaolian held the huge bundles of flower and the potted plant happily, excited to know that she finally had the plant as her own. She turned to leave but soon stopped dead in her tracks at the sight of the tall man from the market. 'I saw him earlier...What is he..drinking?..' The light in the bar was dim, making it hard for her to actually see what he was doing or more importantly, what he was drinking.

XXXXXIt looked familiar enough, the thickness in which it moved to the scent and color. Not yet red, but not a color that meant it was safe to consume. Then the thought clicked. It was blood. The thought made her a tad bit green under the gills, but at the same time, it mattered not.

XXXXXWhat did matter was her next idea: he could be her next tester.

XXXXXExcitedly she made her way to his table, pushing her fear of people away for science and alchemy. "Uh, excuse me. That drink there..." she paused, thinking of how to come out with what she was trying to say. "It... Can't be pleasant." Green orbs watched the man for a moment till it wavered, remembering that she had the glass bottle on her person. Xiaolian produced the clear bottle, setting it on the table across from the man awkwardly, trying to keep the flowers and plant in her arms.

XXXXXShe was engulfed by yellow and coral petals, only her eyes and the top of her dark shiny head could be seen at this point. "These pills..." she continued, unsure as to how to tell him what kind of pills they were. Even when he drank what was inside of them.

Not noticing the woman's presence until she was quite literally upon him, her bright verdant eyes piercing through the darkness. Soren instantly recognized her as the beauty he glimpsed at the market. The flickering of candle light illuminating his odd orchid eyes with an eldritch flame as he took her in, her form hidden by various plants she held tight. There was something behind his eyes, but it soon faded. He peered over his glass, swirling it slowly, "Pleasant it is not...alas, tis a displeasure I suffer gladly for my research. The imbibing of an alcohol base strewn with plasmal solution and platelets containing life itself."

As she set the clear bottle containing small red caplets he took a slow sip of the brew in his cup. "I know you not...and yet a strikingly beautiful woman you are, giving me a strange bottle containing even stranger drug. Might I ask who you are, and what...these are?" He sipped his drink again, swirling it to remix the solution before finishing it off. The young woman was beautiful indeed, but he was not one to trust others so easily. He had to be shown proof of someone's truth.

XXXXXThe emerald eyed woman shifted the flowers weight to one side as she listened to him speak. He was obviously versed and very educated, she could tell he was trying to scare her away with words. But that didn't scare her easy. "I see...So blood then. There must be a reason as to why you are doing this." She paused, shifting the potted plant. "If I can suggest these pills. I had been working on a better way to store blood, since the packs take up space. Unfortunately, when removing some of the molecular cells it caused the formula to fizz when mixed with a liquid." the woman smiled, even when she knew it wouldn't be seen. "I'm sorry. My name is Emerald, no last name. I'm an alchemist."

XXXXXXiaolian blushed, hiding behind her flora as she was looked at intently. "I have no real use for these, this batch has came out incorrectly. So instead of keeping it, I may as well give it to someone who drinks..." she cleared and lowered her voice. "...Blood." Her eyes were bright, intent on giving this to another person, just to see what their reaction to it was. She had also noted that he had been doing this for research, which meant that he had been in the same area as she.

Soren's eyes widened a bit, stopping himself from pouring his next glass. He was rather surprised at how quickly and accurately she responded. "My...beautiful and erudite, quite the potent combination." He leaned forward onto the table, placing his elbows on the surface and tenting his fingers. "As to the reason....When scholars study a thing, they strive to kill it first, if it's alive. Then they have the parts and they've lost the whole...for the link that is missing between the pieces was the living soul," His voice, though it a low whisper just loud enough she could hear, it carried a power with it. A power that one would assume could only come with age, but coming from such an obviously young man was unsettling. He gently picked up the bottle, rotating it in his fingers and looking over the small red pills. Plucking the lid from the bottle he dropped one into his glass, and re-corking the bottle. He looked deep into the young woman's eyes once again, "As a fellow alchemist...I would be only obliged to test this product. Ms. Emerald, you may call me 'Beloved'," he shot her a playful wink, the strong wine having made its way to his head and giving him a warm fuzzy buzz. He filled his glass with wine once more, the red caplet melting slowly - a gelatine cap - the powder contained within immediately fizzed up, almost carbonating the wine. He raised the glass and gave Ms. Emerald a nod and a toast before quickly drinking down the wine. He was rather surprised, the previous acrid and metallic taste was now completely gone, all he could taste was the cheap wine. It was only that however...the small caplet contained within, a substance of far more potency than he was accustomed. His body flushed a moment as the life contained within the freeze-dried blood hit him strong. "Absolutely fantastic....Ms. Emerald, would I be able to purchase more of these from you? If not...could you tell me the ingredients list and your process?" He was exited at the prospect of no longer having to taste pure blood, speaking rather quickly and erratically before catching himself and settling back into his seat.

XXXXXXiaolian cocked her head to the side as she watched the odd man speak, he looked young but had an odd air about him. "Faust..." she whispered to herself while adjusting her stance again; for a moment she looked around, seeing that there had been quite a few that had been staring at her. A deep breath was taken to calm her nerves, but she found that it didn't help a single bit. "Yes the pills..." she began when the man had picked up the glass bottle, took a pill and dropped into the wine. It reacted as she had anticipated, as it was when she first tested it. The pill made her a bit frustrated, but it wasn't something she couldn't figure out, all things will work out for her.

XXXXX"B-Beloved?.... Uhm I don't.. Is that alright for me to call you that?" she blushed again at his words as she swirled the contents of the glass around and inspected it. "Well..." she said looking around again. "I would love to tell you...Mr...Beloved.. But If that were to happen, i'd have to take you home." she paused awkwardly. "To my place. To show you the secret...." she blushed profusely, thinking that nothing she has said made any sense. "The ingredient is blood, just blood. But I think that may be the issue itself. It might need a gumming agent..."

XXXXXShe didn't want to tell the man that the blood he had just consumed was her own blood; she felt that even if he had drank the stuff, it would still be odd to think he was drinking the blood of the woman who was going to make these for him. "Well sure, I have a few other batches of different blood from this one. I'll let you choose whichever one you prefer." She smiled. "These ones you can keep."
