Alfred the Bartender

PostPosted: Fri Dec 17, 2010 5:12 pm

Well, perhaps we should move along. I'll shift it to morning... the time will be two hours before dawn. That'll give you all the night to finish your conversations, sleep, eat, etc... and keep this from, you know, not dying. Since nobody wants to post.

(Other answers go up here)
Alfred nodded to the others. "Well... if that's all... I'm getting some sleep. We'll move out again a couple hours before dawn, while it's still cool. We should make it to the Agashi stronghold by nightfall if we do so." He smiled around his unlit pipe. "They're not quite in the center of the desert... nothing is. Nobody knows for sure what's there. Anyway, goodnight."

----------------------------

It was still dark when he awoke. It was a trick he'd learned a long time ago - how to set a mental alarm clock. He was confident that it was an hour or two before dawn... the position of the stars and the moon above him helped confirm that.

He moved through the sleeping bodies, gently shaking each person awake and praying they wouldn't misunderstand and gut him. He chuckled at the thought.

With that done, he sat on a rock and waited for them to stir properly.

Era watched him calmly with her eyes on his face. She seemed somewhat thoughtful with her fingers running over her lips. It was a habit she sometimes slipped into. "Powerful but cannot use it," she said thoughtfully as she rubbed her bottom lip. She pulled her hand away and looked at him with curiosity still in her eyes. "That would be a waste but... it causes you pain? Hmph, I'm sorry... I shouldn't have asked."

Great! That was a knife in her plan. It could only be for when he uses it but the taste of power was something almost no one could overcome. Something as powerful as that could be something that he would want to grab hold of. Casting a spell takes lots of energy and to jump in the flow could overwhelm his obviously sensitive senses. It was such a good plan too! It would help remove her own weaknesses and help him use his strengths instead of being held back by his weaknesses... whatever.

Sighing, she thanked Va'al for the bread and tore off little pieces to eat it. It was surprisingly good despite being in a hot, dry climate. But, she noticed Alfred's words about waking early. She decided then that it was time to get some sleep. It would ne rough trying to get up, anyway.

---

Era stirred awake when a hand touched her. She could have attacked him because of that but a split second probably stopped that. Instead, she took in the scents around her. nothing had changed. No, she didn't have super sense or anything. There was someone else who did and he was always nearby. She could sense him but only because of their link that lay on her arm. It was hidden now but he was still familiar to her.

"Don't do that," Era grumbled. "I don't need to be sewing your stomach shut to keep all your guts from falling out." Sitting up, she shook the tie out of her hair and allowed the long black waves to fall down her back. It was cool out so fixing her hair wasn't as bad as if she tried to do it in the blazing heat of the sun.

Zan smirked as he watched Alfred move through the sleeping forms. He
had been up for some time now, watching the stars; since the Bloody
Harvest, Zan had rarely slept through the night.

He thought more on the strange words of the dragon summoner, Era. She
seemed to have a large amount of interest in his magical reserves, more
interest than he had ever taken. He dimly remembered nights when he was
very young, nights spent sobbing into his pillow because the magic hurt so
much. The magic itself burned inside him, and had done so until Zan was
nearly fifteen when the pain had gradually ebbed to nothing. He barely even
remembered that it was there.

He chuckled. She had seemed sorry for asking, though not sorry for him;
she seemed to be sorry that his magic was inaccessible. He idly
wondered just what her plans for it could be.

The stars above him were fading gently as false dawn crept up; the edges
of the sky were grey and colour was shy to re-enter the world. The dark
was cold - Zan knew deserts were frigid at night - but the selfsame
problem that prohibited him from using magic kept him almost eternally
warm.

The desert during the day would be unbearable.

He stood and stretched. The rock he had sat upon for the past hour or two
was comfortable, but he wasn't getting anywhere. He began to push
himself through a kata, his hands and feet sliding through the motions.
This particular kata was designed to wake up the body, pushing it into
motion in preparation for a day's work. His hands moved in simulated
blocks as his weight rocked from foot to foot; feet twisted and launched
into the kicks his muscles knew so well.

It felt good to be moving again. The peace brought on him by sinking into
muscle-memory was always welcome.

Finished, he moved onto a faster set of movements. He knew there would
be fighting today; he could feel it in his bones. It was best to be prepared.

Mos'bur, shoving one last piece of jerky into his mouth, let out a sigh through his nose. Alfred was right. Morning would come soon, and the new day would bring it's own set of problems. Best to just sleep now. He smiled to himself. Old habits die hard, and he liked to sleep in his animal form. He spent all of the day preparing for his sleep, and carried the food reserves to munch in the morning to get himself back to human should he need it. He quietly slipped into the darkness, removing his clothes. He tossed the material and items to his desired resting place. He focused on the animal within him, his familiar form it was second nature for him to be a bear. He could feel his bones becoming longer and thicker. The extra mass meant more bone structure, and from his current skeleton the necessary parts grew. There wasn't much different about a bear an a human skeleton, aside from the skull, hands and feet, and of course the size. His weight, muscle, and fat content increased proportionately as his size grew. His face became elongated, his nose bone and jaw bone becoming a snout. His already hairy form grew thick, shaggy fur. He stepped from behind, the tree, walking on all fours, and he lay down by his stuff. The transformation had only taken a minute and a half. He shut his eyes, and went to sleep.

---

Mos'bur, was asleep, and did not like to be woken up before he was ready. He growled as he was touched by Alfred. He opened one eye, and say that it was early; time to rise any ways. He groaned and stood up from his sleeping position. He stared at his pile of stuff and decided not to turn back human at this point. He sat down on his butt and looked around at the slowly rising individuals. He didn't like to wake up, but he could, and after only two minutes, he was awake and ready. He would just need to swing his clothes over his back and he would be ready to walk. He would probably stay like this until the sun came up. He walked over to the pool of water and began to drink. This form could take in a lot more water, and it did transfer over to his human form. After a long three minute drink, he stepped a way and lumbered back over to his spot, looking around at the others, waiting for the signal to go. He was a big bear, nearly a thousand pounds of muscle, bone, fur and fat. He is a formidable creature, and he does generally get the respect alloted to bears normally when in this form.

(Apologies. I've been very busy.)

Va'al heard movement and pulled himself out of sleep. He'd been surprised to note that he'd simply dozed off last night without pause. He'd heard some of them conversing and then...his mind simply stopped registering. There was simply the darkness of sleep.

He stood feeling sleep fall off of his form and the familiar tensions returning to his muscles. He was rarely fully relaxed in new environments like this. He spent a short time brushing the sand from his form and tail as best he could, before turning to join the group from his resting place.

Coming out from the somewhat enclosed hiding place he'd found, the chill air nipped at him lightly, hardly even an annoyance. Wae'irkin were warm by nature but that didn't mean they weren't unfamiliar with sudden chills. A shiver ran down his spine ending at the tip of his now somewhat more bushy tail before it settled into nothing.

Slinking up aside Mos'bur, he stooped to refill his supply of water and to satisfy his own thirst. As the cool water passed down his throat he could feel his body returning to full awakeness. Eating more of his strange bread quickly and finishing with more water, he stood aside, ready for the continuation of their travels.
