I Wonder to the Music of the Night

⎰≪≪≪≪≪≪≪≪≪≪≪≪≫≫≫≫≫≫≫≫≫≫≫≫⎱

Crisdean seeing the aven girl was well; if a bit ruffled. turned his head to the skies and muttered that the sun was reaching its zenith. He begged his pardons to Kalani, and ash. Crisdean had grown weary from his travels and the events of the day, and the sun's rays had started to make his ears ring.

He called to his raven and pointed to his tower window. the raven flew off towards its open seal. Crisdean again bid the small group good day. with a twirl of his cloak, he himself took upon himself the form of a great raven and flew into the sky towards the window of his room. it beat walking all through the castle. plus he had to make ready his room for when his two wards arrived.

*Crisdean has left the castle garden and entered his rooms*
*Cullen has entered into the castle kitchen*
*Faolan has entered the castle gates.*

Egan Savage
Egan examined Kalani closely as she spoke and told them that she would be alright, that her fall wasn't as rough as it could have been. He looked back over to Crisdean as the other man excused himself and waved him off as he took his leave. He turned his attention back to Kalani. "I'm glad that you're alright," he said. "It would be unfortunate if you got really hurt. Our healer died two years ago, and we're still working on finding someone to take over for him."

As he looked over her, he took note of her traits. While he wasn't really an expert at reading people, he could tell from her posture that she had some sort of military background. "You're certainly an interesting one, Kalani. I'm Egan. I've lived on the island my whole life, so I can help you a bit if you need anything." He titled his head as he suddenly caught an unfamiliar scent on her. "How odd. I smell a bear on you, but I don't know any bears around here. Did you meet one somewhere?"

Kalani’s ears perked up when he mentioned a scent on her that was bear and inquired about whether or not she had met one and simply nodded her ears drooped slightly as she replied “I have, I’m fortunate that he showed up when he did, I was attacked in the forest after I arrived here and well…” she sighed as she was reminded of the fact that she was likely on borrowed time since the enemy would likely figure out how to get her back somehow. She looked up into the sky and continued, changing the subject “this place is so different from where I’m from, so much vegetation and greenery compared to where I used to live, and even more different from where I was held captive, has it always been this way?” her question might have been surprising but for her it seemed legitimate, her home was far more inhospitable and much more barren than here, and what few areas that had any plant life were mostly underground where they would be safe from the scorching sun.

Egan Savage
Egan watched Kalani with interest as her ears perked up and then drooped again upon hearing his question. He found the mention of the bear interesting and decided that he would have to take the time to figure out more about that later. "It's a good think that he arrived when he did, then," he said. "It looks like you've been through a lot. It would've been awful for you to get badly hurt or even worse so soon after arriving here."

He noticed the way she changed the subject and decided to go along with her for now, since he didn't want to make her too uncomfortable. He simply gave her a kind smile and nodded at her question. "There have been a few moments where things weren't so beautiful. It's peaceful here for the most part, but there are still a few moments of danger from time to time. But the island and garden have been like this pretty much my entire life. I can hardly recall any time when things were different."

Kalani listened to Egan with interest, it was surprising that even here there had been times of hardship that would disrupt such a peaceful place, even more so that things seem to change often around here, which made her wonder what was going on that would cause such changes frequently and her eyes showed that she had plenty of questions but at the same time her body was exhausted from a long day and even though she has continued to be restless even she had to wonder if getting some rest was a good idea, even though apart of her still wants to flee this place before her pursuers catch up with her and destroy such a beautiful place.

Even as she stood there it was pretty clear that she was restless and distressed by past events that led up to her arrival here and she eventually spoke up though much more softly “I see… i… I hope my presence here doesn’t bring harm to this place, I’ve seen my home put to the flames of war once I would hate to have that to happen here as well” her distress was getting worse as she started moving about a little clearly unsure about anything at this point and wondering what to do before I hell brakes loose here too and likely doom another place that has given her shelter, time for respite, and perhaps a chance to recover long enough to figure out a way to save her people and keep what happened to her own home from happening here as well.

Eventually through all her worrying caused her to lose focus and the fear, and fatigue of events past started to catch up with her as she hit the ground suddenly not even realizing that she had collapsed as she found herself looking at the sky from the ground and a tear running down her cheek as her eyes closed as the exhaustion finally took over. A couple of staff members saw her collapse and came over immediately giving Egan a slight nod as they tended to her care one of them speaking up to Egan “I wouldn’t worry too much she’s just overexerted herself from exhaustion she’ll be okay once she gets some rest” the other staff member was concerned as they both helped pick her up so that they could take her to room to rest.

-crisdean enters the garden, his hands full of a basket, holding a scroll and tools for the gathering and preparation of herbs.-

Crisdean stalked among the roses and kitchen herbs, gathering what called to him. After about half an hour's work, he sat in the shade of a tree and began to prep the herb, making it ready to dry and powder. The day was fine and bright, and a breeze blew in through the garden over the walls. As he sat, he sang aloud to himself or maybe to the plants. Who could tell but his tenor voice reached throughout the garden.

"A ghaoil, leig dhachaigh gum mhàthair mi;
A ghràidh, leig dhachaigh gum mhàthair mi;
A ghaoil, leig dhachaigh gum mhàthair mi -
An tòir chrodh-laoigh a thàine mi.

Gur ann a-raoir a chuala mi
Mo ghaol a bhith ri buachailleachd,
’S ged fhuair thu ’n iomall na buaile mi,
A ghaoil, leig dhachaigh mar fhuair thu mi.

’S mi dìreadh ris na gàrraidhean,
’S a’ teàrnadh ris na fàirichean,
Gun d’ thachair fleasgach bàigheil rium,
’S cha d’ dh’ fheuch e bonn ga chàirdeis rium.

Ged bheireadh tu crodh agus caoraich dhomh,
Ged bheireadh tu eachaibh air thaodaibh dhomh,
Ged bheireadh tu sin agus daoine dhomh,
A ghaoil, leig dhachaigh mar fhuair thu mi.

Trodaidh m’ athair ’s mo mhàthair riut,
Trodaidh mo chinneadh ’s mo chàirdean riut,
Ach marbhaidh mo thriùir bhràithrean thu

Mura tèid mi dhachaigh mar thàine mi.
Gheall mo mhàthair gùn thoirt dhomh,
Gheall i ribean a b’ ùire dhomh,
Is gheall i breacan ùr thoirt dhomh
Ma thèid mi dhachaigh mar fhuair thu mi."

*credits: "A Ghaoil, Leig Dhachaigh Gum Mhathair Mi (Love, Let Me Home To My Mother)" by Julie Fowlis,

Translation:
Love, let me home to my mother
Darling, let me home to my mother
Love, let me home to my mother
I only came for the cattle.

It was only last night
That I heard that my love was herding
And though you found me at the perimeter of the cattle fold
Love, let me home as you found me.

I was clambering up the dykes
And descending the ridges
When a friendly lad met me
And he did not enforce his friendship on me.

Though you were to give me cattle and sheep
Though you were to give me tethered horses
Though you were to give me that and men
Love, let me home as you found me.

My mother and father will chastise you
My clan and my relatives will chastise you
But my three brothers will kill you
If I don’t return home as I came.

My mother promised me a gown
Decorated with the newest of ribbons
And she promised me a new plaid
If I return home the way you found me.

Cass had made the trip to the castle to help with the younger kids. He wasn't planning to stay for long, just until the return trip of the cart to the village.

He'd known Sebastet for most of his life. She'd seen to his daily care when he'd arrived on the island as a stowaway. No one had known that he was on the ship until he'd tried to sneak off when they arrived here.

Surprisingly, it was Egan that caught him trying to get down the gangplank instead of the stairs for the other passengers.

And caught was meant literally...

Cass had slipped and Egan had saved him from a worse landing. He'd still been in bad shape.

Before getting to the ship, his stepfather had killed his mother and tossed Cass away. Thankfully he'd shifted way too early and his cat had kept him alive to get to the island. But as a result of being in cat form for so long, he'd almost been feral. Probably a couple weeks out from it, to be honest.

Egan had taken him to Desha and saved his life in the process...

For a little while, he'd followed Desha and Egan around like a tiny stalker. Yes, he admitted the insanity of it. But in his defense, they had saved his life. They'd also shown him that men weren't all cruel bastards.

He'd always known Egan's preferences but had kept his mouth shut. Admittedly, it was self-defense at first. He'd still been in survival mode and didn't want to lose one of his father figures. He freely admitted that his younger self was a little bit of an idiot...

He'd also watched Dancer, Dev, Wind, and Blade whenever they came to the village. He was one of the kids that had played with them. They'd taught him so much...

He'd also snuck up to the castle two years ago and he'd seen everyone come back from the Hunter's attack... He'd also figured out that Desha was dead that day... Ghosts don't have a scent, after all...

He'd gone to the forest and spent a year recovering from the sights he'd seen that day. Then he went back to the village and threw himself into being a Runner. Only the kids used the title. It was a thing they did to repay the island for everything. For him, it repayment for saving his life.

He'd only really come to the castle to help get the kids settled in. Then he was going to explore the castle and head back to the village again.

That was the plan...

Then he'd seen Egan and Wind...

It didn't take much to guess that something had happened to Wind. He could see it in his eyes. Those brown eyes had seen so much and were still haunted. Plus, he'd been clinging to Egan.

That last part made him smile. That, and seeing their Marks... They were a power couple, in his eyes...

Then the dragons were coming and Egan had taken Wind inside. Cass had followed and learned about the secret hallway.

Scents had told him who was where then he'd moved on, helping with the kids again with no one the wiser to his actions unless he wanted to be seen. Sebastet's training had made certain that he was invisible when needed...

Truthfully, he was in training to be the perfect assassin. Unfortunately, he was just independent enough to do things his own way... He'd already gotten a few kills under his belt that no one knew about.

For instance: while Egan had taken care of his father, he had never known about his father's friends... They'd been even easier to hide afterwards...

After the kids were settled in, he'd explored the castle, saving the garden for last. That was a sight to see and would probably take him a few years to fully explore. In the end he'd brought a few of the kids out here with promises to be good. They knew to keep those promises...

They were all shifters and changing to their animal forms hadn't been a big deal. He was still bigger than the others and had taken on the babysitter role easily out of long habit. Unlike most Puma males, Cass had no problems with babysitting and it came naturally to him.

Even his cat enjoyed it...

He was sleek and muscular in his cat form, with a dark mask and ears, hazel eyes, and creamy fur tipped with the nearly transparent grey that allowed all pumas to nearly disappear at dawn and dusk or most low light conditions.

Right now, he was laying in the shade of a fruit tree that was flowering and watching the kids play near a small fountain. It was the strangest game of tag because they were all different animals: deer, rabbit, wolf, bobcat, fox, and a black bear. They were all obviously young, still at that slightly clumsy stage that managed to be cute instead of ridiculous. Still, it seemed that Ben was holding his own for a change. The young bear was learning... He enjoyed watching George, May, John, Jenny, Alan, and Ben when they played like this because they were all orphans like himself. The difference was that they had all been born here and raised by the village.

Cass still remembered the day his life had changed... In excruciating detail...

He shook off the memory and looked around, easily noting the basket that held spare clothes for shifters as well as the servants and gardeners.

He also noticed Crisdean but left him alone because he looked busy. He nodded to lady that brought over a basket of snacks for them and gave a chuffing sound to the others to alert them all to the food.

That was when he also noticed the young Hylarr girl with two servants trying to guide her from the kitchen to the library. He thought she looked adorably beautiful...

He considered for a moment then gave a louder chuffing sound to get her attention, wondering if she wanted to come over and visit with them...

crisdean happily watched the others in the garden, it was good to see the young ones run and play in it. He assumed little Cullen would be wandering the garden, catching frogs and other wildlife instead of tending to his studies as he should be. He laughed to himself.

Crisdean noticed the puma shifter and the others as he finished his work. crisdean smiled to see shifters and the young ones at play. He decided to stay in the garden to keep an eye on the young ones as best he could.
" Ah to be young again. uhm, Cullen needs to spend more time with kids his own age instead of always with me and his brother. It would do him good. said crisdean mostly out loud but mostly to himself.
crisdean stood and silently moved in the shadows of the garden as to watch the group but not call to much attention to himself as to not ruin their fun. but always near if needed.

Samirra was humming softly as she followed the servants from the kitchen to the library. She was happy that her aunt finally had someone who was going to work on getting herself fully back in sync. She hoped that the nice man would be able to give her aunt what she needed. And while she knew that it might be a bit too much to hope for, she couldn't help but hope that her aunt would be able to really find some true happiness here on the island.

She paused her moving as she and the servants passed the garden. She knew that they were trying to guide her to the library, but she couldn't help herself. She loved the garden so much already, so she had to pause for a moment to take in the sight of it again. That was when she heard the loud chuffing sound and shifted her attention to the puma that had made it.

She tilted her head a bit as she looked him over, wondering what he could want. He'd clearly been trying to get her attention, making her recognize that he was probably a shifter. She looked back over to the servants and motioned towards the puma. "I'm going to go over there and see what he wants," she said, sounding rather cheerful.

She immediately started walking towards Cass without waiting for any sort of response from her guides, still humming cheerfully. She came to a stop in front of the puma and paused to consider him now that she was closer. "Hi there! Thanks for getting my attention like that and giving me a good excuse to come back into the garden. I love it out here!"

Cass gave the girl a nod and nodded his head towards the other kids, giving a purring sound when they all invited her over. One by one, they all introduced themselves then told her his name and explained that they were all raised by the village as a whole. While they were all technically orphans, they had an entire island of 'parents' that were raising them.

And they all had Cass 'babysitting' them today.

While her attention was on the others, he caught sight of Crisdean and openly nodded to him out of respect. Then he shifted and pulled on a pair of shorts and a tanktop from the basket of spare clothes.

While he was still younger, his appearance put him at about 15 or so. He wasn't overly tall, not quite six feet yet. But he was leanly muscles and carried the build of a runner or a swimmer. His hair and eyes matched his cat, with his hair a messy near-shoulder length that frequently fell over his hazel-gold eyes. Those eyes showed him to have aged beyond his years long before getting to the island, yet still carrying the kindness he seemed to have naturally.

He finally pushed his hair back and offered a kind smile to the other kids, "Alright guys, let's not overwhelm her right off. Give her a chance to get a few words in of her own," he suggested in a soft baritone that showed hints of deepening a bit more as he got older.

Ben actually blushed as he looked at Samirra while the girls openly welcomed her into their circle of friends. May and Jenny were usually wary of anyone getting close to their friends, but they openly welcomed the young Hylarr without issue.

Sally and Mara smiled at all of the kids and gave a respectful nod to Cass. He was the oldest of the group and an independent male already, with hints of becoming an alpha in his own right. So they gave him the respect he'd earned so far.

Sally gave Samirra a gentle touch to her shoulder, "You can stay and play with them as you please, Samirra. Since he invited you over, Cass obviously all of you to meet. He's one of the older kids on the island and one that you can trust. Anyone he introduces you to is going to be trustworthy as well," she explained then backed off a bit to let the kids do as they wished.

Cass gave the girl a small smile, "Sebastet invited a bunch of the kids from the village to come stay at the castle for a while, so you will have plenty of us to interact with. We're all open to play or have someone else in on our lessons. Right now Jenny, May, and George are doing stalking lessons. Ben, Alan, and John are taking lessons with Cain in the library. I'm doing fighting lessons with Blade, Sebastet, and Ash. We're all supposed to be doing swimming lessons as well but we don't have a teacher yet. You can join any of them when you want to," he offered, encouraging her to get involved.

While Ben and the girls were trying to keep her attention, it becoming a little obvious that the other boys were trying to figure out what else to do in the garden since they had the free time today.

What Cass didn't say was that he was planning on heading back to the village as soon as he could. That was his 'territory' for lack of a better word. The castle was Sebastet's and he itched to get out of the dominant female's territory. He usually paid attention to his instincts...

But something about the young Hylarr girl was holding his attention for now...
