gaia_angelleft Late 1996 - Somewhere in NE Asia gaia_angelright

Brightness was the first thing she remembered. Overwhelming intense brightness. Like being in a deep sleep in a pitch black room only to have a million iridescent lights turned on. She shrank from it like it was burning her soul.

After awhile her eyes adjusted a bit. She realized she was in a cave, the light that had seamed so bright before came from the entrance and she realized it was in fact fairly dim. Looking around she saw that giant shards of ice that had entombed her. Her com device was dead, there would be no calling for help.

How long had she been asleep? Was it sleep? Maybe it was a coma...she wasn't sure. It would be hard to tell before nightfall. Where was her staff? She didn't see it anywhere. She could create another, but not in this weakened state.

"Uggggg" She groaned as she realized how hungry she was. She was physically weak with hunger. "Icy?" She called out to her guardian but was not answered.

"Crap" Shiva exclaimed in her home toung. Staggering to her feat she worked her way out of the cave, the brightness of the noon day blinding her again.

"Icy? Bahamut? Rick?" She called but got no answer. She let her eyes adjust. "This is odd" She thought aloud. The mountains above were the same, the cave was the same, but the valley bellow was not. The trees were different, the town was gone and the rivers flow had changed.

The senshi base she knew laid beyond the river. Slowly Shiva made her way down the mountain to the river. Along the way she stopped frequently to pick berries. Her hunger was vicious and unending, the more she snacked the hungrier she got. Finally she reached the river and collapsed on it's shore.
She knew better then to hydrate too quickly, so she crawled over and slowly sipped the water. Her thirst partially quenched, she rolled away from the river and let herself drift to sleep under the warm sun.

When she awoke again it was dark and cool. She returned to the stream and quenched her thirst. Finally satisfied she sat up and gazed at the stars. Like any child of her tribe, she had been taught how to count time by the stars. She wasn't very good at it, but she knew a great stretch of time had passed. She frowned as she pondered this.

Looking down at her fuku she realized how dire of shape it was in. The ice of her prison had protected it somewhat, but it was frail, and bits broke away at her touch. She ignored it for the moment, he next step needed to be food and shelter.

Standing up she faced the river. Stretching out her hand she channeled the magic that would freeze it over. Walking across she peered down through the clear ice hoping to see signs of fish, but it was too dark. She continued over her ice bridge and across the valley to where there was once a town.

Her strength returning, she started to regain her sense of the pull, an ability all ancient senshi shared. They could feel each other, find each other. They were always connected. She frowned again realizing it did not come from the village ahead, but from the far east.

She considered changing course, but she knew she needed to find food first. As she drew closer to town however, she grew concerned. There was no signs of fires, there wasn't the usual singing drifting through the woods.

Reaching it's outskirts, she dropped to her knees. The town she knew was gone. Nothing but dirt and grass and trees. Grasping the dirt she screamed into the night and finally allowed herself to cry. Collapsing on the ground, she again drifted into sleep.

Shiva's eyes fluttered open again at first light. Not because of the light, but because of a rough wet toung on her forehead. "Stop that icy..ICY?" Shiva stared up at empty space.

She sat up and looked around, but saw nothing. She stared at the river. Fish was plentiful this time of year, but she was no fisher. She frowned, her stomach rumbling.

She sat there for awhile, quiet in thought.

"So how long do you think it's been?" Rick's voice broke the silence.

Shiva jerked her head up, but saw no one. Her eyes watered with the realization her precious rick wasn't there. The Sun was high in the sky. Suddenly lonely, needing to hear a voice, she pretended he stood there with her. "Long enough that I can't tell. Long enough that the river has drifted and the sky is foreign to me. I wonder what happened here..."

She pondered the scattered ruins in front of her. Abandoned and over run with with brush and trees. "They may have just moved, found better hunting grounds down stream. " Vishnu's voice came to mind. "The worlds still here, so something must have happened."

"But what about Mayam?" Shiva spat out the name aloud like foul water.

"Well the worlds still here and there is a town down river, so something must have happened." 'Rick' Commented.

Shiva pondered it a moment and stood up. "I should probably changed this outfit." She pulled at the holey fuku, which disolved revealing her formal regalia. Rubbing her temples. "I forgot I was addressing the council when he attacked. I was hoping for work clothes."

"I'm not doing that hike in this skirt. I hated this dress anyways." Shiva pulled the ornate feathered dress over her head revealing her white underpants. She rolled it up and shoved it under her arm.

Havens were first established by the first, second and third incarnations of senshi. At first their purpose was to provide a safe place for the freakish looking senshi. Later they would be used as training centers, gathering places and political centers.

Each was unique, an expression of it's host, but most shared some basic features; A defensible position, and expandable layout and plenty of secrets.

The Northbrook Haven was no exception.

Shiva clenched her fists in anger as she stood in what was once the grand hall. All the tapestries paintings and furniture were gone. The compound was mostly intact, still wedged up against the mountain, but nothing but bare walls remained. It was obvious the place was long ago stripped of it's interior.

Slowly she made her way downstairs, and was surprised to see the way to the central offices closed off. Where once a door stood, nothing but a stone wall remained. Confused, she touched it and was surprised to see the stone melt away, revealing the door. Removing her hand, the stone reappeared.

"Should you really go in?" Rick frowned at the illusion.

Shiva glared at the apparition "Funny, a delusion worried about a simple illusion."

Shiva touched the wall again and the stone melted away. The door was Jammed, but gave way to a good shove. Inside, she was astonished to see the offices relatively untouched. With no windows or open doors, the underground offices faired fairly well. Turning a corner however she brought her hand to her face in shock. All along the corridor blast marks blacked the walls, floors and ceilings. At the end, was a perfect outline of a splayed woman. Staring at it. "He got in here didn't he?" thought out loud.

"Apparently so"

Shiva made her way to her own office. Walking down the hall way, it was obvious there had been scuffles here too, although no blast marks adorned the walls.

Shiva surveyed the damage of her rooms with sadness. The two friends went to work looking for clues and gathering usefull objects. In the remains of what was once a dresser she found her coin purse, now in tatters. She pocketed the coins and tossed the holey purse. A piece of flint, a set of needles, and empty spool, a leather sack, some bits of jewelery.

"Well these are all useless" Motioned to a dresser full of brittle and age tattered clothes.

She examined her pile of reclaimed treasures "Where is my illusion broach?"

Shiva pondered it "I left it in Sayam." Shiva as she examined her own blue tinted hands. "We'll have to do it the old fashioned way." Shiva opened a drawer and frowned to find her old hand made cosmetics dried and useless. "I should have paid more attention to how Brahma made it."

Sighing Shiva shoved their little pile into the makeshift bag she had created. "Well I guess it's time to go"

It had not been long since the worlds sky had blackened and cleared. It was the first time Manchus mother had let him out of her sight since the world-wide incident. He wandered along the river and up to his favorite play spot, an old fort wedged in the mountain, but was startled by the sound of foot steps behind him. Quickly the boy ducked for cover.

From behind a bush he watched a giant of a woman hobble toward the old fort. It was clear she wasn't well. He considered offering to help her, but her size and colorings were intimidating. "She must be a goddess...or a monster?" He thought. He trailed her for awhile when suddenly a strange winged cat came out of no where, dead rabbit in hand. He watched as they prepared and ate it and debated approaching her. "Maybe if I bring her more rabbits?" He watched as they chatted and followed the trail up to the fort. For a moment he thought he'd been caught when the cat stopped mid air and looked around, sniffing.

Manchu ran back to the village and snatched a rabbit off his fathers line. "If it's a goddess, she'll bless us and father will be pleased!" Manchu silently rationalized the theft to himself as he ran back to the fort.

Shiva stared blankly at the small shaking little boy holding out a rabbit to her.

"Is this for me little one?"

"Yes ma'am, goddess ma'am" The boy was shaking like a leaf. "I hope it is an acceptable offering. "

Shiva looked at the rabbit hungrilly. "What makes you think I'm a Goddess child?"

"Because you're a giant and..well blue.." The boy continued to shake.

"Boy, you shake, do not be afraid of me. I'll not hurt you. You have no idea how much I appreciate this gift." Manchu relaxed a bit.

"I was hoping you might extend your blessing on my family. I can bring more rabbits if you want." He added as Shiva took the rabbit and started to skin it.

Shiva pondered the boy as she worked. "I'm afraid I'm no goddess child. I can extend no blessings" Shiva knealled to be a little closer to his level. "I do however need some help. I can pay for it."

"What kind of help?" Manchu asked warily.

"For a start, information. Whats the world like now?"

Manchu raised an eyebrow confused.

"I've been..away...let me cook this rabbit and you can tell me about recent events" Shiva set about setting a fire.

As the they sat and shared the freshly cooked rabbit as Manchu explained how the sky had gone black for months and suddenly cleared up. He explained the year was 1996 AD. He explained what AD was, although he had no idea how to compare it to the years Shiva knew. He talked about mysterious warrior women to the east on the island of Japan fighting other warriors.

Shiva questioned him at length about these warrior women. She recognized the names of many of the women. Sailor Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Pluto, Uranus and Neptune where all fallen comrades. Apparently however they were being led by a Sailor Moon against a Sailor Galaxia, scouts Shiva knew nothing about.

The next day the odd duo met again in the ruins. Having spent the night at the temple, Shiva had had a chance to rig a proper traveling bag and was set for travel.

Manchu meanwhile had taken some of her gold coins and discreetly exchanged them for local currency at the market. He spent the morning rummaging through the local market, picking up the things that the strange woman had requested as well as some things he knew she would need. Food, travelling cloths, a black cloak, matches, a map, and other odds and cash.

Shiva rummaged through the bag he brought. "Such strange materials" she pulled out the mens jeans. "But these should do. "

"You should probably avoid towns..." Manchu ventured.

Shiva raised an eyebrow at him.

"You can hide your skin.. but you're so tall..." Manshu explained.

"No taller then.." Shiva stopped. "Are there not others as tall as I anymore?"

Manshu shook his head.

"Not even the warriors of the east?"

"No ma'am" Manshu squirmed, not wanting to anger the giant woman.

"That does pose a problem..." Shiva pondered. Subconsciously her gaze was drawn west, to her homeland.

"But dadddddd, it's true" That night Manchu pleaded with his father. His stories of a giant blue woman didn't go over well with the farmer. He had found the stash of cash and gold Shiva had sent Manchu into town with, and accused the boy of stealing from the merchants. He also wasn't happy about the missing rabbit.

Manchu surprised his father, ripping the cash out of his hands and running out of the shack into the night. His mothers wail could be heard by the rest of the village.

Shiva woke up to a familiar voice. She silently cursed. "I can't still be hallucinating..." Sitting up, she focused on the source. It wan Manchu.

"Miss, please wake up"

"Manchu... what are you doing here so early?" Shiva eyed the boy. He didn't carry any of the things that they'd agreed he would bring that night.

"I ran away." Manchu was on the brink of tears.

"Oh dear child, what happened?"
