Post the First: Introduction.Good Morning, Afternoon, or Evening. My name is Teqnologyque, and for two years now I have been authoring the "Lithium" system with the assistance of a few close personal friends, and some people who I have never seen face-to-face but deal with occasionally now due to the project. The goal of Lithium is to create a world that is both utterly fantastic and unreal, and at the same time steeped in scientific logic. Water can be built, the molecular makeup of a human can be dismantled and rebuilt elsewhere almost instantaneously, Bipedal walking tanks nearly three stories tall work in tandem with a human pilot to patrol the wastelands, and creatures of terrifying power prowl the cold and lonely nights. This is not all my work, however. I have also contacted a few well-known artists and writers in search of inspiration, among them are those who I will credit later. But that's for another post...

Post the second: General information.
In the early years of human existence, Man walked side by side with God. Man talked with God, lived with God and even feared God. They feared what omniscience could do if enraged. And so Man sought to distance himself from god, Man made machines to run their factories, to till their fields. Man created new weapons to strike at those who attacked them. They created massive cities to house and protect their people. Eventually Earth became to crowded, to overpopulated to sustain the race, and Man tried everything to stay alive. It wasn't until the year 3658 AD when man began constructing the first parts of the Dyson-Construct we call “The Core”. Man made machines to go outside the structure and build up and out, governed by “The Sanction”, a group of people elected to lead humanity. Hundreds of years later the Sanction lost control of the Builders, and the Core began expanding at a ludicrous rate to the size it is now, after that, the machines simply... shut down. They stopped working. The Core was finally completed as originally intended, but now it was far to massive, a man could walk for hundreds of years and never see another living creature. Man was finally alone, away from the prying eyes of God to do as he saw fit with his last few vestiges. The year is now 1934 Rebirth. One-thousand-nine-hundred-and-thirty-four years since Mankind established itself as a viable race in the core. Mega-Cities have risen from the fortresses that once housed only a few dozen people, humans have begun cultivating their land, and they have come to fear the creatures that now prowl the Core with them, for they are not as alone as they had wished. Horrible, mutated abominations now stalk the land, having had time to adapt to their new world they have become more deadly than ever, from the dreaded Silt-Wuyrm of the Dromind Deserts, to the Carnivorous Ypha-Fish that has adapted to life living in a sea of Ionized Liquid Plasma. The world you live in is harsh, unforgiving, and dangerous. But if you're smart, and have the fire-power for it, you just might survive. Legends speak of heroes who travelled the Core in search of the lost ark, Earth itself, buried somewhere in the foundations of the first structures, the oldest and most dangerous parts of the Core. But that's little more than a legend... Right? Do you really think you have what it takes to chase after something that might not even exist? Have you the skills and foolhardiness to even step outside the shielded walls of the mega-cities?
The Core is a massive Dyson sphere built to house more than one-hundred-billion humans (Estimated Diameter from "North" pole to "South" pole is 4.8 million kilometres). Despite that the current total human population of the Core is only 8.2 billion. Some small settlements in other sectors are completely unaware of the existence of the Mega-cities, and attribute strange glowing in the distance to their backwater superstition. Post the fifth: Biological information(Also known as; What I write best...) The Core is a massive and diverse world, brimming with new life wrought from the crucible of evolution. Some familiar creatures have mutated, becoming more adapted to a life in the core, making them faster, hardier, and stronger. Some creatures are entirely new, rebuilt from a genetic template after hundreds of thousands of years. Others, haven't changed at all. In the Core, appearances can be the most deadly weapon of all... Humans are by-and-large unchanged. Organic-Nanite infusion has lead humanity into pseudo-immortality and granting nano-reconstructive regeneration. Back-ups can be taken of information stored in the brain and loaded into another body at whim. Time in the Core, however, has made mankind a different beast from it's previous eras. Humans that live in the sheltered mega-cities are cautious, distrustful, and even paranoid of each other. Humans who live in the wastelands of the abandoned sectors are prideful, arrogant, and oddly honourable raiders, carving out their existence from the world and whatever stumbles into their territory. Planters, Humans that live in jungle sectors of the core are naive, persistent, and cunning hunters, using the terrain as a weapon more deadly than any other. Fishers, Humans that live on, in, or near the seas are prideful, honourable, and humble, taking what they are given with thanks for what they have. The Dracyyl (Pronounced: Dray-Seel) are a hive-mind race of highly evolved lizard-like creatures who evolved over countless milenia to become what they now are. Their society is largely caste based, with Workers at the lower rung, and Nobles at the top. In between are Architects, Soldiers, Instructors, and Tech-Priests (Scientists), with Soldiers being the highest any individual can hope to attain. Nobles are identified by a unique Psychic signature that sets them apart from the rest. Dracyyl use these psychic “Tags” to identify their next “Hive-Lord” or commanders. Despite this brutal and primitive method of setting themselves apart, the Dracyyl are a surprisingly sophisticated race of creatures, with their own Bio-Technology rivalling that of even the Sanction. They are largely centred in the York-Valley, sharing a tentative peace-treaty with EVO-Tech, though they exist everywhere on the Core. An average Dracyyl soldier stands at roughly seven feet three inches in height, and carries no weapons, instead relying on their bodies natural bio-plasma and natural magnetic field manipulation. This allows them to form weapons from their inherent energy. Dracyyl Plasma is a unique commodity, used by EVO-Tech in their standard infantry plasma carbine, it literally ignites on contact with breathable air. Dracyyl use this to great effect, orifices in their fore-arms can eject this plasma as either a stream, a blade, or bolts. Even more amazing is their natural flight capability through this plasma; “Wing” pods on their backs absorb air and combine with the bio-plasma, essentially; all Dracyyl soldiers are organic Scram-Jets. In order to continue generating plasma, however, a Dracyyl must metabolize Plasma Energy Charge Packs, typically used in modern energy weapons. Dracyyl can also bio-integrate armour into their own bodies, but this is a one-off process, requiring a surgical procedure to remove the integrated armour. The creatures feed primarily on salvaged energy weapons, using the energy to power themselves, and the minerals in the weapon construction to feed from. Using this plasma comes at the cost of the Dracyyl being unable to handle cold temperatures, a Soldier type can contract hypothermia at room temperatures. As such they are always attempting to keep warm by retaining as much bio-plasma as possible. Physically the average Dracyyl soldier is a bipedal creature that has two arms, similar to a human, with each hand having three fingers and a single thumb. Each finger is roughly four inches in length, with the thumbs being three and a half inches long. Digits are clawed but not often used in combat. Their legs have three joints, one at the hip, and two knees, although this new addition is not much longer than their thumbs. Their feet are large and stable, good for long-distance travel across harsh ground, and have two clawed toes. Their Bodies are covered in a natural ablative bio-composite similar to sea-shells, but much thicker, of a dark grey colour. The skin under this “Armour” is a dark bluish-purple that appears almost black. Tails are covered in a similar fashion with a large leaf-shaped bone protrusion at the end, this is used in combat, and is sharpened frequently. Heads have two ear-like fins that detect vibrations given off by sound-waves, these organs are also used to detect the minute vibrations given off by synapse firing. Thus a Dracyyl doesn't hear, so much as he or she “feels” what a given person is saying, although they are capable of conversing verbally. The head is roughly triangular in shape with a broad, short snout with four eyes (Two on each of the forward angles). Although Dracyyl don't have visible pupils, these small orbs work in tandem to produce a panoramic 180 degree view of their forward side. Combined with their natural ability to detect thoughts and you have a creature that is nigh-impossible to surprise. (Note: I needed an analogue for dragons... This came at me from my friend Richard) The Taltz are an intelligent race of desert dwelling bird-like humanoids. Their society appears to be going through a Dark-Age that prizes their religion and social standing above all else, and their technological level has receded into the renaissance level. They fight wearing Plate-mail and carry long-swords. They are, however, respected. As they are the only creatures that have had any modicum of success developing the deadlands known as the Dromind Desert, an entire sector of the Core devoted to little more than sand and rock. The desert itself sits on the largest veins of mineral and fuel resources on the Core, however, and the Taltz know that everyone wants what they have. And they guard it ferociously. Currently the Taltz are preparing for a preemptive strike on an EVO-Tech mine near their largest city. ((More may be added later, but for now these are the three intelligent biological races))

Post the sixth: Tech catalogCultivating the Core in the early days required machines that could survive the harsh elements in the internal systems. Those original Builders came to become members of the Sanction. A governing system founded in the years before the original mega structures were built. The Sanction Policing and Governing Agency, referred to simply as "The Safeguard", was put into place to assist in administration and policing of the Core. Other combat, service, civilian, and assassination androids, modern and old, have become self-aware. Sometimes these mechanical beings are more human than most people you will meet on the Core. Military Combat Androids are typically larger, heavier, and have much more armouring, but fall short of other classes because they are limited only to integrated weaponry and armour. Military units tend to have very little in the way of actual free-will and independence, relying on the orders of others. They are made to do as much damage as possible in the shortest amount of time. Civilian Security units are stripped down versions of military combat units but are typically faster and have a greater degree of independence. They have much less armour but have the ability to wear clothing-based armour, and carry hand-held weapons. They are also capable of being modified differently using universal sockets and plug-sets. Civilian Security units are capable of wearing powered armour. Service units are the massive machines made to help unload large cargo from ships, or mine in dangerous environments, and as such are quite capable strategists with surprisingly quick reflexes. Due to their construction they are heavy, slow, and limited to integrated improvised melee weapons, such as pneumatic claws designed to cut down trees, or pile-drives built to crush rock. Due to their construction, Service units are restricted to attached external armour, and cannot wear regular armour. Assassination units are fast and capable fighters, but frail of frame and easily destroyed. Standing at the average height of a human these units have the greatest degree of total free-will. This leads to a few inherent problems in a mechanical body and many Assassination androids become mentally unstable. They are capable of using hand-held weapons and can wear regular armour. They cannot, however, wear Heavy or Powered Armour. Synthetic Humans were built by the Sanction to bridge the gap between Human intuition and mechanical resilience. Built entirely from synthetic materials a Synthetic Human is nigh indestructible. A Synthetic Human's body composition is different from a normal Human. Their bones are made of a virtually unbreakable diamond laced ceramic composite, their skin is a dense ballistic fibrous armour, and their grafted exo-skeletons are made of the same material as their bones. Most Synthetic Humans are Safeguard police agents, referred to as Ravens, their insignia is that of a scarlet raven in flight with it's talons brought forward. This insignia is usually placed on the left shoulder of the unit and etched into their armour. Their grafted exo-skeletons can change shape and form with a though and has built-in Omni-Jack plugs that can fit any socket, allowing them to “Speak” with the Core and even control Vertical Tanks with little more than a thought. Synthetic Humans are issued a single weapon at time of creation, a powerful gravitic energy pistol that is keyed to that individual unit. No other android or creature can even pick up and use the weapon once keyed, even after the unit has been destroyed. Although some raiders carry them as trophies, Ravens are quickly dispatched to deal with the brigands and return the stolen property. The eyes of a Synthetic Human are what make them easy to identify, they are often bright colours (Such as Gold, Red, Cyan, etc.), and have segmented irises that change subtly when they focus their eye-sight on something. They also have a powerful zoom function, allowing them to use their pistols with a snipers precision.

If you are going for a more logical "realistic" alien setting then surely these are impractical and unlikely when compared to the alternatives? I know Battletech, Cthulutech, and the 40K setting have them, but surely that's an aesthetic decision rather than one based on versimilitude?

If you are going for a more logical "realistic" alien setting then surely these are impractical and unlikely when compared to the alternatives? I know Battletech, Cthulutech, and the 40K setting have them, but surely that's an aesthetic decision rather than one based on versimilitude? Simple reason: I have a fetish for giant robots. The actual reason: Military weapons evolve all the time, look at modern tanks. We used to fight wars all the time without 'em, but then one guy wanted the upper-hand so he built the first tanks, another guy said "Hey! He did that! We can too, but better!" and built an even better tank. This is the next literal extreme of military evolution. As one side began to introduce power-armour to the battle field, another wanted bigger, more powerful suits of power-armour. When that started the first side began creating larger more powerful IFV's and tanks, so the second side began fitting their power-armour with Tank-busting weapons (At this point war was "If I see you first, I can kill you first".). After that the first side had enough and began blending tanks with power-armour to create the first VT's (Allowing near-human mobility in a larger, more heavily armoured frame). And it just keeps going like that, even in modern society. Now that that's done with, let's discuss those alternatives you mentioned. Tracked vehicles: Have difficulty navigating harsh terrain. Although granted I saw a Panther plow through six feet of snow once, it had special attachments. A bipedal, or even quadrupedal vehicle would have no trouble crossing through deep snow. Mud could pose a problem to a legged vehicle but entire tanks (As in the whole ******** tank) have been abandoned in deep mud. Same with other tracked vehicles. Soft sand lessens traction and therefore a tracked vehicle cannot climb a high-dune in a desert (the Israel army found that out the hard way...), whereas a legged vehicle would have less trouble climbing a steep dune. In Zero-Gravity (And there is a bit of that in Lithium) a legged vehicle can be fitted with multi-directional thrusters on it's body and appendages, allowing it more freedom of movement. Tracked vehicles... not so much. Flying craft: have a different place in the Lithium game world. Not so much as "Gunships" for "Dog-Fighting", but rather as large transport craft, and space craft. I don't actually have much experience with flight. To me flight meant "There's the Helicopter, let's get in and get carted to our next assignment" so if you could help me figure this one out I'd greatly appreciate it. Also; Patience is a virtue, if you had waited you would be able to identify several reasons for producing such strange military equipment. It's just that I've been a little pre-occupied with job-search, as well as coping with a flu that randomly dropped on me one afternoon. So I haven't really had the time to fill everything out a little more yet.

This is the only reason that matters to me. And for my money its the only good reason to have mechs. I'm not convinced by your arguments about other vehicles though. Sure tracked vehicles cant go everywhere. But neither can gigantic walkers. Tanks have the advantage of a reduced silhouette (harder to target), and can layer up with armour without weak points like knees smile Have you heard of Ground Effect Vehicles? Skimmers, jetcars and hovercraft fly slightly above the ground given good all terrain performance with many of the advantages of tanks.
