Ardun Lake

User Image

A vast expanse of blue, sparkling like a sea of sapphires in the sunlight and reflecting a ribbon of diamonds at night. On the north bank of the lake is the edge of the Great forest, and to the east are the snow capped mountains and the new location of the Shadow Nation.
Dotting the shoreline are remnants of a time of prosperity, just before a war that decimated the Western Realm hundreds of years ago. Now most lay in heaps of ruin, while other relics lay hidden in the shallows of the water. The glassy surface hides centuries old secrets in its depths.

The end of the Ardun peninsula had been set up for the 10th anniversary of the Alliance of the four Western Nations. Trees had been strung with electric lamps, tables were set with silver and gold dinnerware and an orchestra was warming up their instruments under the light of the electric torches. The dancing green had been leveled months ago and left to grow a plush lawn just for this evening, bordered with a thick hedge that grew to about waist height. Jugglers and acrobats stretched to prepare for the evening's festivities, and many-scarved gypsies began to practice their curious, exotic dances near a great bon-fire. Decorations had been set out and food had been prepared for the feast.

Several pavillions had been erected in the woods just off the celebration grounds for the visiting dignitaries to camp in with their own courts'

The guests were beginning to arrive, just as the sun set below the horizon...

The High Chancellor sat on her dais nodding politely to those filtering past the high table. She looked from side to side at the empty chairs reserved for the Alliance Nations' other dignitaries who were to join her. Everything was prepared, all details had been attended to, and she hoped all the revelers would know nothing but gaiety. If all went as planned, once tonight was over, she would have a moment to relax and enjoy her family.
Rennara was every moment awaiting the arrival of a familiar presence either behind her or, as was often the case, at her right hand. While remaining attentive to her duties, she reached out with a thought to find him.

She did not have to reach far, as another mental strand seemed to wrap around her own, caressing it gently as a smooth hand brushed along her lower back. Crow rubbed at his beard with his other hand as he stepped next to her, a light smile playing at his lips as he nodded to their surroundings. "Everything looks wonderful. So wonderful, in fact, that I may have to start pulling myself away from the library once and a while so I can come admire it." He brushed his hand up through his blonde hair, letting it fall naturally down to the soft black material at his shoulders. "Has anyone arrived?"

Vulcan hated large gatherings. His discomfort was visibly obvious as he moved among the other people gathered. He had lost Izuma somewhere in the crowd, much to his dismay. He figured it would happen at some point; Izuma was, after all, much more social than himself. Still, he longed for the company of his friend. With a sigh, he moved silently among the people, bowing his head in acknowledgment from time to time, but never pausing to make conversation. He only paused when he saw Rennara and Crow gathered together. Relieved to see familiar faces, Vulcan made his way over to them. "Good evening, My Lady," he gave a small bow and then turned to Crow. "Crow, good evening."

Rennara turned to Crow with a smile and had just been about to respond in the negative when Vulcan approached them.
"Good evening, My Lord." She replied.
"I am glad you've managed to find your way up here. As you can see," she said indicating the empty chairs on the dais with a wave of her hand.
" you are the first of our distinguished guests to arrive."

"Yes, but not by much!" Akakios bounded up next to Vulcan and gave him a hearty slap on the back. "How you managed to beat me here is beyond me." He laughed and turned to Rennara. "Ah! Rennara! So lovely to see you again!" Disregarding rank and any formalities, he gave her a hug. "And Crow!" His grin broadened even wider and he locked Crow in a bear hug. "Lovely to see you as well. We really must meet more often. I miss seeing all these bright, shining faces!" He laughed again and released Crow. "I only wish that there were more bright, shining faces here. Ah, perhaps they are still coming."

"Good evening to you, too, Lord Akakios," Vulcan stated flatly.

"Please, just Akakios, my friend," Akakios said with his signature grin. "I think we've all passed the point of formalities."

Crow gave a small smile at the boundless energy of the other dignitary, glad that his ribs did not break nor bruise quite as easily as a normal person's might. "And you as well, Akakios." He gave a grateful nod to Vulcan, glad to see another friend from the old days. "It is good to see you, Lord Vulcan. You must tell me how the Fire Nation has been fairing." He shot a glance over his shoulder at Rennara, a subtle apology and promise of later connection twinkling in his yellow orbs.

Rennara smiled back at Crow as she returned the hug with a warm pat on Akakios' shoulder. "Please friends, be at your ease." Servants began to bring trays and fresh pitchers to the table at the side of the dais. She called over a pair of pages and gave them instructions to go find out the whereabouts of Lord Iakov and Lord Vulcan. Truly there was no point in sending someone after Lord Veon. He would arrive at his own leisure and not a moment before he felt the desire to.
"Refreshments are served and the performers will be beginning shortly."

Vulcan sighed. "The Fire Nation has seen better days. It is quite torn at the moment. Some people think that Lord Izuma handled the War and its aftereffects well, and others highly disagree with his actions. Things are quite unsteady at the moment." He glanced about him, searching for his friend, but without luck. "I fear for Lord Izuma. I have a terrible feeling that something bad will happen. Perhaps I am worrying too much."

Akakios grinned and gave Vulcan a pat on the shoulder. "You always worry too much. Izuma will be fine." It looked like he was about to say more when he suddenly stiffened. "Is that who I think it is?" He shook his head. "Well, I'll be damned."

Advancing towards the small band of leaders was a giant of a man. His golden eyes flickered back and forth as they assessed the gathering. His tanned face was stern, but it was obvious that the man was uncomfortable. He dwarfed the page that had found him amongst the guests, and he really didn't seem to notice that he was losing the page with his long strides. He halted in front of the group, placed his right hand over his heart, and gave a stiff bow. "My lords and lady," he said, his voice deep and strangely accented. "I am Lord Iakov Iosifovich Svyatoslav of the Earth Nation." He straightened, towering over the others. "I apologize that we have not met earlier. I fear that I have been," he paused as he searched for the correct word, "busy."

Rennara curtsied slightly to the newcomer in response to his bow.
"Welcome to the festivities, Lord Iakov. I am Lady Rennara, elected High Chancellor of the Water Nation. This is my Consort and Lord Regent, Crow Shirvas. Please allow me to introduce you to Lord Vulcan Aeolos, High Priest of the Fire Nation; as well as Akakios Valtus, a General of the Shadow Nation. It is my pleasure to finally meet you in person..."
As she made introductions between dignitaries and pleasantries were exchanged, the musicians began to play from their platform beside the main stage. Servants were bustling about the crowds of people gathered below the dignitaries' platform. The performers were hidden from the crowd by a series of temporarily erected walls as they began to warm up and make last minute adjustments before they went out onto the stage.
