Yuki Snow 888 I think the same thing as Kropterr, he is a piece of Deaths soul It was proven in the manga that, in fact, Kid does not have a mother. He was split from Death's soul. In the manga, once Kid reached his full powers, Death crumbled and left only his robe. Asura also claims to be Kid's brother in the manga, but there was no proof or anything else that they added to it.

Aaraa_Chan ZimbuTessen Fan Thought, read at own risk: There can only be one Shingami. By spliting his soul, Death creates Kid. As Kid grows in power, and becomes closer to being a full Shinigami[shown by the connecting sanzu lines] Death slowly grows weaker, untill he dies[shown by the cracking mask] so in a sense, Death and Kid are the same. But only one full "Death" can exist. Hm, I never thought of it that way Neither have I! That's clever. I like that idea.
