Whether or not all the facts had been recorded in her memory properly was another issue altogether. Sure, Levi always tried her hardest to be sharp and academic but… alas, it was not her strong point. She retained literature like a pebble soaked up water; the ghoul was no sponge. Read, her lepus guide, crawled out from behind her monitor and pattered over to sit by Levi’s left hand to peer at what she was doing. Her enthusiasm on the subject matter made it easy for her to begin jotting down words and starting her tale…
The Botany Assignment Paper
The Finding of Candy Corn
Back before tatzelwurm folk grew candy corn, they lived in the shrubbery not knowing left from right. There were no homes and those folk were living in the trees just picking off the critters and plants that were within the forest. As the story goes, tatzelwurms were kinda looked down on by the other dragon kin at that time. Not much known about the why they did but they just did, my Gran said. So anywho there was one a the tatzel that didn’t want to stand for being looked down on and having to worry about the livelihood of his family. Name was Valcore and the plan was simple. With a mighty leap, he scoured outside the parameters of the forests till he was black and blue with sores, fur falling off and teeth threatening to fall out. The tatzel was brave to go so far out but now he was alone. There were no critters to hunt and no plants that would fill his belly.
Curling along the ground, ready to die, Valcore heard a cackling laughter. Tatzel was confronted by a golden dragon kin who swooped into his presences as smoothly as pudding. Said truly tatzelwurms were a clan to be recognized for their determination and he would grant the brave Valcore with a gift to bring back to the rest of the folk. Blowing a mighty breath of fire onto a tiny sprout few feet from the tatzel, Valcore watched the plant rise to the sky in one single straight vine. When the gold dragon stopped blowing, the vine started curling and came back down to the ground around Valcore. “Bring it back with you and you’ll all have no trouble with surviving the lands here.” The gold dragon kin told him how to tend to the plant and then Valcore passed out from exhaustion. Woke up back near the place were the other tatzels nested. Grans says it was likely the gold dragon also flew Valcore back home. That was sure nice of him I always thought. Working together and all that.
Anyway, so they took care of the plant which seemed to be really taking to the soils and watering they gave it according to the golden kin’s instructions. Tiny buds started to form and they were ALL eager to pick them but Valcore said “No no not yet! We should wait till they are at their peak!” This was something really important he was told too. Don’t go eating them if they aren’t fully grown yet ( You don’t want to eat unripe candy corn straight from the vine. That goop is pretty bad to eat). But that the tatzel would know when they were ready.
Sure enough the candy started hardening and it was in these colors that made Valcore gasp in shock. It was like flames. White, orange and yellow in rings all around the crop’s fruit with a pointed top like a rising flame. These tiny candy corns became a symbol for the unity of the tatzel in their hard work for successfully growing the plant and sharing it with one another. As time went on, my kin began to grow more and more and houses were being made and the fields of candy corn grew and grew. Almost anything could be made with this. When you had meat, the meat was made crispy on the outside while still being juicy rich on the inside when fired up. Breads and spookies got the flavoring they were needing and the folk rejoiced at the success of their hard work. So Gran said that our festivals are to celebrate coming together of our town by the growth of candy corn. When we burn the kernels, its an offering of thanks to the dragon kin that helped us out that time. Tatzelwurms are not to be taken lightly as dragon kin. Also if it weren’t for the candy corn, I might not be here today! Candy Corn and the growing of it is a very important part of being a tatzel today.

Lifting the filled out back-and-front sheet, Levi nodded with approval at her retelling of her Gran’s candy corn lore. This was going to be a grade A paper!
