Kori had been found at a young age when she had died and sent to Rukongai District 50. It wasn't as severe as 80 was, nor was it as lawful as 1 was, but she survived in her own way. It had taken quite a while for her to be recognized by the Soul Society and sent to the Academy, but when she did, Kori always had problems with controlling her reiatsu. This caused her Hado work to be quite explosive, but her Bakudo work to be very effective.
Following her academy years, she graduated without an honors due to her inability to hone her Hado. But because of her Bakudo and lawful personality, she had been recruited in Squad 1 by (Insert Squad 1 Captain Commander Here in the Future) as his new fifth seat. It wasn't until after she had learned her Shikai did he appoint her his new Lieutenant. And after a dozen years working together, Kori had matured in her Hado ways and gained her bankai through strenuous training in her free time.
Having her new bankai, Kori had a lust for battles. It belied her natural sheepish nature but she loved besting people with her ultimate defense. That's when she challenged the current captain of Squad 11 to a position match, much like Zaraki, and won without using any of her Kido. She preferred to use her zanpakuto (claymore, to symbolize her intense reiatsu strength) rather than her bankai and when she used shikai, had an upper hand and won the match before she could use her bankai to its full extent. It was when she summoned it- to show off and to help her battle with the captain- did she strike a killing blow, gaining her the title as the Squad 11 Captain.
