RP, RPing - Role play, Role playing - The act of taking on the role of a character. May be done in any of several modes, including 1st-person dialog, 3rd person narration of action, or even 1st person improvisational acting
RPer, RPers - Role Player, Role Players - A person, who takes a role on a certain type of character. They write paragraphs to other roleplayer by saying things like "Lana was walking down the road..."
God Mod, God Modding - God Modding is in essence when someone’s character has the ability to do practically anything without limits or boundaries. And example is when they simply cannot be harmed by any and all means other RPers try
-It can be killing or injuring a character without the player's express permission.
-It can be when they simply can’t be hit and dodge all attacks or anything for this matter aimed at them.
-It can also be using other characters that other people RP with. In other words, if you do not RP as
Legolas, then you cannot have Legolas say anything, or do anything, without the player's express permission.
The absolute worst is when they make out another character to be what they’re not, just to make their own character seem superior. They make others seem weak, screaming for help, when they’ve made it quite clear about their advantages and strengths. This is called power-play. It’s a strain of God-Modding, but instead of just being irritating, it’s offensive to boot.
This is a prime example of God Modding:
Player A: Punches Player B
Player B: Dodges attack, grabs Player A and throws him. Player A flies at Player B, who warps behind him and slashes Player A in the back.
OOC - Out Of Character - 1) An action or discussion made between other players not performed or said within the RP 2) An action that is not in line with the character's personality
IC - In Character - 1) An action or discussion which is performed by a character in the RP 2) Character behavior in line with the character's personality
Literate - A good roleplayer. Specifically, a literate roleplayer does not use chatspeak, spells word correctly, and has proper usage and grammar. Literates are less likely to be desperates or n00bs and generally roleplays well.
If you see a thread with "LITERATE ROLEPLAY/LITERATES ONLY" in the subject line, it means they only accept people who have good grammar.
1. The literacy rate is 97% in America, meaning 97% of Americans can read and write.
2. The difference between a literate roleplayer and an advanced roleplayer is that being advanced specifically states that you are good at writing (i.e. descriptions, characters) but literate just means you have good grammar, although they're often used interchangeably.
Semi-Literate - An adjective describing the state of being only partially or poorly literate. A semiliterate individual may struggle with reading, but their partial literacy is particularly evident in their writing.
Using slang is not itself a sign of being semiliterate, but knowing only the slang definitions of many words may be.
Consistently using the wrong spelling of similar-sounding words such as "their", "there", and "they're" is another common sign of poor literacy skills.
Perhaps the most frustrating sign of semiliteracy is the use of 'netspeak' or 'txt-speak', wherein the writer abbreviates short and simple words for no reason beyond laziness.
English: This test is crucial to passing because it counts for 25% of my grade.
Semiliterate slang: This test is crucial because it's too hard!"
English: "They're going over there to get their equipment."
Semiliterate misuse: "Their going over their to get their equipment."
English: "Why are you writing like that?"
Semiliterate netspeak: "y r u riten lyke dat??"
