Avery's maroon eyes swiveled, casting his attention from one side of the clinic to the other as he and his wife came through the entrance. One tanned hand clutched Mae's, a level of affection he usually didn't display when in public. The young man wouldn't admit it, but he was nervous, and it seemed to only get worse as they moved further into the room. So much of the area surrounding them was white. His brother had warned him that would be the case, but he hadn't expected it to be such a true, bleached white. It gave off an air of a permeating cleanliness. His nose wrinkled slightly at the unnatural color. People from his home world might have weird hair color, or maroon or red eyes, but nothing else was ever this white.

A 'fertility clinic'. The phrase didn't sound like something Avery thought they could trust, but Mae had reassured them that the clinic had a high success rate. She wanted children of her own so badly, and after seeing her with the orphans in her home world he didn't have the heart to discourage her. So here they were. He cast a glance toward his wife to read her emotions.

A faint smile tugged at the young woman's lips, her hand gently squeezing the one wrapped around it. Unlike her spouse, she was excited, no trace of nervousness marring her good mood. She was going to have a baby. No, not a baby, babies. Twins. If she didn't exercise discipline in her behaviors, she would have been jumping up and down for joy. As it was, she had an image to maintain: calm and collected. So, the only sign of her joy was the smile spreading across her face, slowly inching its way into a grin.

In all honesty, Maeryn wished she could have a pregnancy the normal, natural way. But, she knew what the odds were; the fertility rates of her people weren't the highest. And "not the highest" meant nearly, but not quite, non-existent. So, naturally, when she'd found out about the clinic, she made the decision. Black eyes rose up to look at Avery, the smile directed at him.

Nell Floppi, head pediatrician and secondary geneticist, came out of her exam room followed by another couple. The woman was vastly pregnant, and after a few smiling words, she and her husband left the clinic grinning ear to ear.

Nell walked over to the desk, pushing one short rabbit ear back over her shoulder with her long hair, and leaned over to talk to the receptionist. "I need a minute to tidy up the ultrasound machine and then you can send the next person in."

She turned away from the desk, passing a momentary smile over to the new couple standing near the door, and then she disappeared into the second examination room.

Waiting. He hated waiting. Avery's brother had warned him that he might have to wait a bit, if the clinic functioned anything like a normal doctor's office. It seemed to Ave that it took hours for the doctor to come out, accompanied by a couple who was expecting. Well, at least it seemed their process worked. This didn't stop the male from keeping his grip on his wife's hand. Mae was so excited and, truthfully, Avery was hopeful that this weird treatment would work - he just hated not knowing what to expect. He managed a small smile in return to his wife's - silently sharing in a portion of her joy.

When the receptionist finally said that they could join the doctor in the examination room, he bit back the urge to dart down the hallway. Instead, he forced himself to at least appear calm as walked to the room with his lavender-haired partner. Maroon eyes immediately fell on the doctor. He could trust her, right? His brother had insisted that doctors were like healers, but he wasn't sure he trusted this idea of modern medicine.

A small bubble of nervousness formed itself in Maeryn, slowly growing with each step. To be honest, she had as little experience with the doctors of this world as her husband. And, while she did have faith in them, the fear of the unknown nagged at her. Still, she kept the smile on her face, refusing to let her composure falter, even for a moment. Her hand gently applied pressure to his, whether this was to reassure him or comfort herself was anyone's guess. The bubble that had been welling up, while it refused to dissipate, did shrink down, the weight it bore on the 'young' woman lightening.

As they reached the door, Maeryn's smile was directed at the doctor. "Good day, ma'am." she greeted, her voice light and formal. One must always remember their manners, yes? Of course.
