When 2012 hit and nothing happened, no one was all that surprised. Sure, the cultists and religious nut jobs were a little upset but they soon enough found some other "rapture" to latch on to. Of course, when strange things started happening and people started disappearing. It was subtle at first, just a few fires here and there, electrical failures, things like that. Then the situation began to degenerate. On June 5th the government had announced that a plague had broken out across the world and that America was going under marshal law to protect the citizens.
This was a fallacy of course. In reality people had began to "awaken" as scientists put it. At random people all over the world were developing powers, some dangerous, others passive, and a select few were strange beyond belief. By 2013 there were over a million of what people had began referring to as the "Arcanists." The government continued denying their existence for another year until an Arcanist group hijacked the government news broadcast and told the world about their existence.
For a month things were quiet, it seemed like the world was just going to live with the Arcanists. The silence was broken by the creation of the Revanents, dead Arcanists brought back to life with cybernetics and to add insult to injury their free will was taken away.

The Arcanists
Elementals- Just like the name implies Elementals have the ability to control the elements. Although usually an elemental embodies only a single element it is not entirely uncommon to see an Elemental able to wield two elements. However, Dual Elementals, as they are called, exchange power for versatility.
Shifters: A blanket term used to describe anyone who can transform into an object, animal, another person, etc. Shifters are the most uncommon of the Arcanists for some reason though many scientists theorize Shifters are all around us and some may not even realize they are Shifters.
Beasts: The more unpleasant of the main kinds of Arcanists are the Beasts. Beasts are humans who have taken on animal qualities in varying degrees. Sightings of Lycanthropes and "vampires" are quite common though the claims are quite exaggerated. There are plenty of humanoid wolves and bats but nothing like the old myths. Humanoid wolves, bats, and any other Beast Arcanist merely possesses the abilities of the animal they have adopted into their DNA. For example, a humanoid bird could fly and see far distances, a humanoid wolf would gain advanced hunting instincts and tracking abilities, and so on.
Passives: There are many Arcanists who possess passive abilities that have no inherent way of hurting anyone. The most common are Arcanists who can commune with animals, grow plants, and even some who find themselves unable to age or become ill. This category is very broad and scientists confess they know very little about passives simply because they aren't obviously dangerous to society.
Freaks: Poor unfortunate people who were given abilities everyone agrees should not exist. There is no way to accurately predict what kind of power a freak might have but the most notorious were killed for a reason. For example, there was a man who had the ability to control corpses. After raiding several morgues he created an army of zombies that nearly wiped out New York. When he was assaulted by every Arcanist in a 100 mile radius he used the corpses to turn himself into a giant flesh monster. Freaks are usually killed on sight, and because of this they are very rare to see out in the world.
