I totally just dug up this memory when I was trying to remember when I learned how to draw.
It was the first day of preschool, and my mom wanted to talk to the teacher for a bit, so the teacher gave me two options... she asked me if I wanted to play with beads, or if I wanted to "write". I was a little kid, so of course I chose the beads, even though I thought that sounded pretty boring too, but not as bad as writing. Then, a few minutes later, this other kid came in and she gave him the same choice, and again she used the word "write"... except this time she worded it in a way that implied he would be allowed to draw, and that she was, in fact, not talking about writing at all. Then she gave him some crayons and a line-free piece of paper! This pissed me off. A lot. (You know, since I was a little kid, and that was about as bad as things got back then, and also since drawing was my favorite thing to do.)
SAY WHAT YOU MEAN, GOD DAMMIT. Especially if you're a teacher! You're the one who's supposed to be teaching us the value of language!
........... Do you remember the first moment you realized exactly how important grammar/language/spelling/punctuation/etc was? (is?;; )

When did I become one... I think it was around when I was 10, and people couldn't spell things like "before", and I could. I STILL know a girl, now, in 9th grade, who can't spell "write". She spells it "wright".

I've always preferred to read well written work, but grammar became more important to me freshman year.

It's been almost a year since that post was made my friend. I have matured greatly and as you may recognize my grammar is not as horrible as one would speculate.
