So I wanted to stimulate some conversation around Black Greek Organizations. Your opinions about them, the claims of hazing, the need (or lack thereof), or if you even know about them, or if you don't think it necessary for people to join. And if there are any Greeks in the forum the benefits you have from joining.
There are officially 9 organizations that are recognized.
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Incorporated
I listed them in order of Incorporation date.
Hazing - any action taken or situation created that involves or results in abusive, physical contact or mutual harassment of a prospective Fraternity or Sorority member; and that any such action is considered hazing, whether it occurs on or off the Fraternity or Sorority premises, campus or place where chapters or prospective members meet; and that hazing has also been described to include any action that results in excessive mutual or physical discomfort, embarassment or harassment; that such activities include, but are not limited to, paddling, creation of excessive fatigue, physical or psychological shock, morally degrading or humiliating activities, late work sessions that interfere with scholastic activities and any other activities consistent with fraternal law and regulations and policies of the affiliated educational institution and federal, state or local law
This definition of hazing provided by the National Pan-Hellenic Council which all 9 Organization preside under. While they all believe in this standard of hazing each organization has taken the time to also define it their own way, which you can find on their websites.

Just that I am a member of an NPHC organization... and that the NPHC as a whole does not condone the illegal practice of hazing. For all intents and purposes we are all (now) non-hazing organizations.
