By the middle part of the twenty-first century, humanity had entered a period of renewal, a new Renaissance of sorts, in which the declaration of peace across the world had gave way to international collaborative efforts in science, art and philosophy that stretched the borders of human imagination. Massive leaps forward in so many fields brought humanity to new levels of wisdom and comfort, and it was at 2063 that man was able to travel beyond their home star system and into the galaxy at large.

That was also when they confirmed that they were not alone in the universe.

The nameless, eldritch horrors that made their home in outside of the confines of Earth's solar system were only too pleased to find the fledgling space travelers that had come out of the confines of their safe, protected star system. Such a numerous supply of food and labor was certainly to be exploited, and it was then that the Great War began. Aliens with a mastery of forces beyond human comprehension, something that could only be called magic, were devastating to the humans, and it didn't take long at all for the world's governments to be toppled. A demilitarized Earth was easy prey and the first five years of the Great War left humanity decimated.

At this point humanity, commanded by a new military regime, began to engage the enemy on their own terms. It had taken years but humans had found a way to access and utilize a supernatural power to rival that of the aliens that sought to enslave them. It had caused an uproar at first, the fact that young girls, some not even out of middle school, were the only ones able to access this power, were sent into the front lines of battle. However, it proved to be the edge they needed and they managed to push the invaders out of their star system and back to where they had come from.

For the most part anyway.

The arrival and battle with these monstrosities had fundamentally changed Earth, giving the previously mundane planet a new energy field as a result of the arcane nature of the creatures that had been inhabiting the solar system and the planet itself for the better part of a decade. The first magically gifted children discovered outside of the government's training facilities were quickly taken and placed into mandatory "observation" programs. In addition to awakening magical ability in some of the population, the new magical field around the earth gave the aliens, magical beings themselves, a place to hide and there a remnant force of the original invasion fleet slept in stasis. However, the new burgeoning use of magic caused some to awaken from their restless stasis and attack these beings of magical talent, drawn to them by their manipulation of the magical field around the world. The best these people could hope for was death; the more common and far more horrible possibilities included enslavement and eventual assimilation as a new alien horror.

The Arcane Registration and Control Act (ARCA) was passed once this was discovered, making it punishable by law for anyone not licensed by the government to practice any form of magic. Sensors were set up in every city and town to test children for latent magical ability and if a child's ability was deemed powerful enough, they disappeared into a government reeducation and training facility to become one of the new warriors facing off against the aliens that awakened from stasis or the hundreds of small, attempted return invasion forces that threw themselves at the solar system every year.

The overwhelming majority of magically latent children were female; these "magical girls" derived their power from the interaction of something within their biological or psychological makeup and the magical field that surrounded the planet. Though their potency as warriors dropped dramatically after they left puberty, they were found to be exceptionally likely to produce highly magical offspring and were quietly transitioned to being used as breeding stock for the time when humanity eventually had to go on the offensive. Knowledge of this portion of the government's program was kept strictly confidential, but when details leaked out, it brought about much higher resistance than had been foreseen, up to and including terrorist groups aiming to liberate retired "magical girls" and destroying the government breeding facilities.

Such rebellion was not tolerated in the new world after the alien invasions and government reprisal was swift and brutal. While the "magical girls" was humanity's only effective weapon against the alien threat, traditional military power was more than sufficient to violently silence a large scale uprising. The new focus on humanity's survival led to all world power being concentrated in a single government, headed by a mysterious governing body that answered to no higher authority. Draconian laws regarding freedoms of speech and rights to protest were enacted, and with military precision, the world came under martial law.

There are still resistance movements but they've gone from citizen protests to paramilitary groups, knowing that capture will result in death or "reeducation". The increasingly restrictive laws and martial lockdown on citizens across the world has made the open freedom of the past a dream barely remembered for most people. The battles against the alien threat rage on this planet and on outposts throughout the galaxy, and the magical girls are aided by mysterious allies, about which little is known, bravely fighting to the death in some cases to wipe out the aliens that threaten their families, friends and entire world.

The question however must be asked; is this new world one worth fighting for?
